For most live streams, start with 2 B-frames when using NVENC H.264 or streaming to YouTube. Use 0–1 when latency and compatibility matter most, 0 as the conservative AMD starting point documented by OBS, and 3 only when following Quick Sync’s recording baseline. Do not treat 4 as a universal quality setting: B-frames can improve compression, but they can also add reordering delay and encoder complexity.

The number is a ceiling, not a promise that every encoded sequence will contain that many B-frames. Your encoder, codec, platform, bitrate, frame rate and latency target all matter.

What Max B-frames controls

Video encoders divide a stream into different frame types:

  • I-frames (keyframes) are self-contained images.
  • P-frames predict from earlier reference frames.
  • B-frames predict from frames before and after them.

A simplified GOP might look like I B B P B B P. B-frames can describe predictable motion efficiently, preserving more detail at a fixed bitrate. However, Max B-frames means the maximum number of consecutive B-frames the encoder may choose; adaptive decisions can produce fewer.

This setting is separate from the keyframe interval, reference-frame count, lookahead, GOP size and B-frame as reference. YouTube’s recommendation of a two-second keyframe interval is not the same as “two B-frames.”

Quick recommendations

Workflow Starting value Why
YouTube Live with supported H.264 settings 2 YouTube’s current guidance lists 2 B-frames and 1 reference frame.
NVENC H.264 live streaming 2 Matches OBS’s NVENC baseline and is a sensible general test.
Compatibility-first or interactive low-latency streaming 0–1 Limits frame reordering and reduces the number of variables while troubleshooting.
AMD hardware encoder 0 OBS’s documented recording baseline uses zero; this is a conservative starting point, not a rule for every Radeon system.
Intel Quick Sync 3 for OBS’s recording baseline OBS lists 3 for recording, but that value is not a universal live-platform requirement.
Local recording or VOD production 2 or the encoder’s documented baseline Latency is less important, so additional compression efficiency may be worth testing.

Platform requirements take priority over generic settings. YouTube currently recommends H.264, HEVC or AV1 ingestion as applicable, CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (never more than four seconds), and 2 B-frames with 1 reference frame: YouTube’s live encoder settings. Do not automatically transfer that recommendation to Twitch, Kick, Facebook Live or another service without checking its current documentation.

How to find the control in OBS Studio

  1. Open OBS Studio and select Settings.
  2. Open Output.
  3. Change Output Mode to Advanced.
  4. Select the Streaming tab, not just Recording.
  5. Choose your encoder and codec.
  6. Find Max B-frames, B-frames or the encoder-specific equivalent.

Labels and available fields vary by OBS version, operating system, GPU generation, driver, codec and whether the encoder is a current or legacy implementation. Current OBS documentation describes encoder-specific controls rather than an identical form for every system: NVENC options and the standard output guide.

Choosing a value by encoder

NVIDIA NVENC

OBS lists 2 B-frames in its NVENC recording baseline. For ordinary H.264 streaming, 2 is the best first comparison. Increasing the maximum is not an automatic upgrade; at a generous bitrate, the visual difference may be negligible, while latency and analysis cost can rise.

For HEVC and AV1, OBS documents a separate B-frame as reference option. That option is not the same as increasing the maximum count and should only be enabled where the selected codec and encoder support it. OBS discusses it, along with lookahead controls, at its advanced NVENC documentation.

AMD AMF

OBS’s recording guide lists Max B-frames: 0 for AMD. Use 0 when you need a cautious, broadly compatible starting point or do not yet know how your specific GPU, driver and codec behave. This does not mean every AMD configuration must remain at zero; test 1 or 2 only after the baseline is stable.

Intel Quick Sync

OBS lists 3 B-frames for its Quick Sync recording baseline. Treat that as a recording-oriented reference, not a promise that every live ingest service or Intel generation should use 3.

x264

x264 tuning in OBS is normally driven by the CPU preset, bitrate and VBV behavior for streaming, or CRF for recording. The interface may not expose a matching B-frame field on every installation. Avoid pasting undocumented command-line overrides into custom options; use the controls your OBS build actually provides.

When to use 0, 1, 2 or more

Choose 0

  • You need the lowest practical encoding and playback latency.
  • A platform, decoder or capture workflow reports compatibility problems.
  • You are creating a simple troubleshooting control condition.
  • Your AMD setup follows OBS’s conservative baseline.

