For higher FPS and steadier gameplay, do not begin with registry tweaks. Measure a repeatable baseline, identify whether the GPU, CPU, memory, storage or thermals are limiting you, then change one setting at a time and retest. The best configuration is the one that meets your target for frame rate, latency, image quality, temperature and noise—not necessarily the one with the highest short benchmark score.

This guide covers Windows 10 and 11 desktops and gaming laptops with NVIDIA GeForce, AMD Radeon or Intel Arc graphics. Menu names can vary by Windows build and laptop manufacturer.

Define what “maximum performance” means

Average FPS measures rendering throughput, but it does not describe the whole experience. A stable 100 FPS can feel better than an unstable 130 FPS if frame times are more even. Use several measures:

  • Average FPS: Overall rendering output.
  • 1% and 0.1% lows: Useful indicators of dips, although results depend on capture method.
  • Frame time: The time each frame takes to render; spikes are perceived as stutter.
  • Input latency: The delay from an input to the visible response.
  • Thermals, power and noise: Higher clocks can be counterproductive if they cause sustained throttling.
  • Image quality: Upscaling and frame generation can increase displayed FPS without producing the same number of natively rendered frames or reducing latency proportionally.

Choose a target before tuning: highest possible FPS, lowest latency, consistent frame pacing, quiet operation, laptop battery life or maximum visual quality.

1. Establish a repeatable baseline

Record your CPU and GPU models, RAM capacity and module count, RAM speed and XMP/EXPO status, monitor resolution and refresh rate, Windows build, GPU-driver version, game version, storage drive and free space. During a representative game scene, note CPU and GPU temperatures, clocks, utilization, VRAM, system RAM and frame-time behavior.

Useful Windows diagnostics

  • winver — shows Windows edition and version.
  • dxdiag — opens DirectX graphics, audio and driver information.
  • msinfo32 — shows BIOS mode, firmware, processor and memory details.
  • powercfg /getactivescheme — displays the active power scheme.
  • taskmgr — opens Task Manager for processes, startup applications and resource graphs.

Measure consistently

NVIDIA FrameView records FPS, frame-time metrics, latency, power and system information across NVIDIA, AMD and Intel graphics; its Windows 10-and-later guide is available at NVIDIA’s FrameView documentation. HWiNFO provides detailed sensors and licensing information at hwinfo.com/licenses. Game Bar is convenient for basic checks, while vendor overlays are useful for quick monitoring but can affect some games.

  1. Restart the PC and close unnecessary applications.
  2. Run the same benchmark or repeatable scene three times.
  3. Log average FPS, lows if available, frame-time behavior, temperatures, clocks and utilization.
  4. Change one variable only.
  5. Repeat the same runs and keep the change only if it improves the metric you care about without harming stability.

Use the same game version, save or scene, resolution, graphics settings and driver for before-and-after comparisons.

2. Identify the limiting component

GPU-limited

Near-full GPU utilization, a large FPS increase when resolution is lowered, high VRAM use, or a temperature/power limit indicate a graphics bottleneck. Reduce render resolution, ray tracing, volumetrics, shadows, reflections, ambient occlusion and effects; use supported upscaling; improve cooling; or consider a GPU upgrade when your target remains unattainable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

CPU-limited

If GPU utilization is well below full load, one or two CPU cores are busy, and lowering resolution barely changes FPS, reduce crowd density, simulation, view distance, physics, traffic and object detail. Close background workloads, check CPU power and temperatures, install appropriate chipset and firmware updates, and use a stable memory profile. Microsoft notes that AI and physics can make Windows games CPU-limited: Windows title performance guidance.

Memory-limited

RAM near capacity, paging, switching-application hitching, single-channel operation or default conservative memory speeds point to a memory problem. Confirm every module is detected, enable a supported XMP or EXPO profile, test it, and add capacity if games plus browsers, streaming or creative applications exhaust physical RAM.

Storage or asset-streaming limited

Long loading pauses, traversal stutter, texture pop-in, disk spikes or an almost-full drive suggest storage pressure. Keep reasonable free space, install streaming-heavy games on a fast SSD, and avoid downloads, synchronization, scans or intensive cleanup during testing. Do not manually defragment an SSD; use Windows storage optimization.

