Upgrade Your Gaming Setup: 10 Essentials to Prioritize

A practical, platform-aware guide to the ten gaming setup categories worth considering—and how to choose the upgrade that solves your biggest problem.

There is no single must-have gaming setup: a PC player, a console player on a couch, and a streamer need different gear. Treat “essential” as a category that solves a real problem, not a requirement to buy a premium product. Start with the biggest limitation: for many PC players that is the display or mouse control; for console players, the screen, controller, audio, and network usually come first. Comfort, power protection, and organization matter too, but they do not all need to be upgraded at once.

What should you upgrade first?

Choose the upgrade that addresses the problem you notice most. A new accessory will not fix a bottleneck elsewhere: a faster monitor cannot stabilize a poor connection, and an expensive chair cannot correct a desk that forces you to hunch.

What you notice Start with
Blurry, slow, or unpleasant image Display settings, then a monitor or TV that fits your system
Inconsistent aiming or frequent mouse resets Mouse fit, sensitivity, and mousepad size
Typing or hand discomfort Keyboard layout, mouse fit, and desk height
Back, neck, wrist, or shoulder discomfort Chair and desk adjustment, screen position, and peripheral placement
Poor team communication Headset or microphone position and mute controls
Lag, packet loss, or disconnects Connection type, Wi-Fi placement, and network conditions
Clutter or too little usable space Cable routing, storage, or a compatible monitor arm
Dark or reflective surroundings Diffuse room lighting and glare control

Fix the largest limitation before choosing gear for appearance. For help arranging a workstation, see ASUS’s ergonomic workstation guidance and Logitech’s workstation setup guide.

The 10 gaming setup essentials

1. A display that matches your system

A monitor or TV shapes image clarity, motion, and viewing comfort. Match resolution and refresh rate to what your PC or console can actually output in the games you play. A high refresh rate is most useful when the system can deliver suitably high frame rates; a high-resolution screen is a poor value if it forces compromises you do not want.

  • Desktop Power Strip with USB Ports: This edge mount power strip features a clamps to easily mount to desks, tabletops and more for secure desk organization and tidy workspace.
  • IPS: a balanced choice for color, viewing angles, and motion, though results vary by model.
  • OLED: strong contrast and fast response, but check the manufacturer’s burn-in coverage and panel-care guidance before buying.
  • VA: often offers strong contrast; motion behavior differs across models.

Do not rely on a manufacturer’s advertised “1 ms” response figure alone. Review real model-specific testing if response behavior is a priority. Check adaptive-sync compatibility with your graphics card or console, screen size, stand adjustment, and the viewing distance your desk or seating permits. A very large or ultrawide display may need more space and graphics performance. For monitor placement, ASUS advises setting the screen around arm’s length away with its top at or slightly below eye level; BenQ’s setup guidance also discusses viewing position and glare.

Best fit: PC players whose current display limits motion or clarity, and console players whose TV lacks the capabilities they want. A 240Hz monitor is difficult to justify if the system rarely approaches that frame rate.

2. A keyboard or controller that fits your play

Choose the input device you actually use. PC players can compare full-size, tenkeyless, 75%, and compact keyboard layouts; console players should prioritize a comfortable, compatible controller. Switch feel—linear, tactile, or clicky—is personal, and mechanical construction alone does not guarantee faster input.

  • Check layout, key rollover, and whether you need a number pad or navigation keys.
  • Consider wired or wireless connection, charging needs, and platform compatibility.
  • For controllers, consider weight, stick and trigger feel, battery or charging arrangements, and whether remappable or back buttons help in your games.
  • Programmable keys are useful when they serve a real game or accessibility need, not simply because they are available.

Compact keyboards create mouse room but remove keys; clicky switches may disturb others. Wireless options reduce cable clutter but require charging. BenQ’s peripheral selection guide covers programmable controls and compact designs; treat those as options, not requirements.

3. A mouse suited to your hand and games

Shape, weight, balance, button placement, and reliable tracking matter more than a headline DPI maximum. Try to match the mouse to your hand size and grip, and check whether an ergonomic shape is right-handed only. Set sensitivity to a controllable level; a very high DPI number does not make an ill-fitting mouse easier to aim with.

Wired models avoid charging; wireless models offer more freedom but add battery and receiver-placement considerations. A 2.4GHz receiver is commonly the relevant wireless option for gaming, while Bluetooth may be more convenient for general use. Avoid assuming one connection is always faster: performance depends on the specific device and mode. Extra buttons may help in MMOs, but can obstruct a clean FPS grip. BenQ lists adjustable DPI, shape, and programmable controls among selection criteria in its gaming setup guide.

