The largest established standard game-card capacity for the original Nintendo Switch family is 32 GB. Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite and Switch – OLED Model use this format; Nintendo Switch 2 is a separate platform with different game-card types. And 32 GB is the physical card’s capacity, not a guarantee that the complete game is on it.
Nintendo Switch cartridge capacity at a glance
Nintendo generally calls the physical medium a game card, though “cartridge” is widely used by players. The documented standard capacity range for original Switch game cards is:
- 1 GB
- 2 GB
- 4 GB
- 8 GB
- 16 GB
- 32 GB
The 32 GB figure is the largest established standard tier for original-Switch releases. Nintendo’s consumer technical specifications identify the game-card slot but do not publish a capacity table. The size range is documented in coverage of Nintendo Game Cards and Switchbrew’s technical documentation; contemporary industry reporting also described 32 GB as the upper card tier available to publishers.
Does a 32 GB card hold the entire game?
Not necessarily. Card capacity, a game’s total installation size and the amount of data included on a retail card are different things. A physical release may put the complete base game on the card, include only part of it and require an additional download, or require downloads for other components. The exact arrangement depends on the release.

- Card capacity is the card’s marketed storage class. “32 GB” does not mean exactly 32 GB of game files are available; technical overhead and reserved space affect usable capacity.
- Game size describes the data needed for a game or installation. It does not tell you which card size the publisher selected or how much content is on the card.
- Required downloads can supply missing game data or other content. A download requirement alone does not prove that the complete game exceeds 32 GB: publishers may choose a smaller card for commercial or technical reasons.
- Updates and DLC may be separate from the original card contents, even when the base game is included in full.
For example, contemporary coverage of L.A. Noire reported a substantial download requirement for its physical Switch release. That kind of release reflects a publisher’s distribution decision, not a higher cartridge limit. Industry analysis of Switch card costs describes the trade-off between larger cards and manufacturing expense.
Why do publishers use smaller cards or require downloads?
Higher-capacity cards can cost more to manufacture. A publisher may use a smaller card and provide some content by download, weighing card cost and retail economics against the convenience of having more of the game on the physical medium. Updates, downloadable language packs, DLC or online components can also sit outside the original card contents.

Was there a 64 GB original Switch cartridge?
Contemporary reports said a 64 GB format was planned for the original Switch, but its rollout was delayed. Those reports do not establish 64 GB as a normal, commercially available original-Switch game-card tier. The best-supported answer for the original Switch remains 32 GB as the largest established standard capacity. See the Ars Technica report on the delayed 64 GB cards and Nintendo Life’s contemporaneous coverage.

Original Switch and Switch 2 cards are different
Do not apply a Switch 2 specification to an original Switch. Nintendo identifies the original Switch, Switch Lite and OLED Model as supporting Nintendo Switch game cards. Switch 2 has its own game-card formats, including Game-Key Cards. Nintendo says a Game-Key Card acts as a key to download the game; it does not contain the full game on the card.
| Feature | Original Nintendo Switch family | Nintendo Switch 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Relevant physical format | Nintendo Switch game card | Switch 2 game card; some releases use Game-Key Cards |
| Capacity answer here | 32 GB is the largest established standard capacity | Separate platform specification; no capacity figure is needed to answer the original-Switch question |
| Does the card always contain the full game? | No. Some retail releases require downloads. | No for Game-Key Cards; Nintendo says the game must be downloaded. |
Nintendo’s Game-Key Card explanation describes the download process. Its game-card compatibility guidance distinguishes the systems; Switch 2-exclusive game cards are not for use in the original Switch.

Does a microSD card increase cartridge capacity?
No. A microSD card expands the console’s storage; it does not change what fits on a physical game card. On the original Switch, compatible microSD storage can hold downloaded games, updates, DLC and screenshots or video captures. Nintendo lists support for microSD, microSDHC and microSDXC cards, with microSDXC capacity up to 2 TB. Nintendo’s microSD support page also states that save data is stored in system memory and cannot be copied to a microSD card.

- Confirm the platform and edition. Check whether the product is for the original Switch family, Switch 2, or a Switch 2 Edition; card compatibility differs.
- Look for a download notice. Check the box and the retailer or publisher’s listing for “download required” or similar wording.
- Check the required storage and internet access. Find out how much free space is needed and whether an internet connection is needed for the initial download.
- Check the region and included content. Regional editions may differ, and a physical package may include a download code or omit DLC and other extras.
- Consider future access. If part of the game must be downloaded, the physical card alone may not contain everything needed for that release. Verify what is available in your region and what the publisher says is required.
Nintendo’s game-card troubleshooting and compatibility guidance can help if an original-Switch card is not recognized. For extra space on that system, use a compatible microSD card; Nintendo also lists licensed SanDisk microSDXC cards.
