Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsRoblox Error Code 279, often shown as ID=17: Connection attempt failed or Failed to connect to the Game, means the Roblox client could not establish a connection to an experience’s game server. It identifies where joining failed, not the exact cause: the problem may be Roblox, one experience, your device, or the network. Start by checking Roblox status and testing another experience before changing security or network settings.
Start with the checks that narrow down the cause
- Check Roblox status. Open Roblox Status and look specifically for Games and Game Join. If there is an incident, wait for it to be resolved rather than changing your device or router settings. An operational status page does not rule out a regional, ISP-specific, account-specific, or individual-experience problem.
- Try another experience. If other experiences work, the failing experience or its server may be the issue. If none work, continue.
- Close Roblox and restart your device. Reopen Roblox and test the original experience and a second one.
- Restart your router or modem if other devices on the same connection also struggle to join.
- Disconnect a VPN or proxy temporarily and test again. These services can change routing or interfere with game traffic; buying or switching to a VPN is not a general fix.
- Test another trusted connection, such as a phone hotspot. This helps distinguish a device problem from a home, school, work, or ISP network restriction.
Roblox’s status page showed Game Join as operational on August 18, 2026; that is a dated snapshot, not a statement about its live status now. Check the status page when the error occurs.
Use the symptoms to choose the next step
| What happens | Where to investigate |
|---|---|
| Only one experience fails | The experience may be broken, overloaded, private, restricted, or affected by a server-side issue. Try other experiences; if the failure remains isolated, contact the creator. |
| Every experience fails on one device, but another device works on the same Wi-Fi | The affected device: Roblox files, permissions, firewall or security software, VPN/proxy, or local network configuration. |
| Every device fails on the same Wi-Fi, but one works on another network | The router, ISP, DNS filtering, parental controls, school/work rules, or blocked game traffic. |
| Every device and network fails | Check Roblox status; also consider regional routing or an account- or experience-specific problem. Gather details and contact Roblox Support if it continues. |
Roblox notes that a problematic experience or script can prevent an experience from running correctly. A working website, app launch, or chat does not prove that the separate connection to a game server is working. See Roblox’s general connection guidance.
Fixes for Windows
Allow Roblox through firewall and security software
- Open your firewall or security product’s app permissions and find Roblox.
- Allow Roblox to access the internet. If an existing Roblox rule is present, remove and recreate it or update the security product.
- Relaunch Roblox and test more than one experience.
Roblox identifies firewall and antivirus software as common sources of connection problems. If you briefly disable protection only as a controlled test, turn it back on immediately and create an allow rule instead of leaving protection off. See Roblox’s firewall and router guidance.

Check browser launch problems
If you start Roblox from a browser, update the browser and try another current browser, such as Chrome, Edge, or Firefox. Temporarily disable ad blockers or privacy extensions to test whether they are blocking the launch handoff. If the website opens but joining still fails in the Roblox client, continue with client and network checks rather than treating it as a browser-only issue. Roblox discusses browser settings and add-ons in its general connection guidance.
Reinstall Roblox
- On Windows 11, open Control Panel → Programs → Programs and Features, select Roblox, and choose Uninstall. On older Windows instructions, the path may appear as Settings → Apps → Apps & features.
- Close Roblox and any related installer, then restart Windows.
- Install Roblox again from the official Roblox download page or the official Microsoft Store listing used for your installation.
- Launch Roblox and test the same experience plus another one.
Reinstallation can replace damaged local files; it will not fix a network that blocks game traffic. Roblox recommends reinstalling for Error 279 in its Error Code 279 instructions.
Clear local Roblox data if reinstalling did not help
Use this only if you are comfortable deleting the Roblox folder in your own Windows user profile. Close Roblox first, and do not delete unrelated folders.

- Uninstall Roblox using the steps above.
- Press Win+R, type
cmd, and press Enter. - Run these commands, pressing Enter after each:
cd %LOCALAPPDATA%
rmdir /s Roblox
Confirm deletion when prompted, restart Windows, then reinstall Roblox from the official download page. The deletion targets the local Roblox folder under the current Windows profile. Roblox describes clearing local data as a way to remove potentially corrupted files in its Error Code 279 instructions.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

In Command Prompt, run ipconfig /flushdns, then retry Roblox. This clears the Windows DNS resolver cache; it cannot repair a firewall rule, a Roblox outage, a broken experience, or a router that drops game traffic. Do not make DNS changes your first response to Error 279.
Save Windows Network Reset for wider connection problems
Consider Windows Network Reset only if other applications also have connectivity trouble and the simpler checks have failed. A reset can remove or reset network adapters, VPN configurations, and other network settings; it is more disruptive than restarting Roblox or the router.