Thermal or power limited

Clocks that fall after several minutes, declining performance as the system heats, maximum fan speed, or large AC-versus-battery differences indicate throttling. Clean filters and heatsinks, verify fans, improve airflow, use laptop performance mode only on AC, and consider a conservative undervolt.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Network-limited is different

Ping, packet loss and server tick rate affect online responsiveness but do not raise local rendering FPS. Test network problems separately from graphics and frame-time measurements.

3. Fix hardware, cooling and firmware fundamentals

  • Connect a desktop monitor to the discrete GPU, not the motherboard video output.
  • Ensure the card is fully seated in the intended PCIe slot and every required power connector is inserted. Avoid severe bends near modern high-power connectors.
  • Use a power supply suitable for the GPU and confirm the display is set to its intended resolution and refresh rate.
  • Clean dust filters, check intake and exhaust direction, keep cables away from fans and avoid enclosed cabinets.
  • Monitor CPU package, GPU and hotspot temperatures, clock speeds and whether power or temperature limits are active.
  • On laptops, use a hard unobstructed surface, connect AC power, clean vents and select the manufacturer’s performance mode. A cooling pad helps only when it improves the laptop’s intake airflow.

BIOS updates and Resizable BAR

Update BIOS when the release addresses CPU compatibility, memory compatibility, Resizable BAR support, security, stability or a documented microcode issue—not simply because a newer file exists. Save settings first; updates can reset them, and an interrupted flash can prevent booting.

Resizable BAR lets a supported platform expose a larger GPU address range. It requires compatible motherboard firmware, CPU/platform, GPU and driver. BIOS often calls for Above 4G Decoding and Resizable BAR; AMD may label the feature Smart Access Memory. Microsoft describes the driver renegotiation process at Resizable BAR support. Verify the status in your vendor utility rather than assuming it is active.

4. Update Windows and official drivers

Install Windows updates, the motherboard chipset package, GPU drivers and—when relevant—network or audio drivers. Download from official sources:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If a new driver introduces crashes or stutter, reproduce the issue in another game, then install an official previous package or use the vendor rollback option. Use a clean installation only when normal installation or rollback fails, and never use third-party driver-download sites.

5. Configure Windows 11 carefully

Power mode

For a desktop benchmark or plugged-in laptop, open Settings > System > Power & battery > Power mode > Best performance. Microsoft warns that this raises power use, heat, fan noise and laptop battery drain: Windows performance tips. It can reduce performance if extra heat causes throttling, so compare it with Balanced. Do not assume the Ultimate Performance plan is faster.

Game Mode

Leave Game Mode enabled unless a specific title shows a reproducible problem. It is not a guaranteed FPS multiplier and operates independently of the power slider, as documented in Microsoft’s power-slider guidance.

Select the high-performance GPU

On a hybrid laptop, open Settings > System > Display > Graphics, add the game executable, choose Options > High performance > Save, then restart the game. The launcher and game executable may need separate entries. Manufacturer mux or graphics-mode software can take precedence. On desktops, the monitor still normally belongs on the discrete card. Microsoft explains the per-app choices at Optimizations for windowed games.

Windowed-game optimization

In the same Graphics page, test Optimizations for windowed games for compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 windowed or borderless games. Microsoft says it uses a newer flip-model path and can enable Auto HDR and VRR on supported displays; it does not apply universally. Restart after changing it, especially if HDR, capture, overlays or frame pacing changes.

Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling

HAGS moves much scheduling work toward GPU hardware. Microsoft describes its purpose in the DirectX developer blog, but FPS results depend on hardware, driver and workload. A/B-test it alone, reboot if requested, and keep it only when the target game improves without stutter, crashes or capture problems.

Background processes

Use Ctrl + Shift + Esc > Startup apps to disable unnecessary launchers and utilities. Keep security, audio, network, controller, laptop hotkey and anti-cheat services that you need. Cloud sync, browsers playing video, downloads, recording software, RGB utilities, antivirus scans and virtual machines can cause hitching; disable or pause them during controlled tests rather than removing essential protection.

