10 Gaming Tech Essentials: What to Buy for PC, Console, and Handheld

A platform-aware guide to ten gaming tech categories, with advice on what to buy first, what to check for compatibility, and what most players can skip.

There is no ten-item kit every gamer needs. The useful essentials are ten categories: some improve almost any setup, while others matter only for a particular platform or activity. Start with your biggest problem—image quality, controls, storage, online reliability, or voice chat—and buy for that bottleneck rather than the most impressive spec sheet.

This guide covers PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and handheld gaming. Use the quick guide to find the categories that fit, then check compatibility before buying: a console expansion card, wireless headset, or high-refresh display is not automatically interchangeable across platforms.

Which gaming tech should you buy first?

“Must-have” is a test, not a shopping list. Consider how often you will use an item, whether it improves performance, comfort, immersion, or reliability, whether it works with your platform, and whether that improvement justifies the cost over a basic alternative. A webcam is important for a streamer but unnecessary for someone who never appears on camera; a gaming mouse is central to many PC setups but optional for console play.

Current problem First category to consider
Blurry or sluggish image Monitor or television
Uncomfortable aiming or missed shots Mouse and mouse surface, for PC gaming
Hand fatigue or an awkward key feel Keyboard, for PC gaming
Poor team communication Headset or microphone
Stick drift or awkward controls Controller
Frequently uninstalling games Compatible storage
Lag spikes or disconnects Connection diagnosis, then Ethernet or improved Wi-Fi coverage
Poor stream picture Lighting first, then microphone or webcam as needed
Dead batteries or desk clutter Charging, USB expansion, and cable-management equipment
Short power outages A suitable UPS and surge protection

Match the gear to the platform

  • PC: Offers the broadest choice of displays, mice, keyboards, USB microphones, and internal NVMe SSDs. Check operating-system and game support for device software and features.
  • PlayStation 5: Match the display to the resolution and refresh mode you want, confirm an SSD meets Sony’s requirements, and check whether a controller or headset feature works on PS5 specifically.
  • Xbox Series X|S: Check that controllers and headsets explicitly support Xbox. Games that require the console’s internal SSD architecture need compatible expansion storage, not just any external drive.
  • Handhelds: A compatible USB-C hub or dock, suitable charger, microSD card where supported, and compact audio can be more useful than desktop peripherals. Confirm power delivery and display-output support for the specific device.

1. A monitor or television that suits your system

The display affects clarity, motion, responsiveness, viewing comfort, and whether your device can use its output capabilities. Buy for the games and hardware you have: a 240Hz screen cannot deliver its full benefit if the system cannot produce suitably high frame rates.

Razer BlackShark V2 X Xbox Gaming Headset, 3.5mm Audio Jack, Black
  • TRIFORCE TITANIUM 50 MM DRIVERS — Our cutting-edge proprietary design divides the driver into 3 parts for the individual tuning of highs, mids, and lows—producing brighter, clearer audio with richer highs and more powerful lows
  • HYPERCLEAR CARDIOID MIC — An improved pickup pattern ensures more voice and less noise as it tapers off towards the mic’s back and sides, with the sweet spot easily placed at the mouth because of the mic’s bendable design
  • ADVANCED PASSIVE NOISE CANCELLATION — Sturdy closed earcups fully cover the ears to prevent noise from leaking into the headset, with its cushions providing a closer seal for more sound isolation
  • LIGHTWEIGHT DESIGN WITH MEMORY FOAM EAR CUSHIONS — At just 240 g, the headset features thicker headband padding and memory foam ear cushions with leatherette to keep gaming in peak form during grueling tournaments and training sessions
  • WORKS WITH WINDOWS SONIC — Make the most of the headset’s powerful drivers by pairing it with lifelike surround sound that places audio with pinpoint accuracy, heightening in-game awareness and immersion

What to check

  • Resolution and refresh rate: 1080p or 1440p can be a sensible PC choice when smooth frame rates matter; 4K suits systems and games that can make use of the extra detail. Refresh rates such as 120Hz, 144Hz, 165Hz, or 240Hz are useful only when the source can output them.
  • Variable refresh rate: Check that the display’s VRR mode works with your graphics card or console. FreeSync, G-SYNC Compatible, and console-supported VRR are not interchangeable promises for every connection and mode.
  • Connectivity: HDMI 2.1 is relevant to many 4K/120Hz console setups, while DisplayPort is common on PC. A port label alone does not guarantee every resolution and refresh-rate combination; confirm the display’s supported modes.
  • Panel and motion: IPS, VA, OLED, and QD-OLED have different image characteristics. Treat advertised response-time figures as manufacturer claims, not proof of measured input lag or consistently clean motion.
  • Fit and comfort: Consider viewing distance, glare, height adjustment, and VESA mounting. A good 4K television can be a better fit than a desktop monitor for couch gaming.

