Mastering the Flip: How to Fix an Inverted or Mirrored Camera

Find the right fix for a mirrored, upside-down, or sideways camera by testing preview versus outgoing video, then follow platform-specific steps for Zoom, Teams, Meet, Webex, OBS, Windows, and phones.

An “inverted camera” can mean three different things: text is mirrored left-to-right, the picture is upside down, or the image is rotated sideways. Hold up a page with readable writing, then check whether the problem affects only your preview or also the video other people receive. That diagnosis determines the right fix.

Identify the camera problem first

What you see What it means Typical correction
Writing is backward and left/right feels reversed Horizontal mirror Disable Mirror, or use Flip Horizontal
The entire image is upside down Vertical inversion or 180-degree rotation Correct the camera orientation, driver, or use Flip Vertically
The picture is on its side 90-degree rotation Rotate the source; do not use a horizontal flip
Only your self-view is reversed Preview mirroring Change the meeting app’s self-view setting
Everyone sees reversed writing Output-level mirroring Correct the camera utility, OBS source, or virtual camera

“Switch camera” is different from flipping an image. In Google Meet, for example, Switch camera changes between the phone’s front and rear lenses rather than correcting orientation: Google Meet camera controls.

Run a 30-second diagnosis

  1. Hold printed text or a sign in front of the lens.
  2. Check whether the letters are backward, the image is upside down, or the frame is sideways.
  3. Open the operating system’s camera preview and compare it with the affected app.
  4. Ask another participant what they see, or record a short test.
  5. Note whether the fault appears in every app, only one app, only your preview, or only the outgoing feed.

This prevents you from disabling a harmless mirror preview while leaving an actually inverted outgoing signal unchanged.

Fix the setting in your video-call app

Zoom (desktop)

  1. Open Zoom and select your profile or account menu.
  2. Choose Settings, then Video (the section may be grouped with video effects in some builds).
  3. Clear Mirror my video preview.
  4. Check the result with printed text.

Zoom documents this control as a horizontal flip of your preview: Zoom video settings. The word “preview” matters: verify the audience view with another participant or a recording instead of assuming the outgoing video changed. Mobile and desktop menus, and minimum-version requirements, can differ. If the option is missing, check that you are not using a virtual camera or a manufacturer utility that controls the image first.

  • The adjustable universal clip lets you attach the camera securely to your screen or laptop, or fold the clip and set the webcam on a shelf. You’re always ready for your next video call.

Microsoft Teams

  1. Outside a meeting, open Settings > Devices. During a call, open More > Video effects and settings.
  2. Select the camera in use.
  3. Turn off Mirror my video.

Microsoft says this setting changes your own view; it does not necessarily alter what other participants receive. Together mode may not support the control. Labels and availability vary among Teams Free, work or school accounts, desktop, web, and mobile versions. See Teams device settings and Teams meeting video controls.

Google Meet

On mobile, use Switch camera only when you need the front or rear lens. It is not a mirror correction. Meet’s camera features differ between web, iPhone, iPad, and Android, so look for an orientation or mirror control in the current app interface rather than assuming a universal path: Google Meet camera help.

Webex

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Video.
  3. Turn off Mirror my video view.

Cisco documents this option for desktop and mobile, with presentation varying by platform: Webex mirror-view settings. Confirm the outgoing image separately if readable text matters.

Correct an upside-down or mirrored source in OBS Studio

Add the camera

  1. Create or select a scene.
  2. In Sources, select + and choose Video Capture Device.
  3. Select the webcam or capture card, then confirm the preview.

OBS describes the source’s device, resolution, frame-rate, buffering, and related properties in its Video Capture Device documentation and webcam setup guide.

Fix vertical inversion

  1. Select the camera source.
  2. Open its properties.
  3. Use Flip Vertically when the device sends an upside-down image.
  4. Apply the change and retest with text.

OBS specifically associates this option with an upside-down input; it is not the same as mirroring.