6. Use vendor GPU software without blanket tweaks

NVIDIA

Use per-game profiles, supported DLSS modes, G-SYNC or compatible VRR and NVIDIA Reflex where the game supports it. Reflex targets latency, not guaranteed FPS; “On + Boost” can alter power and clock behavior. Avoid forcing a global “Prefer maximum performance,” which can increase idle heat and power. NVIDIA describes current App features and availability at the NVIDIA App page.

AMD

Adrenalin offers Radeon Anti-Lag, FSR, Fluid Motion Frames where supported, FreeSync, metrics, fan control, power tuning and undervolting. Anti-Lag targets latency, while frame generation can raise displayed FPS without a proportional responsiveness gain. Feature support varies by GPU generation and API; AMD documents the controls at Adrenalin performance and tuning.

Intel

Intel Application Optimization is game- and platform-specific, not a universal FPS switch. Check the supported CPU, driver, Windows build and Dynamic Tuning requirements on Intel’s current page.

7. Tune the game settings that matter

When the GPU is limiting

  1. Render resolution or resolution scale.
  2. Ray tracing.
  3. Volumetric lighting and fog.
  4. Shadows.
  5. Reflections.
  6. Ambient occlusion and global illumination.
  7. View distance, level of detail and effects.
  8. Textures only when VRAM is constrained.

When the CPU is limiting

  1. Crowd density and simulation quality.
  2. View distance and object density.
  3. Physics, NPC and traffic settings.
  4. Background-world detail and streaming options.

Textures often have little raw-FPS impact when VRAM is sufficient, but exhausted VRAM can cause severe streaming hitching. Do not lower every option indiscriminately.

Upscaling and dynamic resolution

Set the desired output resolution, then choose the highest-quality spatial, temporal or AI-assisted upscaling mode that meets your frame target. Inspect motion, foliage, fine detail, UI and ghosting; a static screenshot is insufficient. Dynamic resolution can stabilize a target FPS by changing internal resolution.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Frame generation

Generated frames increase displayed smoothness but do not remove the latency of the original rendered frames. They work best with a stable base FPS and can introduce artifacts, making them a poor fit for some competitive games. Report native or base FPS separately from generated FPS.

VRR, V-Sync and frame limits

Enable G-SYNC, FreeSync or DisplayPort Adaptive-Sync on a compatible display. Keep output within the monitor’s reliable VRR range and use one limiter—usually the in-game or driver limiter, whichever gives better frame pacing. Choose V-Sync according to your tearing and latency strategy rather than treating it as universally good or bad. Microsoft explains VRR behavior in its Graphics settings overview.

Shader compilation and streaming stutter

Let a game finish its shader-preparation step, keep shader caches enabled unless troubleshooting, and update the game and driver. Repeatedly deleting caches usually forces recompilation and can worsen short-term stutter. Distinguish shader compilation from asset streaming, CPU saturation, network issues and overlays.

8. Enable XMP or EXPO only after checking stability

XMP is common on Intel platforms and EXPO on AMD Ryzen platforms. The BIOS label varies, and using either profile is memory overclocking in practical terms. Booting successfully does not prove stability.

  • Confirm all memory is detected and running in the intended channel mode.
  • Enable the motherboard’s supported profile, not aggressive manual timings or voltages.
  • Test several games, cold boots, restarts and sleep/wake.
  • Run a memory stress test and watch for crashes, corrupted archives, WHEA errors and random reboots.

If instability appears, return to BIOS defaults, update BIOS only when its notes address compatibility, or choose a less aggressive supported profile.

9. Undervolt or overclock incrementally

  1. Save a stock baseline and a known-good default profile.
  2. Change one clock, voltage, fan or power setting by a small amount.
  3. Test a demanding game plus a stability workload.
  4. Check for artifacts, driver resets, crashes, WHEA errors and corrupted files over several sessions.
  5. Save the profile only after sustained stability, and disable “apply at startup” until then.