Choose a tier, not a headline spec

  • Budget PC: Consider 1080p at 144Hz or a suitably priced 1440p display.
  • Mainstream PC: A 1440p display in the 165–240Hz range can balance detail and motion, if the PC can drive it.
  • Premium PC: 4K/240Hz OLED is a specialist option for a powerful PC, not a default upgrade.
  • PS5 or Xbox: For a premium setup, look for 4K/120Hz support over HDMI 2.1 if you want those modes and the game supports them.

OLED can deliver strong contrast and motion clarity, but consider brightness behavior, static-image exposure, panel-care features, and the actual warranty terms. High refresh rates matter most in competitive games and fast motion; they are not equally valuable to every player. ASUS’s U.S. store has listed a 27-inch 1440p OLED monitor at 240Hz, with a manufacturer-advertised 0.03ms response time, at $499 reduced from $599. That is a sale-sensitive example, not a lasting price or an independent performance test: ASUS U.S. store.

2. A mouse that fits your hand and games

For PC players, the mouse is a consequential control device. Shape, weight, button placement, sensor consistency, and surface friction tend to matter more than extreme DPI numbers or decorative lighting.

Choose for fit and use

  • Try to match size and shape to your hand and grip; a mouse that is too large or small can be uncomfortable and hard to control.
  • Lightweight models can suit fast shooter play but may give up extra buttons or battery capacity. Ergonomic shapes work for some hands but can exclude left-handed users or particular grip styles.
  • Wireless can reduce desk clutter; a dedicated 2.4GHz receiver is different from Bluetooth. Check receiver placement, battery life, charging connector, and whether the device needs software or supports onboard settings.
  • Wired models avoid charging and usually cost less. Check cable flexibility and the side-button layout if those features matter to your games.

DPI is a sensitivity setting, not a quality score. Do not assume a console game supports mouse input just because the console has a USB port; support depends on the game and device.

3. A keyboard for PC play and everyday comfort

A keyboard changes typing feel, noise, layout, and comfort. It is a central PC peripheral, but most console players do not need a gaming keyboard.

  • 【Wide Compatibility with Gaming Devices】Setup the perfect entertainment system by plugging in 2.4G USB. The convenience of dual USB work seamlessly with your PS5,PS4, PC, Mac, Laptop, Switch and saves you from swapping cables.

Decisions worth making

  • Switch feel: Mechanical, optical, and membrane designs feel and sound different. Linear switches move smoothly; tactile switches have a bump; clicky switches make an audible click that may bother people nearby or be picked up by a microphone.
  • Layout: Full-size includes a number pad; tenkeyless removes it; 75% and smaller layouts save more desk space but may omit navigation keys or other controls.
  • Features: Hot-swap sockets, media controls, adjustable actuation, and rapid-trigger behavior can be useful to some players. Competitive actuation features are specialized tools, not a shortcut to better play.
  • Connection and support: Wireless reduces cables but needs charging. Check the operating system, software requirements, and whether settings can be saved onboard if you do not want background software.

Premium enthusiast boards can improve typing feel without materially changing game performance. Pay for a layout and feel you will enjoy, not features you will not use.

4. A headset or audio setup for your space

Audio can aid directional awareness, immersion, and communication. A headset is often practical in a shared home; speakers or existing headphones may be better for someone who does not need a built-in mic.

Compare the trade-offs

  • Comfort, clamp force, weight, replaceable ear pads, and microphone monitoring matter during long sessions.
  • Closed-back designs limit sound leakage; open-back headphones can sound more spacious but leak audio and let in room noise.
  • Wired avoids battery management. A dedicated 2.4GHz wireless link is not the same as Bluetooth, which can have latency or microphone-quality limitations depending on the device.
  • Check platform compatibility and connection method, as well as sidetone, battery life, and whether spatial-audio features are supported by the platform and game.

“Surround” or “7.1” branding does not replace good tuning, comfort, and compatibility. Xbox’s accessories catalog has listed the Razer BlackShark V2 X for Xbox at $39.99, SteelSeries Arctis Nova 3 X Wireless at $109.99, and Xbox Wireless Headset at $119.99. PlayStation’s U.S. site has listed PULSE Elite from $149 and PULSE Explore from $199. These are U.S. official-site price signals, not current guaranteed prices or universal recommendations: Xbox accessories and PlayStation U.S..