4. A mousepad or suitable control surface

A consistent surface gives the mouse room to track and reduces the chance of hitting the desk during a swipe. Low-sensitivity FPS players often benefit more from a larger pad than from replacing an adequate mouse.

  • Large or extended pad: useful for broad movement and for keeping the keyboard on the same surface.
  • Control surface: offers more friction and stopping feel.
  • Speed surface: offers less friction and a quicker glide.
  • Cloth or hard surface: cloth is comfortable and portable; hard pads wipe clean easily but can be noisier and less forgiving.

Look for a non-slip base, durable edges, manageable cleaning, and enough coverage for your sensitivity. A small pad can force repeated lifting and resetting. HP includes a mousepad among core gaming peripherals in its gaming accessories guide; IKEA also recommends an oversized pad for movement and desk organization in its gaming desk organization ideas.

5. Audio for play and communication

A headset combines game audio and team chat, but it is not the only option. Choose for comfort, microphone clarity, platform compatibility, and controls you will use—not a “surround sound” label alone.

  • Headset: practical for chat and shared spaces; check clamping force, mute control, and game/chat mixing support.
  • Speakers: work well for casual solo play or a room where sound can be shared.
  • Open-back headphones: may feel spacious, but leak sound and isolate less.
  • Dedicated microphone: useful for frequent streaming or calls, but takes desk space and may pick up keyboard or room noise.
  • Earbuds: portable, but fit and mic quality vary.

Wireless audio adds charging; noise cancellation and processing can change the sound. Comfort over a full session is more useful than a premium feature you dislike. HP identifies a headset as a core peripheral for directional audio and communication in its accessories guide.

6. A stable, correctly sized desk

A desk needs enough depth for comfortable screen placement, enough width for the gear you use, and legroom that lets you sit naturally. Stability matters if you use a monitor arm or make broad mouse movements. Check height, weight capacity, clamp clearance, cable routing, and power access before buying.

A sit-stand desk is useful if you will adjust positions, but it costs more and is not a substitute for changing posture. L-shaped desks provide surface area but can complicate screen placement; shallow desks push screens too close. A “gaming” label does not make a desk inherently stronger or more ergonomic than an office desk. IKEA’s gaming desk setup guidance covers depth and cable management, and its U.S. gaming desk catalog shows available desk categories, not a universal recommendation.

7. A chair that fits your body and desk

Prioritize fit and adjustments over racing-seat styling. Useful features include seat-height adjustment, backrest tilt, lumbar support, appropriate seat depth, and armrests that place your arms comfortably. Breathability and floor-suitable casters matter in a warm room or on a particular surface. Try the chair when possible, or check its return policy; fit is personal.

Racing-style chairs may restrict movement or fit poorly. Office chairs can offer more adjustment with less gaming styling; mesh may ventilate well but feel firmer. A headrest is useful for some people and unnecessary for others. ASUS’s workstation advice says to adjust chair height so feet are supported, knees are near a right angle, and thighs roughly parallel to the floor. IKEA’s U.S. gaming chair catalog includes varied designs, but appearance alone does not establish fit.

8. A reliable network connection

For online play, stable latency and low packet loss matter more than a large download-speed figure. Ethernet is a sensible first choice where practical. On Wi-Fi, improve access-point placement and reduce avoidable obstructions before buying a new router. A gaming router or faster internet plan cannot guarantee lower ping: server distance, ISP routing, congestion, and local wireless conditions also contribute.

Diagnose latency, packet loss, and bufferbloat as separate problems. Mesh Wi-Fi can help coverage in a large home, though wireless backhaul may affect performance; powerline adapters depend on the building’s wiring. A VPN may help a specific routing problem but can also add latency. HP includes reliable internet in its complete setup overview.

9. Surge protection or a UPS

This is a risk-management choice, not a requirement for every player. Use a genuine surge protector rather than assuming a basic power strip offers protection. The level of protection depends on the product, electrical event, installation, and condition of the device; check its specifications and replacement guidance.

A UPS adds battery backup so a desktop system can have time for a save and orderly shutdown during an outage. Size it for the actual connected load, reserve battery-backed outlets for necessary equipment, and follow the PC power-supply or UPS manufacturer’s advice about output type. A UPS has runtime limits, takes space, and eventually needs battery replacement. Do not overload it or plug it into another UPS. A surge protector may be enough for a casual console setup; frequent outages or a desktop PC make battery backup more relevant.

