PS5 supports USB and Bluetooth keyboards, but not every keyboard is compatible, and each game decides whether to accept keyboard input. First test the keyboard in a PS5 text-entry field: if it works there but not in one game, the game’s support or settings are the likely issue—not necessarily the keyboard.
These steps apply to a keyboard connected to a PS5 or PS5 Pro console. They cover wired USB keyboards, Bluetooth keyboards and wireless models that use a USB receiver.
Start with this quick check
- Connect the keyboard directly to the PS5, without a hub, monitor, dock or switch.
- Try typing in a PS5 text-entry field, such as a search or message field.
- If it is wired, try another console USB port. If it is wireless, confirm the keyboard is using the intended Bluetooth or receiver mode.
- Re-pair a Bluetooth keyboard through Settings > Accessories > General > Bluetooth Accessories.
- Check the keyboard’s manual for a documented compatibility, BIOS, console or tournament mode, and test that mode if available.
- Restart the console, update the keyboard firmware with the maker’s official computer utility, and update PS5 system software.
- If the keyboard works in PS5 text fields but not in a particular game, check that game’s controls and publisher support information.
Find out whether the fault is the keyboard or the game
There are three separate questions: whether the PS5 supports the connection type, whether it can use that particular keyboard, and whether the game accepts keyboard input. PlayStation documents USB and Bluetooth keyboard use but cautions that not all devices work. Game controls are a separate matter: developers decide whether keyboard and mouse input is implemented in a game. PlayStation’s keyboard and mouse guide and its PS5 FAQ explain these distinctions.

A Bluetooth keyboard appearing in the PS5 scan list is not proof that it is compatible; PlayStation notes that an unsupported device may still appear. If you can, test in more than one PS5 text-entry field before moving on.

Reconnect a wired USB keyboard
A direct USB connection is the simplest way to remove wireless pairing and battery issues from the diagnosis.
- Turn on the PS5 and plug the keyboard directly into a console USB port.
- For the test, remove any hub, monitor USB passthrough, KVM switch, dock or extension cable between keyboard and console.
- If the cable detaches, reseat both ends. Try another PS5 port and temporarily disconnect other USB accessories or receivers.
- Test typing in a PS5 text-entry field. If possible, test the keyboard on a computer or another device as well.
- If the keyboard has lighting, passthrough ports or a display, turn off lighting and disconnect anything plugged into its passthrough. Then retest without a hub.
- If available, try a basic wired USB keyboard with a conventional layout and few extra features.
A simple keyboard is a diagnostic tool, not evidence that gaming keyboards as a category are unsupported. Some advanced models use profiles, macros, unusual operating modes or other features that make troubleshooting harder. Sony confirms USB keyboard support while warning that device compatibility varies in its PS5 keyboard guidance.
If one port works and another does not, use the working port while you check the suspect port with another low-power USB device. Inspect for debris or damage; do not force a connector or use a damaged cable. If multiple USB devices fail across ports, the issue may extend beyond the keyboard.

Pair a Bluetooth keyboard again
PS5 does support Bluetooth keyboards, subject to device compatibility. To pair one, put the keyboard into Bluetooth pairing mode, then follow this path on the console:

- Open Settings.
- Select Accessories, then General.
- Select Bluetooth Accessories.
- Choose the keyboard when it appears.
If it was paired before but no longer connects, select it among registered accessories and choose Connect. If that fails, remove or forget its old entry and pair it again. These are PlayStation’s documented Bluetooth steps: PS5 keyboard and mouse support.
- Disconnect the keyboard from a phone, tablet, computer or other console, or switch it to the correct device slot.
- Check that it is actually in pairing mode and has sufficient battery.
- If PS5 lists it but it will not type, treat that as a compatibility problem to investigate—not confirmation that pairing succeeded fully.
- If it types by USB but not Bluetooth, focus on its Bluetooth mode, pairing state and wireless connection rather than assuming the whole keyboard is broken.
Check the mode on a wireless keyboard with a USB receiver
“Wireless” may mean Bluetooth, a proprietary 2.4 GHz USB receiver, or a model that supports both. A receiver can combine keyboard and mouse signals, but PS5 compatibility still depends on how that receiver presents the input devices.