5. A voice-chat solution—or a dedicated microphone

For ordinary team chat, a decent headset boom mic is enough for most players. A separate microphone makes more sense for streaming, podcasts, frequent community calls, or a voice setup where the headset mic is the weak link.

Keep the simple setup simple

Choose a headset with a clear boom microphone or a plug-and-play USB mic if you need better team chat. Place the mic close enough to your mouth and use mute controls you can reach. Start here before buying a mixer or studio accessories.

Build a creator setup only when needed

A USB dynamic microphone, boom arm, and windscreen can be a manageable starting point. Add headphone monitoring if useful. An XLR microphone also requires an audio interface or mixer, which adds cost and setup. Dynamic microphones can help reject room noise, but mic placement and the room still matter.

Condenser mics can pick up keyboard clatter, fans, and room reflections when positioned poorly. Higher recording resolution does not guarantee a better-sounding voice. Choose the microphone type, mount, and connection for your actual room and workflow.

6. A controller for games that suit sticks and triggers

A controller is useful even on PC for racing, platform, sports, fighting, and couch games. Choose for the platform and the way you play, not just the premium tier.

  • Game for Hours in Comfort. Everything about these headphones is about comfort: The deluxe lightweight leatherette ear cups and headband are made to keep pressure off your ears. Ear cups rotate up to 90 degrees for convenience.

Compatibility and features

  • Confirm platform licensing, wireless protocol, wired fallback, and whether advanced features work on your system. PlayStation says DualSense connects over USB-C and Bluetooth to Windows PC, Mac, Android, and iOS, but haptic feedback and adaptive triggers vary by game and platform: DualSense wireless controller.
  • Back buttons, trigger stops, replaceable parts, and extra customization can help particular players. A more expensive controller is not automatically a better value for casual play.
  • Hall-effect sticks can reduce the traditional potentiometer drift risk, but do not make a controller immune to defects or other wear.
  • Battery preferences differ: built-in rechargeable batteries avoid disposable cells, while replaceable batteries can be swapped quickly. Check repairability, warranty, and replacement-part availability.

Xbox has listed its standard Wireless Controller from $64.99 for selected colors, Elite Series 2 at $199.99, and Elite Series 2 Core around $139.99–$149.99 depending on version. PlayStation has listed DualSense from $74 and DualSense Edge from $199. These are date-sensitive U.S. official-site prices: Xbox accessories and PlayStation accessories. PlayStation’s Access controller is another legitimate option: it is a customizable PS5 controller kit designed to support players with disabilities, not a niche novelty: PlayStation accessories.

7. Storage sized for your platform

Running short on space can mean repeatedly uninstalling games. On PC, a compatible NVMe SSD is a flexible way to add storage; console expansion rules differ, so check the manufacturer’s current requirements before ordering.

PC storage

Use an NVMe SSD for the operating system and games you play often. For a new PC build, 1TB is a practical starting point; 2TB can be easier to live with if the budget allows. Before adding a drive, check the motherboard’s M.2 support, PCIe generation, heatsink clearance, and whether the slot shares lanes with other ports. A faster sequential-speed rating does not guarantee proportionally faster game loading. WD_BLACK describes its SN850X as a gaming NVMe SSD with Game Mode 2.0 controlled through its Windows dashboard software: WD_BLACK SN850X product documentation.

Console storage

  • PS5: Internal expansion drives must meet Sony’s performance and physical-clearance requirements. Sony’s accessories page states that PS5 internal storage can be expanded by up to 8TB with an officially licensed Western Digital SN850P SSD; confirm current compatibility and installation requirements before purchase: PlayStation accessories.
  • Xbox Series X|S: Games requiring the console’s internal SSD architecture need compatible expansion cards. An ordinary USB external drive may store games but cannot run every current-generation title directly. Xbox’s catalog has listed a 4TB Seagate Storage Expansion Card at $549.99 and a WD_BLACK C50 at $179.99—platform-specific products, not generic external-drive prices: Xbox accessories.

Do not buy a Gen5 SSD for a system that cannot use its performance, ignore cooling, or assume every expansion drive works with every console. Compatibility can depend on the exact model and platform requirements.

8. A reliable network before a “gaming router”

For online play, stable latency and low packet loss usually matter more than headline download speed. Diagnose the connection before spending on specialist networking gear.

