It is a free download with a limited opening section; the complete campaign is a paid in-app purchase. Compatibility depends on the chip inside your iPhone, iPad, or Mac—not simply how new the device looks.
The minimums are an A17 Pro-or-newer iPhone, an M-series or A17 Pro iPad, or an M1-or-newer Mac, with the required operating-system versions installed. The Apple release contains the core remake, but it does not include every console feature.

What the Apple version includes
This is the full 2023 remake rather than the original 2005 game or an older mobile spin-off. It includes the remake’s modernized gameplay and reworked story presentation. Capcom describes the basic game content as the same as on other platforms, while noting differences caused by hardware and control specifications. Capcom’s iOS FAQ documents those differences.
The download lets you sample a limited part of the opening. Buying the base game unlocks the main campaign. Separate Ways is a separate paid add-on, and other cosmetic or gameplay-related items are sold separately.

- Reawaken a Classic – Resident Evil 4 preserves the essence of the original game, now reconstructed using Capcom’s proprietary RE Engine to deliver realistic visuals and additional narrative depth to the iconic story that was not possible at the time of the original release.
- Modernized Gameplay – The team from 2019’s Resident Evil 2 returns to build upon the series’ modern approach to survival horror. Engage in frenzied combat with the Ganados villagers, explore a European village gripped by madness, and solve puzzles to access new areas and collect useful items for Leon and Ashley’s constant struggle to survive.
- Overwhelming Hordes – Face hordes of rabid enemies that threaten to overwhelm Leon with even more diverse methods of attack than in the original release.
- Survive on a Knife’s Edge – Years of intense training have taught Leon new ways to use his knife, helping to even the odds against the unrelenting onslaught of enemies. By parrying enemy attacks, you can avoid debilitating damage and evade lunging enemies seeking to grab Leon and hold him in place. Make smart use of scavenged knives to deliver precise finishing moves on vulnerable enemies, and even use the element of surprise to quietly dispatch unsuspecting foes before they break.

Compatible iPhone, iPad, and Mac models
iPhone
You need iOS 17 or later and an iPhone with an A17 Pro chip or later. The standard iPhone 15 is not listed as compatible; the relevant cutoff is the chip. The App Store’s live compatibility section is the safest way to check newer generations as Apple releases them: App Store listing.
iPad
Supported iPads require iPadOS 17 or later and an M-series or A17 Pro chip. That includes qualifying Apple-silicon iPad Pro and iPad Air models, the A17 Pro iPad mini, and newer models with those chips. An older iPad Pro, Air, or mini is not automatically supported.
Mac
You need macOS 13 or later and an Apple M1 chip or later. Intel Macs are not supported. Capcom also lists MetalFX upscaling support on Mac when macOS 13 is installed. See Capcom’s macOS FAQ.

Price, free trial, and storage
The U.S. App Store page viewed on August 18, 2026 listed the following in-app prices:
| Item | U.S. price shown |
|---|---|
| Base game | $59.99 |
| Separate Ways | $9.99 |
| Extra DLC Pack | $19.99 |
Prices can vary by country, tax, promotions, and date. The app itself is free to download, but that does not make the complete game free.
The App Store lists an application size of approximately 62.6 GB. Its description also says the application is approximately 70 GB and warns that installation needs at least twice the application size in free storage. Plan for roughly 70 GB of game data and substantially more temporary space while installing; updates and platform differences can change the exact requirement.

- Return to the series origins - Discover the truth behind what led to the horrors at the Mansion in Resident Evil in this fan-favorite and popular prequel title to the series.
- Completely enhanced visuals - New high-resolution textures have been created from scratch, including 1080p support on next-gen consoles, while still preserving the classic appearance of the original release.
- Fan-favorite Resident Evil characters - Rookie S.T.A.R.S. member Rebecca Chambers and wanted criminal Billy Coen combine skills and buddy up to survive the undead and infected nightmares that await them.
- All original difficulty levels plus new Very Easy Mode for novice players
Controls: touch, controllers, and keyboard
iPhone and iPad versions can be played with on-screen touch controls, including a virtual controller. Capcom says the game is optimized for a controller, so a compatible PlayStation, Xbox, or MFi controller is the better choice for sustained play. Capcom does not guarantee that every Apple-compatible controller will work correctly.
Keyboard and mouse controls are not supported on iPhone or iPad. On Mac, mouse and keyboard operation is supported, and a controller is optional. Console-specific features such as DualSense adaptive triggers, VR, and platform audio do not carry over in the same way.

Save transfer uses iCloud Drive and is a manual upload/download process rather than guaranteed real-time synchronization. Enable iCloud Drive and use the same Apple Account on each device.
- On the source device, open Title screen → Options → iCloud → Upload.
- On the destination device, open Title screen → Options → iCloud → Download.
Capcom documents this transfer between Mac, iPhone, and iPad. Restoring a purchase and transferring a save are separate actions.

Offline play and the first launch
Capcom’s FAQ, updated July 20, 2026, gives the most specific current guidance: the first startup requires a network connection. On later launches, you must be signed in to your Apple Account and have iCloud Drive available; the game can then be played without an active connection. Reinstalling requires another connected first launch, and buying downloadable content requires connectivity.
The App Store description still contains a general startup-network statement, while its version history says version 1.0.5 removed the requirement for an internet connection at startup. Treat the FAQ’s first-launch and iCloud conditions as the practical rule.
Who should buy the Apple version?
A good fit
- You own a qualifying A17 Pro iPhone, M-series/A17 Pro iPad, or M1-or-newer Mac.
- You want a native portable version of the remake rather than streaming.
- You have ample free storage and are comfortable with a large installation.
- You value moving saves between Apple devices.
- You can use a controller on iPhone or iPad.
Consider another platform
- You have an Intel Mac or an older iPhone or iPad.
- You specifically want VR mode, RESIDENT EVIL.NET, or console-specific haptics.
- You require keyboard and mouse on a phone or tablet.
- Your device has limited storage or you do not want a demanding 3D game on a battery-powered device.
- You already own the game elsewhere and do not want to purchase a separate Apple license.
For eligible Apple hardware, this is the complete remake in a portable, cross-device package—not a cut-down mobile edition. The free download is useful for checking the opening and your device, but budget for the paid campaign, the storage headroom, and a controller if you plan to play on a touchscreen.
