As of August 16, 2026, an officially listed PS5 in Japan costs ¥55,000 to ¥137,980, tax included, depending on the model. The ¥55,000 console is a Japanese-language-only Digital Edition that supports Japan-region accounts; it is not the ordinary international PS5 Digital Edition. Most overseas buyers should compare the ¥89,980 multilingual Digital Edition, ¥97,980 disc-drive PS5, or ¥137,980 PS5 Pro instead.
Tokyo PS5 prices at a glance
Sony Japan’s recommended retail prices below include Japan’s 10% consumption tax. They are official MSRPs, not guarantees of branch-level stock or street pricing.
| Model | Tax-included MSRP | Approx. tax-free price* | Key distinction |
|---|---|---|---|
| Digital Edition, Japanese-language-only | ¥55,000 | About ¥50,000 | Japanese menus and Japan-region accounts only; no disc drive |
| Japanese-language-only Digital Edition + second DualSense | ¥65,000 | About ¥59,091 | Same language and account restrictions; two controllers |
| Digital Edition, multilingual | ¥89,980 | About ¥81,800 | No included disc drive; supports languages other than Japanese |
| Standard PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray drive | ¥97,980 | About ¥89,073 | Physical-game and Blu-ray drive included |
| PS5 Pro | ¥137,980 | About ¥125,436 | Performance-focused model; confirm display and game requirements |
*These are arithmetic estimates dividing the tax-included price by 1.1. Actual tax-free transactions require eligibility, an authorized shop, and the store’s procedures. Sony revised the regular PS5 models and PS5 Pro on April 2, 2026; the ¥55,000 Japanese-language-only Digital Edition remained at that price. The ¥55,000 model is not the normal international PS5
Sony’s product code for this 825GB console is PCFI-2200B01, released November 21, 2025. Sony says it has the same core performance as other PS5 Digital Edition consoles and accepts a separately sold compatible disc drive, but its restrictions are decisive for travelers:
#1 Best Overall
- Model Number CFI-2000
- Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)
- Vertical Stand sold seperately
- The system language is Japanese only.
- It supports PlayStation accounts whose country/region is Japan; non-Japanese accounts are unsupported.
- Sony describes it as intended for domestic Japanese use and advises against overseas use because it complies only with Japanese safety standards.
Read Sony’s Japanese-language-only PS5 support information before considering this model. A low price is not simply a discount on the multilingual console.
How tourist tax-free shopping works
Eligible non-resident visitors can buy qualifying goods without Japan’s consumption tax at participating authorized tax-free shops. General goods such as electronics generally require at least ¥5,000 before tax in a same-store, same-day purchase. The National Tax Agency eligibility rules apply; a normal tax-included shelf price is not automatically reduced for every visitor.
What you must do
- Present the required passport and meet non-resident eligibility rules.
- Buy from a participating tax-free retailer and satisfy its minimum-purchase and identification procedures.
- Take the console out of Japan. Japan Customs can collect the consumption tax if tax-free goods are not exported; see its guidance.
- Ask whether the shop deducts service fees and whether opening or using the item before departure affects its process.
Japan’s system is scheduled to move to a refund method for purchases made from November 1, 2026. Details are published by the Japan Tourism Agency.

Which Tokyo PS5 should you buy?
For a Japan resident or Japan-account user
The ¥55,000 Digital Edition can make sense if Japanese menus, a Japan-region PlayStation Store account, and domestic use are all acceptable. The ¥65,000 bundle adds a second DualSense but does not remove those restrictions.
For an overseas traveler wanting digital games
Choose the ¥89,980 multilingual Digital Edition only after confirming the exact SKU, supported languages, power requirements, and warranty arrangements. A compatible disc drive can be added later, but its price is extra.
For physical games, used discs, or resale
The ¥97,980 standard PS5 includes the Ultra HD Blu-ray drive. The higher upfront cost buys flexibility for used, borrowed, imported, and resold discs.

