Yes—but only if poor heat transfer is making your CPU or GPU throttle. Fresh thermal paste can help a component hold its clocks and recover performance lost to overheating. On a system that already runs at stable clocks, repasting usually lowers temperatures or fan noise without meaningfully changing average FPS. Check temperatures, clocks, and frame times under load before opening anything.

What thermal paste does—and what it cannot fix

Thermal paste, also called thermal interface material (TIM), fills microscopic gaps between a processor and its cooler so heat can move more effectively into the cooler. The heat path is chip to TIM to cooler, then through a heatsink, heat pipes or vapor chamber, and fans that carry heat away. Paste transfers heat; it does not add processing power. Intel’s application guide explains the material’s role and general CPU application advice.

Even good paste cannot compensate for blocked fins, a failed fan, poor case airflow, an undersized cooler, a damaged heat pipe, displaced thermal pads, or a laptop power profile that limits performance. A game can also be limited by power, voltage, CPU workload, or its own engine rather than temperature.

When lower temperatures can mean more FPS

The performance case for repasting is a chain: poor contact can raise temperature; at a thermal limit, firmware may reduce clocks or power; lower sustained performance can then reduce frame rates or worsen frame-time consistency. Intel describes processor throttling as a protective reduction in clock speed when the processor reaches its thermal limit (Intel support).

A temperature drop alone does not prove that FPS should rise. Microsoft’s thermal-design guidance describes operation in terms of workload, ambient conditions, the thermal envelope, and throttling; the relevant question is whether temperature is restricting the component’s behavior (Microsoft Learn).

  • Stable clocks, no thermal-limit activity: expect little or no average-FPS change, even if temperatures and fan noise improve.
  • Clocks fall as temperature rises during play: repasting may restore sustained performance if poor contact is the cause.
  • Average FPS changes little but frame times improve: fewer clock swings can make gameplay feel steadier or improve low-percentile results.
  • The game is capped or limited elsewhere: cooler temperatures may produce no visible FPS gain.

Diagnose the bottleneck before repasting

Look for a relationship across a sustained game or benchmark run: temperature approaches the component’s own thermal limit, clocks fall or oscillate, and FPS or frame times worsen at the same time. A high temperature by itself is not enough; some GPUs hold their intended clocks at temperatures that look high to a user. Nor does every clock drop mean overheating: power, voltage, current, utilization, or firmware limits can be responsible.

Check which component is limiting the game. A GPU running near full utilization while the CPU has headroom is generally GPU-limited, so repasting the CPU is unlikely to raise FPS. If GPU utilization is low, a CPU thread or game engine may be holding performance back. Monitoring tools can show temperatures, clocks, power, utilization, and reported limit activity, but they do not establish causation without a repeatable workload.

CPU, GPU, and laptop repasting are different jobs

Desktop CPU

This is generally the most accessible case when the cooler is designed for user installation. Repasting is most justified after removing the cooler, correcting poor mounting, or finding that temperatures have climbed and the CPU throttles under sustained load. Intel advises removing old TIM rather than putting fresh material on top when reinstalling a processor or cooler (Intel support).

Desktop GPU

Opening a graphics card is more involved. The cooler may contact the GPU die as well as memory and voltage-regulation components, with pads or putty at interfaces beyond the die. Incorrect pad thickness, misplaced material, or poor reassembly can worsen contact or leave components inadequately cooled. Consider GPU repasting when sustained testing shows a real problem—such as clocks falling with temperature or an unusually large core-to-hotspot difference for that model—and only if you have the exact card’s service information and understand warranty implications. Do not open a card just because a paste advertises a higher conductivity rating.

Gaming laptop

Laptop heatsinks, pressure frames, pads, putty, and shared CPU/GPU cooling vary by model. Improving CPU contact may not improve a game if the GPU remains the limiting component, while changing one interface can alter the thermal balance of the shared cooling system. Find model-specific service instructions first; for a first-time repair, manufacturer or qualified service may be safer than DIY.

Why a premium paste does not promise more frames

Real performance depends on more than a compound’s advertised thermal-conductivity figure: application amount and thickness, mounting pressure, contact flatness, chip size, heat load, cooler design, ambient temperature, and long-term behavior all matter. Conductivity numbers from different vendors are not necessarily comparable as gaming-performance measurements.

Noctua’s own NT-H1 versus NT-H2 comparison says results depend on factors such as application, pressure, and heat load; in its standardized testing, the difference was up to about 2°C, not a universal FPS increase (Noctua’s comparison). The same manufacturer reports the advantage can be negligible on a 65 W processor and more visible at higher heat loads. A correctly mounted ordinary compound can outperform a premium compound applied poorly.