Fix a horizontal mirror

  1. Select the source in the preview or Sources list.
  2. Right-click and choose Transform > Flip Horizontal.
  3. Use Transform > Reset Transform if the orientation becomes wrong.

The horizontal transformation path is documented by OBS community contributors: OBS source transformation guidance. If the menu is unavailable, make sure the source is selected and unlocked.

Send the corrected scene to another app

  1. In OBS, select Start Virtual Camera in the Controls dock.
  2. In Zoom, Teams, Meet, or another webcam-compatible app, choose OBS Virtual Camera.
  3. Check that the receiving app is not applying a second mirror effect.

OBS explains this workflow in its Virtual Camera guide. A second flip can undo the first one, so test the final feed rather than relying on the OBS preview alone.

Check the camera, driver, and operating system

Open the Windows Camera app or the camera manufacturer’s utility. If the image is wrong there as well, the cause is more likely physical mounting, driver software, firmware, or camera orientation data than a meeting-app preview. Windows documents rotation-related camera settings for supported devices, but it does not provide a guaranteed universal horizontal-mirror switch: Windows camera settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Confirm the physically mounted camera is upright.
  • Check the manufacturer utility for rotation or mirror controls.
  • Install an appropriate driver or firmware update if every application is upside down.
  • Close other camera applications before retesting.
  • Make sure the app is using the intended USB webcam rather than a built-in or virtual camera.

Phone cameras and phones used as webcams

Phone behavior is split among the camera app, the call app, and any phone-as-webcam utility. On Google Pixel, Camera > down arrow > Settings > Save selfie as previewed controls whether saved selfies are mirrored; it is not a universal video-call setting: Pixel Camera selfie settings.

If a phone supplies the computer’s camera, select the resulting virtual camera in the meeting app and make the orientation correction in the layer that actually owns the image. OBS lists Camo, Continuity Camera, DroidCam, EpocCam, NDI HX Camera, and VDO.Ninja as different phone-camera approaches; their operating-system support, USB or Wi-Fi connections, effects, and features vary: OBS smartphone-camera guide. USB usually reduces network-related variables, while Wi-Fi solutions add convenience but another connection point.

When the normal control is missing or ineffective

  1. Check the selected camera; changing the built-in webcam while the call uses OBS Virtual Camera will have no effect.
  2. Close camera utilities, browsers, and other calls that may be applying a transformation.
  3. Test the same camera in a second application.
  4. Reset OBS transforms and remove any duplicate virtual-camera layer.
  5. Review camera permissions and restart the camera application.
  6. If the image is upside down everywhere, inspect the driver, manufacturer utility, firmware, and physical mounting.
  7. Verify the result with a second device or participant.

Confirm what viewers actually see

  • Show a page with readable writing.
  • Ask another participant whether the words are readable and left/right is normal.
  • Record a short clip and inspect the saved output.
  • Compare the local preview with the outgoing view, especially when Teams or another app documents preview-only mirroring.
  • Repeat the test after enabling or disabling OBS Virtual Camera so you know which layer changed the image.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my camera mirrored but not broken?

Many apps mirror self-view so it feels like looking in a mirror. That does not mean the physical camera is defective; use printed text and a second viewer to check the outgoing feed.

Does turning off Mirror always change what other people see?

No. Microsoft says Teams’ Mirror my video control changes your own view. Other apps and virtual-camera workflows can handle preview and output separately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why is my camera upside down in one app but normal in another?

The inversion is probably being applied by that app, a camera utility, OBS, or a virtual-camera layer rather than by the hardware itself.

Can I fix orientation without OBS?

Yes. Use the meeting app’s mirror control for preview-only problems, or the camera manufacturer’s utility when it provides source-level rotation. OBS is a fallback when those controls are unavailable or you need the corrected feed in several apps.

The Bottom Line

Diagnose the direction and scope first: disable a preview mirror for a self-view issue, rotate or vertically flip a genuinely upside-down source, and verify the final outgoing video with readable text and a second viewer.
