Those symptoms point to different fixes. On Windows, start by closing the stuck process, restarting the PC, updating Windows and Microsoft Store apps, then repairing the launcher before considering a reset or reinstall. Java and Bedrock also have different dependencies, so test them separately.
Find the point where it freezes

A second launcher process may be running invisibly, and the window may also be behind another app or on another monitor. Check the taskbar and other displays before resetting anything. If the Store is downloading an update, check its download queue rather than repeatedly stopping the process.
Try the low-risk Windows fixes first
Close the launcher and end a genuinely stuck process
- Click the launcher window’s X and reopen it if it closes normally.
- If it does not respond, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Minecraft Launcher, then choose End task. Close a related Xbox or Microsoft Store process only if it is clearly stuck as part of the failed launch; do not terminate arbitrary Windows services.
- Open the launcher again. Ending a process can lose unsaved launcher state, but it is not the same as deleting Minecraft worlds.
Restart Windows
Restart the PC before moving to more disruptive steps. A restart clears a hung process and reloads Windows, Store, Xbox, and authentication components. Microsoft also recommends a restart in its guidance for installation or removal failures: troubleshooting programs that will not install or uninstall.
Install pending updates
- Open Start > Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates, install available updates, and restart if prompted.
- Open Microsoft Store > Library > Get updates. Update Minecraft Launcher and any pending Store or Xbox components.
- Open the Xbox app and install any pending update shown there.
- If the launcher opens, check Settings > About for launcher updates. Minecraft lists that update location and its official installation options on its download page.
Microsoft’s Store-app troubleshooting sequence also starts with updating Windows and Microsoft Store before escalating to repair, reset, or reinstall.

Repair the launcher before resetting it
In Windows 10 or 11, open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps, search for Minecraft Launcher, select its three-dot menu, then choose Advanced options. Select Repair, reopen the launcher, and test it. If it is still stuck, return to that screen and choose Reset. Windows labels can vary slightly by version; Microsoft documents the Repair and Reset options.
Repair is the less disruptive option. Reset clears app data and can remove sign-in state or settings, so you may need to sign in again. It is not the same as uninstalling Minecraft, but behavior can vary by launcher version. If Advanced options is missing, the launcher may be installed as a traditional desktop app rather than a Store app.
Reset the Microsoft Store cache for download or update hangs
If the launcher stalls while opening, installing, or updating, reset the Store cache:

- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
wsreset.exeand select OK. - Wait for the blank command window to close and Microsoft Store to open, then retry the update or installation.
Microsoft documents wsreset.exe as the Store-cache reset method and notes that the blank window can remain open briefly: Microsoft Store installation troubleshooting. This resets the Store cache; it does not reset all Minecraft Launcher data.

A launcher that stalls after you select an account may be waiting on authentication rather than failing to start. Check the following in order:
- Confirm that the launcher is signed in with the Microsoft account that owns Minecraft. A launcher that opens but reports that you do not own the game may be using the wrong account; that is an entitlement issue, not proof that the app is frozen.
- Check that Microsoft Store and the Xbox app use the intended account, and see whether the Xbox app can sign in. If the controls are available, sign out of the affected app once and sign back in rather than repeatedly switching accounts during an update.
- If the same account cannot sign in elsewhere, use Microsoft’s Sign-in Helper.
- For a child or family-managed account, check whether its permissions allow the game, sign-in, or installation.
- Set Windows date and time, time zone, and clock synchronization correctly. Incorrect time can interfere with authentication and updates; Microsoft includes time settings among its Windows Update troubleshooting checks.
- Temporarily disconnect a VPN or proxy, test another network if possible, and check for a captive Wi-Fi login page. A firewall, antivirus product, DNS filter, corporate proxy, or parental-control tool may block a required connection.
Do not change your Windows region just to force an app to appear in Store. Microsoft notes that Store availability can depend on region and that users need the correct account: Microsoft Store app availability guidance. A local reinstall will not resolve a Microsoft-account or service-side failure.

If Bedrock is the only edition that hangs
On PC, Bedrock is Minecraft for Windows. Its Windows Store and Xbox dependencies make a launcher-only reinstall an incomplete test. If the launcher itself opens but Bedrock will not download or start, use the same Installed apps > three-dot menu > Advanced options route to repair components that are listed on your PC.
- Repair Minecraft Launcher, then test.
- If the problem remains, repair Minecraft for Windows, then Xbox.
- If listed, repair Gaming Services and Microsoft Store.
- Restart Windows, open Microsoft Store, select Library > Get updates, then test Bedrock again.
- Use Reset for an affected app only after its Repair option fails, keeping in mind that it may clear that app’s data or sign-in state.
If Store downloads fail across multiple apps, treat that as a Store or Windows issue rather than evidence that Minecraft alone is broken. Do not run PowerShell commands copied from forums to remove or reinstall Gaming Services: a current first-party command sequence is not established here, and such commands can affect other Xbox games.

