Yes. The standard PS5, PS5 Digital Edition and slim models support Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax). There is no separate Wi-Fi 6 switch: connect the console to a compatible router and it should negotiate the best available wireless mode automatically. PS5 Pro also supports Wi-Fi 7; that capability does not apply to the standard PS5.
Which PS5 models support Wi-Fi 6?
Sony lists IEEE 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac/ax wireless support for the original PS5, its Digital Edition and the slim models. Because 802.11ax is the standard marketed as Wi-Fi 6, these consoles support it when connected to a router configured for that mode. Sony’s original PS5 specifications and its slim-model announcement list 802.11ax.
Sony lists 802.11be as well as 802.11ax for PS5 Pro, making Pro the model with Wi-Fi 7 support. Do not assume that a standard or slim PS5 supports Wi-Fi 7. Sony’s cited specifications establish Wi-Fi 6 support but do not establish Wi-Fi 6E or 6 GHz support for these models. Sony’s PS5 Pro specifications list its wireless standards.
How to connect a PS5 to a Wi-Fi 6 router
- On the PS5, open Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection.
- Select your router’s network name (SSID), enter its password and choose Connect.
- Run Test Internet Connection from the Network settings and check that the console connects successfully.
The console should negotiate Wi-Fi 6 automatically if the router’s relevant radio permits 802.11ax and the devices can connect under the router’s security and band settings. Sony also provides manual setup and WPS options; exact screen labels can vary by system software. See Sony’s connection setup instructions.

A Wi-Fi 6 router is not required just to get a PS5 online. Sony lists older standards too, including 802.11ac (Wi-Fi 5), so the console can connect to compatible older networks.
How to make the PS5 prefer 5 GHz
Five gigahertz is a frequency band, not a synonym for Wi-Fi 6. Wi-Fi 6 can operate on 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz, and a 5 GHz connection could use Wi-Fi 5 instead. A single network name shared by both bands may let the router steer the PS5 to either one.

- Powerful Dual-Core 900MHz Processor – Handles multiple data streams simultaneously for reliable performance across your devices. Ensures smooth streaming, online gaming, and video conferencing without buffering or lag.
- Go to Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection.
- Highlight the saved network and press the controller’s Options button.
- Open the advanced connection settings and, if the option is available, set Wi-Fi Frequency Bands to 5 GHz instead of Automatic.
- Reconnect if needed, then check the router’s client list to confirm the band.
Menu wording and availability can vary with system software. Five gigahertz often offers more throughput and less congestion at short to moderate range, but its signal is more easily weakened by walls and distance. If the PS5 is far from the router or behind several obstacles, compare performance with Automatic or 2.4 GHz rather than assuming 5 GHz will be better.
How to tell whether the PS5 is actually using Wi-Fi 6
The PS5’s ordinary internet connection test may not clearly show the negotiated Wi-Fi generation. The router’s administration app or connected-device page is the more useful place to check: find the PS5 and look for its negotiated wireless mode, such as 802.11ax, AX or Wi-Fi 6. Check the connected band and signal information there too.

Does Wi-Fi 6 make PS5 gaming or downloads faster?
Not automatically. Wi-Fi 6 can improve wireless efficiency and capacity, particularly when many devices share a busy network. That may make a connection more consistent than an older, congested wireless setup. But it cannot raise the speed of the internet plan or remove delays caused by the ISP, game server, routing, bufferbloat, weak signal or interference. PSN download conditions and competing network traffic also affect results.
For competitive gaming, a wired connection is preferable when practical because it avoids the variability of a wireless link. Sony lists Gigabit Ethernet (1000BASE-T) support for the original PS5; its connection guide explains wired setup.

PS5 Wi-Fi 6 troubleshooting
If the network does not appear
- Make sure the router’s Wi-Fi radio is on and the SSID is visible.
- Move the console closer to the router and check that it is broadcasting a compatible 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz network.
- Verify the network name, password and security settings. If the network remains missing, try Set Up Manually in the connection menu.
- Restart the router and PS5. If the router uses unusual channel or wireless settings, check its documentation and try a compatible configuration.
If it connects but is slow
- Check in the router’s client list whether the PS5 is on 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz, and whether it is using the intended access point or mesh node.
- Improve the console’s position relative to the router; walls, distance and interference can weaken Wi-Fi.
- Check whether other devices are using substantial bandwidth and whether the ISP connection or download service is the bottleneck.
- Restart networking equipment, update router firmware and, if possible, compare with Ethernet. Sony’s PS5 connection troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking signal, restarting equipment and trying a wired connection.
If the PS5 disconnects repeatedly
- Restart the PS5, router and modem.
- Remove the saved wireless connection and set it up again.
- Compare 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz, then test a phone hotspot if available to help distinguish a home-router issue from a console issue.
- Try Ethernet temporarily, and update PS5 system software and router firmware.
- If the issue persists, review router security, channel, band-steering and mesh settings; the right choices depend on the router and local conditions.
Keep IPv4 available. Sony says PS5 supports IPv6 but not an IPv6-only network connection. Avoid changing DNS as a first response to weak signal, interference or packet loss; DNS changes address a different class of problem. Sony’s system software update instructions give the console path: Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings.
Wi-Fi 6 or Ethernet for a PS5?
| Connection | Strengths | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Wi-Fi 6 | No cable; good capacity on a busy network. | Performance still depends on distance, walls, interference and band steering. |
| Wi-Fi 5 | Works with compatible older routers and devices. | Does not provide Wi-Fi 6’s newer efficiency and capacity features. |
| Gigabit Ethernet | Usually the most consistent choice for gaming and large downloads. | Needs a cable run or network equipment near the console. |
| Mesh Wi-Fi | Can extend coverage to a distant room. | A poorly placed node or weak wireless backhaul can reduce throughput or add latency. |
Use Ethernet if it is convenient. Otherwise, connect to the strongest nearby Wi-Fi access point and prefer 5 GHz when its signal is solid. A router upgrade makes sense when the existing network lacks Wi-Fi 6 or 5 GHz, has poor coverage or stability, or must serve many competing devices—not simply because the PS5 needs a special adapter.