Choose 1

Use 1 when you want a modest compression benefit but 2 introduces noticeable delay or questionable compatibility. It is a cautious compromise for moderately dynamic content.

Choose 2

Use 2 for normal NVENC H.264 streaming and for YouTube’s documented live settings, provided the rest of the configuration is stable.

Choose 3 or more

Consider 3 or higher mainly for local recording, VOD production or a specifically verified encoder-and-platform combination. More B-frames cannot compensate for insufficient bitrate, an unstable upload, excessive resolution or an overloaded encoder.

Latency, quality and the “smoothness” misconception

B-frames require frame reordering. That can contribute to delay, especially alongside lookahead, larger GOP structures, complex reference schemes or small buffering windows. The amount is implementation-dependent; there is no reliable universal millisecond figure.

NVIDIA’s encoder guidance distinguishes quality-oriented use from low-latency streaming and shows no B-frames in its cited low-latency example. That is encoder guidance rather than a mandatory OBS setting, and it varies with codec, GPU generation and integration: NVIDIA Video Encoder API Programming Guide.

B-frames generally affect compression efficiency and reordering, not frame pacing. Perceived smoothness is more often determined by stable rendering, consistent capture, adequate upload capacity, an appropriate frame rate and the viewer’s device.

Test the setting instead of guessing

  1. Save or duplicate the current OBS profile.
  2. Write down encoder, codec, resolution, FPS, bitrate, keyframe interval, preset, lookahead and current B-frame value.
  3. Use the same game, route and scene for every run, including a fast camera-pan or particle-heavy section.
  4. Run a private, unlisted or platform test stream where available.
  5. Test 0, 2 and your encoder’s documented baseline if it differs.
  6. Change only the B-frame value between runs.
  7. Compare OBS statistics, CPU/GPU load, text and HUD clarity, motion artifacts, end-to-end delay and playback on another device or network.

Keep the lowest value that provides equivalent image quality without compatibility or latency problems. Keep bitrate and every other setting identical; otherwise a higher-quality result may simply have received more bandwidth.

Diagnose the actual source of stutter

Open OBS’s statistics panel while the problem occurs:

Statistic or symptom Likely area Useful response
Dropped frames (network) Upload route, bitrate, Wi‑Fi, ISP or ingest server Check connection and server choice; do not start by changing B-frames.
Frames missed due to rendering lag GPU saturation, uncapped game FPS, complex scenes or browser sources Limit game FPS, simplify scenes or reduce output load.
Skipped frames due to encoding lag Encoder preset, resolution, FPS or concurrent workloads Use a faster preset, then reduce resolution or FPS if necessary.
Viewers buffer while OBS is clean Viewer connection/device, platform delivery or missing transcoding Check audience conditions and bitrate; broadcaster statistics alone cannot rule this out.
Macroblocking during rapid motion Bitrate or scene complexity Adjust bitrate, resolution, FPS or codec before assuming B-frames are the fix.

OBS explains the difference between broadcaster-side dropped frames and viewer buffering in its stream-buffering troubleshooting guide. System load also depends on encoder, resolution, FPS and scene complexity, not just minimum hardware requirements: OBS system requirements.

If changing B-frames makes the stream worse

  1. Revert to 2 for NVENC/H.264 or 0 for a conservative AMD baseline.
  2. Temporarily disable lookahead.
  3. Disable B-frame-as-reference unless your codec and encoder documentation explicitly support it.
  4. For services that specify it, verify a two-second keyframe interval.
  5. If OBS reports encoding lag, lower the encoder preset before reducing output resolution; reduce resolution or FPS if overload remains.
  6. Check OBS statistics and the platform’s ingest warnings.
  7. Save the working profile before updating OBS or GPU drivers.

If the field is missing, Simple Output mode may still be active, the selected encoder or codec may not expose it, or the implementation may be legacy. Use the encoder’s defaults rather than forcing undocumented AMF, NVENC or FFmpeg parameters. Streaming and recording can use separate encoders, so changing the Recording tab does not necessarily change the stream; separate encoders can also consume additional resources, as described in OBS’s output guide.

The practical decision

Start at 2 for NVENC H.264 or YouTube, 0 for a conservative AMD baseline, and 0–1 when latency or compatibility is the priority. Test a documented Quick Sync value of 3 primarily in recording workflows. If the stream is not smooth, inspect network, rendering and encoding statistics before changing B-frames: this control is a compression and reordering trade-off, not a universal stutter cure.