If Java Edition is the only edition that hangs
First distinguish a launcher freeze from a Java game freeze. If the launcher opens, test a clean, unmodded release profile. Temporarily avoid snapshots, modded profiles, custom installations, and third-party launchers; if vanilla works, add the custom components back one at a time to identify the conflict.

- If the launcher hangs while selecting or starting a Java profile, check that profile’s Java and game-directory settings. Current launcher configurations can manage Java differently, so installing a separate Java runtime is not a universal fix.
- If the game freezes only after Play, check available disk space and memory, then update the graphics driver through your computer or graphics-card manufacturer.
- Before changing a game directory or configuration, back up worlds, screenshots, resource packs, mods, and custom-profile data. Do not delete the entire
.minecraftfolder as a first step. - If you need to test whether configuration data is involved, use a new game directory from the launcher’s installation controls when possible. If the launcher cannot open, back up relevant data before renaming any configuration folder; exact locations differ by operating system, launcher build, and custom directory.
Minecraft’s PC edition page lists Java support for Windows 10 64-bit and Windows on ARM, macOS 12 or later, and Linux 64-bit. It also lists separate hardware and memory guidance; check the page for current requirements rather than assuming a Java-profile problem needs a new PC.

Overlays, VPNs, proxy clients, third-party antivirus, screen recorders, hardware-monitoring or overclocking utilities, RGB tools, device-management software, and aggressive web filters can interfere with an app or its sign-in. If a specific product is a plausible cause, make a controlled temporary test and restore its protection immediately. Do not leave Windows security or third-party antivirus disabled.

- Press the Windows key, type
msconfig, and open System Configuration. - On Services, select Hide all Microsoft services, then select Disable all.
- Open the Startup tab, open Task Manager, and disable startup items for the test.
- Restart and test the launcher. If it works, re-enable items in groups to find the conflict.
- Restore normal startup when finished. Follow Microsoft’s clean-boot procedure and its steps for returning to normal startup.
Reinstall only after repair and Store recovery
If updates, repair, reset, and the Store-cache step do not help, reinstall the launcher from the official Minecraft download page or Microsoft Store. Minecraft lists both as official installation routes. Avoid unofficial mirrors and bundled-software sites.
Before uninstalling, confirm which Microsoft account owns the game, whether you need Java, Bedrock, or both, and where important Java worlds and custom profiles are stored. Back up worlds and other valuable .minecraft content. Reinstalling the launcher may replace a damaged launcher installation, but it will not necessarily repair a Store, Xbox, Gaming Services, profile, mod, or game-directory problem.
Mac and Linux: use platform-appropriate checks
Windows Store, Xbox, Gaming Services, and wsreset.exe instructions do not apply to macOS or Linux. Quit the launcher completely, restart the computer, check available storage and OS compatibility, and install the launcher using the platform-specific option on Minecraft’s official download page. If the process is genuinely unresponsive, use the operating system’s system monitor to force-quit it. Test without custom Java arguments or modded profiles, check any security or permission prompt, and back up the .minecraft directory before renaming or changing it.
The official product page lists Java support for macOS 12 or later and Linux 64-bit. Minecraft’s download page offers separate options for Mac and Linux distributions, including Debian-based and Arch-based Linux; use the current download for your platform rather than Windows troubleshooting steps.
Know when the launcher is probably not the cause
- If Microsoft Store or Xbox also cannot sign in, investigate account access, network restrictions, or a service interruption before repeating launcher repairs.
- If several Store apps cannot install or update, focus on Store and Windows recovery.
- If only a modded Java profile fails, isolate its mods and configuration before replacing the launcher.
- If the launcher works but the game freezes after Play, investigate the game, graphics driver, resource packs, mods, or system resources.
- If Windows on ARM or an older Windows installation is involved, check the current edition requirements; compatibility may differ from a standard supported Windows PC.
If the issue persists, contact Minecraft Support with the edition, operating-system version, launcher installation source, exact freeze point, any error code or screenshot, whether Store and Xbox sign-in work, whether an unmodded Java profile works, and the steps already tried. That information helps separate a launcher defect from an account, Windows, network, or game-specific problem.