Measure before and after so the result is meaningful

Establish a baseline before disassembly. Use the same game scene, save point, replay, or benchmark at the same resolution, graphics settings, upscaling mode, frame cap, and power and fan profiles. Record average FPS and 1% lows or frame-time percentiles alongside CPU and GPU temperatures, clocks, utilization, power, and GPU hotspot temperature when available. Note room temperature and fan behavior.

ARCTIC MX-7 (4 g, incl. MX-Cleaner) - Ultimate Performance Thermal Paste
  • NEXT-LEVEL THERMAL PERFORMANCE: MX-7 features a performance-optimized, dense, and highly viscous consistency. Its high filler content ensures exceptional heat transfer
  • LONG-TERM STABILITY: High cohesion prevents pump-out, dry-out, or bleeding even under repeated thermal cycles, ensuring long-lasting and consistent performance without the need for frequent reapplication
  • PERFECT APPLICATION: MX-7 cannot be spread manually by design. Its low adhesion allows the paste to distribute naturally under cooler pressure, forming a thin bond line without trapping air bubbles
  • SAFE FOR ALL DEVICES: MX-7 is electrically non-conductive and non-capacitive, making it completely safe for CPUs, GPUs, laptops, consoles, and other, no risk of short circuits or electrical discharge
  • INCLUDES MX CLEANER: Thoroughly removes old thermal paste and prepares contact surfaces for optimal performance before applying new thermal compound.
  1. Warm the system consistently, then run the same sustained scene or benchmark at least three times.
  2. Keep the game and driver versions, background applications, case or laptop position, and ambient conditions as consistent as practical.
  3. After repasting, repeat the same runs and compare the median results rather than a single pass.
  4. Compare clocks and limit indicators at the moments performance falls, not just idle temperatures or a peak temperature reading.

If drivers, fan curves, dust, room temperature, power settings, BIOS settings, overclocking, undervolting, or cooler pressure also changed, the comparison cannot isolate paste as the cause. Treat synthetic benchmark changes as evidence about that workload, not a guarantee of the same FPS change in every game.

If a desktop CPU repaste is justified

The following is general guidance for a conventional desktop CPU cooler, not a universal procedure for laptops, GPUs, liquid-metal systems, or every socket. Follow the cooler and processor maker’s model-specific instructions where they differ.

  1. Shut down the PC and disconnect power. Remove the cooler according to its manufacturer’s instructions.
  2. If old paste has bonded the surfaces, gently twist the cooler before lifting it rather than pulling abruptly.
  3. Clean old material from the CPU heat spreader and cooler base with lint-free material and high-purity isopropyl alcohol. Let both surfaces dry completely. Do not apply new paste over old or disturbed TIM.
  4. Apply a small amount at the center of the CPU heat spreader, unless the cooler or paste maker specifies another method. Intel suggests a small central amount; cooler pressure spreads it. Too little can leave gaps, while excess can increase the separation between surfaces or spill onto the board (Intel’s guide).
  5. Seat the cooler evenly. Gradually tighten screw-mounted coolers in a diagonal or cross pattern rather than fully tightening one corner first.
  6. Reconnect the fan or pump, confirm the cooler is secure, and test under the same sustained conditions used for the baseline.

Intel says repasting is generally not needed more often than every few years, but advises replacing TIM when a cooler is removed or temperatures are climbing. That is manufacturer guidance, not a mandatory schedule for every PC.

Try lower-risk fixes first—or troubleshoot a failed repaste

Before disassembly, clean dust from filters, fans, and heatsink fins; check that fans work and the fan curve is sensible; verify case airflow; and make sure a desktop cooler is not loose. For laptops, use a hard surface with unobstructed intake vents. An FPS cap can reduce unnecessary heat, while supported power-limit adjustments or undervolting may help on some platforms. A cooling stand is useful only if it improves that laptop’s actual intake airflow.

If temperatures or performance are unchanged or worse after a CPU repaste, check that the fan or pump is connected, the cooler’s protective film was removed, mounting is even, and the cooler is making contact. Inspect for displaced material or contamination and repeat a sustained test. Intel’s troubleshooting materials cover thermal-solution compatibility, fan connections, installation, and system cooling (overheating symptoms; thermal-solution troubleshooting; system cooling).

Choose the next step

  • Repaste: sustained tests show temperature-related clock loss, the cooler has been removed or contact is suspect, and you have the right instructions and materials.
  • Clean and retest: temperatures are high but clocks remain stable, or dust, airflow, fan behavior, and mounting have not yet been checked.
  • Do not open it yet: the system is under warranty, it is a laptop or complex GPU without model-specific service guidance, or FPS is limited by something other than thermal throttling.

Liquid metal is electrically conductive and is not a routine substitute for conventional paste; compatibility, insulation, mounting, and maintenance require care. For uncertain GPU or laptop work, missing pad specifications, damaged hardware, or persistent overheating after a repair, stop and consult the manufacturer or a qualified service provider. Warranty consequences depend on the product, seller, manufacturer, and country, so check the applicable policy before disassembly.