Fixes for macOS
- Quit Roblox completely and restart the Mac.
- Remove Roblox and reinstall it from the official Roblox download page.
- Open System Settings → Privacy & Security and check whether Roblox was denied a permission it needs.
- Disconnect a VPN or proxy for a test, then try another trusted network if available.
- Check router restrictions, content filters, antivirus, and other security software if the problem is limited to this Mac or network.
Roblox’s Error 279 instructions cover macOS 10.13 High Sierra and later, but a listed baseline does not guarantee that every old Mac remains compatible with the current app. For a targeted additional check, if Roblox appears under System Settings → Privacy & Security → Local Network, allow it and relaunch. Some users have reported this permission being relevant after macOS changes; it is an anecdotal check, not a confirmed universal fix (Roblox Help discussion). If the setting is absent, do not install third-party tools or alter unrelated permissions.
Fixes for iPhone and iPad
- Restart the device.
- Force-close Roblox: on a Face ID device, swipe up from the bottom and pause to open the app switcher, then swipe Roblox away. On a Home-button device, double-click Home and swipe Roblox away.
- Delete Roblox and reinstall it from the App Store.
- Check that the device’s date and time are accurate.
- Try another Wi-Fi network or mobile data, where available.
Roblox’s Error 279 article lists iOS 12 and later for these steps; current App Store compatibility may be narrower.

Check router, firewall, and network restrictions
Roblox’s connection guidance identifies UDP 49152–65535 as the relevant port range. Roblox also says client ports are dynamically selected for outgoing traffic, rather than using one fixed port for every session. Start by allowing Roblox in the device firewall, then check router parental controls, access-control lists, DNS filtering, and school or workplace network rules. See general connection problems and firewall and router issues.
- Do not begin with arbitrary port forwarding; it is not guaranteed to solve the problem and can expose services unnecessarily.
- If a network blocks UDP traffic broadly, ask its administrator or your ISP whether Roblox game traffic is restricted.
- If Roblox works on a hotspot but not home Wi-Fi, focus on the home router, ISP, or filtering rules rather than repeatedly reinstalling the app.
Requirements and limits worth checking
Roblox’s error-code overview gives approximate internet guidance of 4–8 Mb/s or above, and says to use an updated supported operating system and meet the applicable computer or mobile requirements. It also says virtual machines and cloud-based computers are not supported. A speed-test download number alone does not establish that a connection is suitable: latency, packet loss, filtering, NAT behavior, and UDP handling can matter. A faster plan is not a guaranteed Error 279 fix. Large experiences may also take longer to download on slow connections, so distinguish a slow load from a failed join; see Roblox’s general connection guidance.
What not to do
- Do not leave antivirus or your firewall permanently disabled; allow Roblox through the relevant control instead.
- Do not download unofficial Roblox clients or “repair” utilities, or delete random Windows folders.
- Do not assume a DNS flush, port forwarding, or a paid VPN will fix a connection-establishment failure.
- Do not repeatedly reinstall Roblox when every device on the same network fails; test another network and investigate filtering or routing instead.
When to contact Roblox Support or your ISP
Contact Roblox Support if the error persists across multiple experiences and networks after the appropriate device checks, or if status does not explain a widespread failure. Roblox’s connection support guidance asks for useful diagnostic details. Include:
- Your Roblox username and the exact error text, including ID 17 if shown.
- The date and time of the failure, including your time zone.
- Device model, operating-system version, and Roblox app/client version if visible.
- Which experiences fail and whether all experiences are affected.
- Whether another device on the same network works, and whether the affected device works on another network.
- Recent Roblox, OS, router, antivirus, VPN, or network-setting changes.
- A screenshot or screen recording if it is safe and useful.
Contact your ISP or network administrator when multiple devices fail on the same connection, particularly if Roblox works on a hotspot or another network. Provide the same-network versus alternate-network test results and ask whether filtering or UDP game traffic is restricted.