  1. Try Ethernet: If practical, connect the console or PC directly to the router. It is often the simplest way to remove local Wi-Fi interference.
  2. Check coverage: If signal is weak in the gaming room, improve router placement or consider a wired access point or mesh system. Wireless mesh backhaul may reduce performance compared with a wired link.
  3. Look for congestion: Test whether lag spikes coincide with heavy downloads or uploads on the home network. Traffic-management features may help some setups, but configuration and router performance vary.
  4. Contact the ISP when indicated: A new router cannot fix poor ISP latency, neighborhood congestion, a distant game server, failing modem, or bad cabling.

Powerline adapters depend heavily on building wiring. A gaming VPN can help only in unusual routing cases and can also increase latency. Check Wi-Fi client compatibility, Ethernet ports, firmware support, and ISP modem requirements before replacing equipment.

9. Webcam and lighting for creators and video calls

A camera is useful for streamers, remote players, and video-call users, but it is not a universal gaming essential. If the picture looks poor, lighting and camera placement may matter more than moving from an inexpensive 1080p webcam to an expensive 4K model.

  • Place a diffused key light slightly above eye level; avoid a harsh bare bulb aimed at your face.
  • Check autofocus, low-light performance, field of view, frame rate, mounting options, and whether the camera works with your streaming software.
  • Keep the background from competing with your face, and use a privacy shutter or cover when the camera is off.
  • Remember that upload quality and encoding settings also affect a stream; a webcam upgrade cannot repair those bottlenecks.

10. Power, charging, USB expansion, and cable management

Power and connection problems can interrupt play and make maintenance harder. Treat this category as reliability and safety equipment, not just desk decoration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Power: Use a properly rated, grounded surge-protected power strip. A UPS can keep a desktop PC or networking equipment running through short outages, but is not a substitute for surge protection unless its specifications explicitly include the required protection.
  • Charging: Keep a suitable USB-C cable or controller dock at hand. Check device requirements rather than assuming every USB-C cable supports high-wattage charging, fast data, or video.
  • Expansion: A powered USB hub can help when the PC or dock lacks ports; confirm that it supplies enough power for connected devices.
  • Organization: Cable labels, clips, and an under-desk tray make it easier to trace connections and replace equipment.

Do not overload a power strip or connect a high-power gaming PC to an unsuitable extension setup. Check the ratings of cords, chargers, and hubs for the devices they must support.

Build a setup around your budget

These ranges are spending guides, not a promise that every listed category can be bought at a particular price. Prioritize the item that solves the most disruptive problem.

Available budget Reasonable priorities Hold off on
Under $250 Consider a 1080p/144Hz monitor or a good 1440p sale model, a wired mouse, an entry-level mechanical keyboard, or a wired headset. Add a controller only if your games call for one. Premium router, decorative accessories, and a full set of premium peripherals.
$250–$600 A 1440p high-refresh display, midrange wireless mouse, mechanical keyboard, capable headset, or 1TB–2TB SSD; add basic lighting or a microphone if you create content. Paying for several upgrades that do not address an actual bottleneck.
$600 and above Consider an OLED display, premium input devices, a dedicated microphone, compatible console storage, a network upgrade, UPS, or streaming equipment. Buying every premium category without checking platform fit and diminishing returns.

What should you buy first for your kind of gaming?

  • Competitive PC player: Start with a display suited to the GPU and games, then a mouse that fits your hand. Consider keyboard features only if they address a specific control preference.
  • Living-room console player: Prioritize a comfortable viewing setup, compatible audio, and a controller that fits your games. Check display modes and console storage rules before buying.
  • New PC gamer: Cover the basics that affect every session—display, mouse, keyboard, and audio—then expand storage when capacity becomes a problem.
  • Streamer: Improve lighting and voice quality before assuming an expensive webcam is the answer. Add a camera only if you want to appear on screen.
  • Handheld gamer: Verify dock, USB-C power delivery, display output, microSD support, and charger capacity for the device you own.
  • Shared household: Comfortable closed-back audio and quieter keyboard switches can reduce disruption. Use a mic that does not require a loud voice to be heard clearly.
  • Strict budget: Fix a real bottleneck first. A stable Ethernet connection, suitable headset, or extra storage can improve daily use more than decorative lighting.

What most gamers can skip

  • Gaming router: Skip it unless diagnosis points to a local coverage or traffic-management problem a new router can solve.
  • Webcam or dedicated microphone: Skip either if you do not stream or use video calls, or if your current headset already handles chat well.
  • Premium controller: Extra paddles and tuning are valuable only if you use them enough to justify the higher replacement cost.
  • OLED or maximum-refresh display: These are upgrades, not requirements. Match the price and capabilities to the source system, games, room, and viewing distance.
  • RGB, second monitor, or branded accessory: Buy for a practical use or personal preference, not because a setup is incomplete without it.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