10. Functional lighting and cable management

Ambient lighting can make a screen less stark against a dark room, while organized cables improve access and reduce tangles. Use diffuse light, keep it out of the screen’s reflection path, and adjust brightness to the room. A monitor light bar can save desk space; an RGB strip adds atmosphere, but neither automatically fixes glare or discomfort. BenQ’s lighting guidance discusses front illumination and rear glow; its product-specific claims should be considered in that context, not as medical evidence.

For cable routing, use a tray, clips, or reusable ties, leaving slack for monitor and chair movement. Label connections in complex setups and keep drinks away from electronics. A monitor arm can free space, but first verify VESA pattern, display weight, desk thickness, and clamp clearance. IKEA lists organization accessories in its desk organization guide.

Priorities by platform and use

PC gaming

  • Match monitor refresh rate and resolution to the PC’s output and your games.
  • Fit mouse, keyboard, and pad to your hands, genre, and available desk space.
  • Leave enough desk depth and route cables around the PC’s ventilation.

Console gaming

  • Check the TV or monitor’s game mode, response behavior, and supported refresh capabilities.
  • Choose a comfortable compatible controller and a practical charging or battery plan.
  • Prioritize audio, network stability, viewing distance, and seating; do not buy PC peripherals you will not use.

Laptop gaming

  • Use a hard, ventilated surface; do not block the laptop’s vents with bedding or other soft material.
  • Add an external monitor only if the laptop can drive it through the required display standard.
  • Consider an external keyboard, mouse, and hub or dock after checking the ports and display support you need.

Streaming and content creation

Add a webcam, dedicated microphone or interface, lighting, and capture hardware only if your platform and workflow require them. A camera alone may not improve the result much without good framing and light. People who only play games do not need a webcam, capture card, or studio microphone.

Set up the workstation before buying more gear

  1. Adjust the chair until your feet are supported, knees are near a right angle, and thighs are roughly parallel to the floor.
  2. Set desk and chair height so shoulders stay relaxed and elbows sit near desk height.
  3. Place the main display directly in front of you, about an arm’s length away, with its top at or slightly below eye level.
  4. Bring keyboard and mouse close enough that your elbows do not reach forward; keep wrists reasonably straight and aligned with your forearms.
  5. For multiple screens, center the main one on your body and position the others to avoid repeated awkward turns.
  6. Check the position again after several sessions and adjust for comfort rather than treating one measurement as universal.

This sequence reflects the positioning advice in ASUS’s workstation guide and Logitech’s ergonomic setup guidance. These adjustments support comfort; they do not guarantee that discomfort or injury will be prevented.

Build the setup in stages

Budget bands are approximate planning ranges, not current market averages or guarantees of what a component costs. Prices and selection vary by region, model, and date.

Approximate spend Useful focus
Under $50 Mousepad, cable clips or ties, monitor riser or laptop stand, basic lamp, or headset hook—whichever addresses a real limitation
$50–$150 Mouse, entry-level headset, keyboard, more capable surge protector, or monitor stand
$150–$400 Display, chair, stable desk, wireless peripherals, or entry-level UPS; compare the option that fixes your main bottleneck
$400 and above High-refresh or high-resolution display, premium chair, sit-stand desk, specialized audio or creator gear, or multi-monitor mounting

Do not spend through a band just because it exists. If the current monitor, controller, or chair already works well, put the money toward a problem you can identify—or keep it.

Common setup mistakes to avoid

  • Buying refresh rate, DPI, programmable-button counts, or RGB effects without a use case.
  • Choosing a mouse by DPI alone instead of fit, tracking, and control.
  • Assuming mechanical keyboards are automatically faster, or that wireless gear is always equal to wired.
  • Buying a gaming chair for its appearance without checking adjustments, comfort, and fit.
  • Expecting a new router or faster internet plan to fix every ping problem.
  • Choosing a desk by width while overlooking depth, legroom, or monitor-arm compatibility.
  • Putting a laptop on a soft surface that blocks ventilation.
  • Choosing an OLED screen without reviewing its maker’s burn-in policy and care guidance.
  • Adding a camera without considering lighting and framing, or buying streaming equipment for ordinary gameplay.
  • Using clicky switches, open-back headphones, speakers, or bright lighting without considering roommates and shared spaces.