- 🚀 CPU: 3.5GHz, 8-core AMD Zen 2
- 🚀 Storage: Custom 825GB SSD
- 🚀 RAM: 16GB GDDR6
- 🚀 GPU: 10.3 teraflop RDNA 2 GPU
For maximum console performance
The ¥137,980 PS5 Pro is a premium purchase, not automatically a better value. Confirm that your display and the games you play justify the premium.
For local multiplayer
The ¥65,000 two-controller bundle is relevant only if its Japanese-language and Japan-account limitations fit your household. Otherwise, pair the multilingual model with separately purchased controllers.

Accounts and digital stores
A PlayStation account’s country/region is fixed after creation, and Store content varies by region. Sony also warns that DLC and product codes can require the same country/region as the game or account. Check Sony’s account-region guidance. Do not buy the ¥55,000 model if you need an existing U.S., Canadian, British, or other non-Japanese account.

- Enjoy smooth and fluid high frame rate gameplay at up to 120 fps for compatible games, with support for 120Hz output on 4K displays.
- PS5 consoles support an 8K output, so you can play games on your 4320p resolution display.
- Maximize your play sessions with near-instant load times for installed PS5 games.
- 825GB SSD allows ultra-fast load times, while 3-D audio output produces crisp acoustics.
- Explore uncharted virtual territories and slay dragons with this sleek Sony PlayStation 5 gaming console.
Menus, games, and discs
Console language, Store region, disc compatibility, and in-game language are separate questions. Game languages vary by title. Inspect a physical game’s packaging, buy downloads from your normal regional Store, and never assume a Japanese voucher or DLC code will redeem on an overseas account.
Power, safety, and warranty
Confirm the model’s electrical specification before connecting it abroad and check accessory and disc-drive compatibility. Sony Japan states that new PS5 and PS5 Pro consoles have a one-year warranty from purchase, but overseas service may be inconvenient or unavailable. Keep the receipt, box, model number, and warranty documents; review Sony Japan’s warranty terms.
Travel and customs
Check your airline’s current carry-on dimensions and weight rules, protect the console from impact, and review destination-country customs or import obligations. Policies differ by airline and country.

Where to look in Tokyo
Start with large authorized electronics retailers and Sony-authorized sellers in Akihabara, Shinjuku, Shibuya, Ikebukuro, Ueno, and the Tokyo Station area. Yodobashi Camera, Bic Camera, Amazon Japan, and Sony Japan are useful starting points, but online listings and branch inventory change quickly. Sony warns that not every store carries every product; contact the retailer before traveling to a branch.
Before paying, verify:
- The exact model number and whether the box says Japanese-language-only.
- New versus used or refurbished condition.
- Tax-free eligibility, passport procedure, and any service fee.
- Return terms and the practical location of warranty service.
- Whether the seller is the retailer itself or a marketplace merchant.
Is buying a PS5 in Tokyo actually cheaper?
There is no universal bargain without a purchase-date exchange rate and an exact-model comparison. Calculate the landed cost:
Effective cost = Tokyo price (tax-free if eligible, otherwise tax-included) × exchange rate + card or foreign-exchange fees + baggage or shipping + possible import costs + expected warranty or return cost.
Sony’s April 2026 U.S. recommended prices were $599.99 for the Digital Edition, $649.99 for the standard PS5, and $899.99 for PS5 Pro. Compare those figures with current U.S. sales tax and your live exchange rate, rather than treating yen and dollar MSRPs as a fixed conversion.
The ¥55,000 Japanese-language-only console is dramatically cheaper on paper because it is a restricted domestic product. The multilingual models may offer little or no saving after exchange costs, luggage, and warranty risk, although an eligible tax-free purchase can improve the calculation.
Checks to make before checkout
- Decide whether you need Japanese-only or multilingual system software.
- Choose Digital, disc-drive, or Pro based on your games and display.
- Read the box and confirm the exact SKU and included accessories.
- Ask the retailer about tax-free eligibility, fees, returns, and warranty service.
- Confirm power, account, DLC, voucher, airline, and destination-customs implications.
- Keep all receipts and documentation for departure and any future service claim.
The Bottom Line
The cheapest official Tokyo PS5 is ¥55,000, but it is a Japanese-language-only, Japan-account console intended for domestic use. For most international buyers, the safer choices are the ¥89,980 multilingual Digital Edition or ¥97,980 disc PS5; tax-free eligibility may reduce those prices, but model compatibility, stock, exchange rates, baggage, and warranty terms determine the real cost.