Undervolting can reduce temperature, power and noise and sometimes sustain higher clocks within a fixed thermal envelope. Too little voltage causes workload-specific crashes. Overclock gains are commonly smaller than those from correcting a bottleneck, cooling problem, memory configuration or game setting. MSI’s official Afterburner page warns about fake download sites and notes that its OC Scanner result still needs validation in your games.

10. Validate the final configuration

Repeat the original benchmark with identical software and settings, then test at least one other game and a long session. Compare average FPS, 1% lows, frame-time graphs, input latency where measurable, temperature, power, clock stability and noise. Keep a simple change log. A configuration that wins a five-minute benchmark but throttles after 20 minutes is not a performance improvement.

Troubleshooting matrix

Symptom Likely causes First recovery steps
FPS fell after enabling performance options Thermal throttling, driver regression, HAGS or overlay interaction, changed limiter Restore the prior profile, use Balanced or the OEM default, disable one changed feature, rerun the same test
Game uses integrated graphics Wrong Windows preference, laptop mode, launcher/executable mismatch, monitor on motherboard output Set the executable to High performance, check OEM GPU mode and cable routing, restart the game
Crashes after XMP/EXPO Unstable memory controller, BIOS or module combination Disable the profile or load safe defaults, test at stock, then try a less aggressive supported profile
Overlay causes hitching Multiple monitoring, capture, RGB or tuning hooks Disable every overlay, test cleanly, then re-enable one at a time
Higher FPS looks worse Low-quality upscaling, frame-generation artifacts, tearing, VRR range or uneven pacing Raise upscaling quality, separate base from generated FPS, use VRR and one sensible limiter
High temperatures and falling clocks Dust, blocked airflow, inadequate cooler, laptop power mode Clean and improve airflow, verify fans, use AC on laptops, reduce power or undervolt conservatively

What not to use as a default “FPS boost”

  • Blind registry edits, timer-resolution tools, process-affinity tricks and network tweaks.
  • Global maximum-performance profiles that keep the GPU hot at idle.
  • Disabling Memory Integrity, virtualization-based security, antivirus or other protections as a routine step.
  • Deleting shader caches repeatedly without measuring the result.
  • Automatic overclocks treated as proof of stability.
  • “FPS booster” software from unofficial sites.

Goal-based priorities

Goal Prioritize Qualify or avoid
Maximum FPS Diagnose the bottleneck, scale resolution, tune GPU-heavy settings and cooling Registry tweaks and blind driver profiles
Lowest latency Stable base FPS, Reflex or Anti-Lag where supported, sensible frame cap Frame generation in competitive games without testing
Best frame pacing Stable clocks, shader preparation, VRR and one limiter Stacked overlays and limiters
Quiet gaming Undervolting, frame cap and airflow Maximum power limits
Laptop performance AC power, OEM performance mode and unobstructed vents Maximum mode on battery
Best image quality Native or high-quality upscaling and sufficient VRAM Excessive sharpening or very low-quality scaling

Quick checklist

  • Measure a repeatable baseline.
  • Identify the GPU, CPU, memory, storage or thermal limit.
  • Update Windows and official drivers.
  • Connect laptops to AC and select the intended GPU.
  • Check cooling, clocks and temperatures.
  • Enable a stable XMP/EXPO profile and verify Resizable BAR when supported.
  • Adjust the bottleneck setting first; use VRR and one frame limiter.
  • Test HAGS, windowed-game optimization and vendor features individually.
  • Validate across games and a long session.
  • Roll back any change that worsens stability, frame pacing or your chosen goal.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I always set Windows to Best performance?

No. Microsoft’s Best performance mode can increase heat, noise, power use and laptop battery drain. Compare it with Balanced, especially if extra heat causes throttling.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does frame generation equal real FPS?

No. It adds displayed frames and can improve smoothness, but base rendering and input responsiveness remain closer to the non-generated frame rate.

Is XMP or EXPO guaranteed to be stable?

No. Stability depends on the memory kit, CPU memory controller, motherboard and BIOS. Test games, stress workloads, boots and sleep/wake before keeping the profile.
