Do not pay again until you know which kind of pending status you have. Check Steam’s Account Details → View purchase history and your receipt email first. If Steam says the purchase failed while your bank shows a pending card entry, that may be a temporary authorization hold—not proof that Steam completed the order.
Identify what is pending
“Pending” can describe different problems, and the fix depends on where you see it. A bank notification by itself does not establish that Steam received payment or granted the item.

Steam says a game may be available temporarily while card authorization is processed; if the payment is declined, Steam may remove it from the Library and ask you to make a valid purchase. A pending trade offer is separate from a Store order; Steam’s instructions for canceling sent offers are at Steam Trade Offers.
Check the order before troubleshooting
- Stop submitting the checkout again while the first attempt is unresolved.
- In Steam, select your account name in the upper-right, choose Account Details, then View purchase history. Steam identifies purchase history as the place to review Store purchases; labels can vary slightly between the client and website. See Steam’s purchase and refund guidance.
- Check the email address associated with Steam for a receipt or failed-purchase message.
- Check whether the item arrived: look in the Library and the game’s store page for a game or DLC, your Wallet balance for funds, or the game’s inventory/account for an in-game item.
- Record the exact error text, date, item, payment method, and whether the bank entry is pending, posted, reversed, or declined.
A completed Steam order in purchase history is stronger evidence of a purchase than a bank alert. If the order is completed, do not start a second checkout to solve missing content.

If Steam itself still shows a pending purchase
Use Steam’s purchase-pending Support route. If it does not open the relevant order, sign in to Steam Support and choose the purchase or category. The wizard may require sign-in and can display a generic error during navigation; you can also open Recent purchases or Purchase not completed.
Steam’s wizard covers categories such as games and software, Wallet funds, in-game purchases, and Community Market items. Follow the instructions shown for your account rather than assuming every pending order can be canceled the same way. Do not repeatedly click Buy or switch payment methods while the first transaction may still be processing.
What to send Support
Include the Steam account, purchase date, item name, exact error, payment method, and the bank’s status for the transaction. Attach a screenshot of the Steam error with sensitive details hidden, plus a receipt or order confirmation if available. For payment identification, provide only the last four card digits—never the full card number or security code. Steam’s unauthorized-charge form also requests transaction details such as payment type, exact date, amount, and last four digits.
If Steam says the purchase failed but the bank shows pending
A pending bank authorization is not necessarily a completed charge. For the card-decline flow Steam documents—including an address-verification failure—it says it will not collect the funds for the failed transaction. The bank or card issuer controls when the hold is released, and Steam cannot make a failed payment succeed just because the bank still displays it as pending. - Confirm that purchase history does not show a completed order.
- If Steam says the order failed, do not treat the pending bank entry as proof that you own the item.
- Ask your bank or payment provider about a hold that remains unusually long or changes to a posted charge.
- If the bank says the charge completed but Steam has no purchase, contact Steam Support with the transaction details before paying again.
Steam does not give one universal release deadline for these holds; timing depends on the bank or payment provider. A canceled transaction may not produce a separate credit entry. Steam’s refund guidance says a bank can take up to 30 days to confirm it never received the funds and release a hold in the cancellation context; that is not a universal deadline for every pending authorization.
Fix an incorrect billing-address or AVS decline
If Steam reports that the card was declined because of an incorrect address, enter the billing street address and ZIP code exactly as the card issuer has them on file. A shipping address, or a recently changed address not yet updated with the issuer, may not match. If the information is correct and Steam still reports the error, contact the bank or card issuer.
Steam says a declined purchase in this specific flow may be followed by an email retry link that preserves the sale price for up to 72 hours. This applies to that documented failed-purchase email flow, not every pending Steam transaction. Do not use a retry link until you have confirmed that the original order failed.
When another payment method is reasonable
Consider another method only after Steam clearly shows that the original attempt failed and purchase history has no completed order. Depending on the purchase and your region, checkout may offer another card, PayPal, or Steam Wallet funds. Steam says available methods vary by region and are shown during checkout; a method that works for one account or purchase may not be offered for another. If the first order is genuinely still processing, changing methods risks creating another attempt before the first one is resolved.

A legitimate Steam Wallet code or digital gift card may be another option where available, but check that it is compatible with your account’s currency or region and retain the code and receipt. Steam says retail activation of Wallet codes can take several hours. Its Wallet guidance also says physical retail Steam Gift Cards are being phased out, with retailers expected to run out by the end of 2026; existing cards remain redeemable subject to local law. Wallet funds, currency, and missing content
Wallet purchase completed, balance missing
Confirm the receipt and that you are signed into the account that made the purchase, then restart the Steam Client. Steam says to contact Support if the Wallet balance is still wrong after more than two hours. This advice applies to purchased Wallet funds that have not appeared; restarting is not a way to release a bank hold or repair a declined checkout.
Wallet balance does not cover the purchase
Steam requires another payment method for the remaining balance. Which methods appear depends on your region and transaction.
Wallet currency differs from the purchase currency
Use Steam’s specific Wallet currency-mismatch guidance. Do not try to fix a payment problem by using a VPN or changing your store country.

Wallet code has not activated
Retail activation may take several hours. Keep the code and receipt, then contact the retailer or Steam Support as appropriate.
Purchase completed, but a game, DLC, or in-game item is missing
Confirm that you are in the account that bought it, restart Steam, and check the item’s expected location: the Library, the game’s DLC management, or the game’s inventory/account. If purchase history confirms completion and the item remains missing, use a purchase-specific Support request instead of retrying payment.

Steam can temporarily grant access while card authorization is pending. If the issuer later declines the payment, Steam may remove the game and ask for a valid purchase. Check purchase history and whether the first payment was reversed, remains pending, or posted. If the bank says it posted but Steam shows no order, contact Steam Support before paying again. When a refund or cancellation applies
A pending authorization is not automatically a refund case. First establish whether Steam completed an order: a failed authorization is handled through the payment provider’s release process, while a refund concerns a completed purchase.

For games, Steam’s standard refund rule is a request within 14 days of purchase and under two hours of playtime; Steam may review exceptions, but eligibility outside the standard rule is not guaranteed. Approved Wallet refunds may take 24–48 hours to appear; other approved refunds can take up to seven days, and international payment methods may take longer. These refund timings are not a promise about how quickly a pending card authorization will disappear. Details are in Steam’s refund policy.
If the charge was not yours
Stop retrying payment, secure your Steam account and associated email account, and contact your payment provider promptly. Open Steam’s unauthorized-charge Support form and provide the transaction details it requests. Never send a password, Steam Guard code, full card number, or CVV in a support ticket or to someone claiming to be Steam Support.
Choose the right place to escalate

For a generic “unexpected error” during checkout, Steam has a separate purchase-error help page. It does not change the need to check purchase history and payment status before trying again.