- Plug the receiver directly into the PS5 for the initial test.
- Use the keyboard’s switch or documented control to select receiver or 2.4 GHz mode, not Bluetooth mode.
- Charge the keyboard or replace its battery, then check the maker’s instructions for re-pairing it with the receiver.
- If the keyboard and mouse share a receiver, test the keyboard by itself.
- Test the receiver with a computer if available; update keyboard and receiver firmware if the manufacturer provides updates.
A receiver that works on a computer is not automatically guaranteed to work on PS5. If the keyboard has a direct USB mode, compare that with receiver operation to isolate the wireless side.
Turn off special profiles or use a documented compatibility mode
Gaming keyboards may have a Windows-lock or gaming mode, a profile or macro layer, a layout switch, rollover settings, custom polling rates, onboard profiles or a wireless-mode switch. If the keyboard has a documented BIOS, compatibility, console or tournament mode, enable it temporarily and retest. The shortcut and effect vary by model, so use the manufacturer’s manual rather than a generic key combination.
A keyboard may also depend on computer software to apply a profile or remap keys. Test with a plain onboard profile, if the maker documents how, and compare on a computer. A BIOS or compatibility mode is a model-specific possibility, not a universal PS5 requirement. A community report, for example, discusses a mode for a particular setup, but does not establish a general fix: anecdotal PS5 keyboard troubleshooting report.

Update keyboard firmware, then restart the setup
Consider a firmware update if the keyboard is detected under the wrong device category, appears connected but sends no keys, works on a computer but not PS5, or stopped working after a profile or device change. Use the keyboard maker’s official utility on a Windows PC or Mac; PS5 does not provide a general updater for third-party keyboard firmware. Follow instructions for the exact model, since firmware procedures differ.
For example, SteelSeries documents a keyboard-detection issue and directs users to its GG software for an update. That example applies to the affected product and issue; it is not evidence that every keyboard needs the same fix. See SteelSeries’ support article and SteelSeries GG.
After reconnecting or changing the keyboard setup, use this low-risk restart sequence before considering recovery options:

- Turn off the keyboard and shut down the PS5 completely rather than leaving it in Rest Mode.
- Disconnect the keyboard or receiver and wait briefly.
- Start the PS5, reconnect the wired keyboard or receiver, and test again. For Bluetooth, remove its old entry and pair it again if needed.
Update PS5 system software
If the problem persists—especially if other accessories are also behaving abnormally—check for a console update at Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings.
If a normal update is unavailable, PlayStation describes Safe Mode and its system-software update options in its Safe Mode guide. Safe Mode is a later troubleshooting step, not a guaranteed keyboard repair. To start it, turn off the PS5 by holding the power button for three seconds; then hold the power button again and release after the second beep, approximately seven seconds later. Connect the controller by USB and press the PS button. Read each option carefully and do not choose a reset or data-deleting option unless you understand its consequences.
When a keyboard works in menus but not a game
If it types in PS5 text fields, the keyboard is functioning for at least some system input. The game may not support keyboard controls, may support only chat or text entry, or may restrict input to certain modes or keys. Support can also differ between a game’s PS5 and PS4 versions, and some titles require you to enable keyboard controls or keep a controller connected.
Check the game’s controls menu and the publisher’s current support information for the exact platform version and mode you are playing. Sony’s PS5 FAQ explains that game developers determine whether keyboard and mouse controls work. A console-level connection cannot add controls that a game has not implemented.

Know when to replace the keyboard or contact support
- If another keyboard works in the same PS5 port and text field, the original keyboard, its cable, receiver, profile or compatibility is the likely cause. Check its model-specific support before replacing it.
- If the keyboard works by cable but not wirelessly, focus on its pairing, battery, wireless mode or receiver rather than buying a replacement immediately.
- If it works in PS5 menus but not one game, verify that game’s support before buying another keyboard or adapter.
- If multiple known-working keyboards fail across ports and connection types after the restart and system update steps, contact PlayStation Support rather than repeatedly buying accessories.
- If the goal is occasional text entry, the DualSense on-screen keyboard or PlayStation App messaging may be sufficient; for gameplay, confirm the specific game supports keyboard input before choosing hardware.
Do not factory-reset the console as an early keyboard fix. A direct connection, fresh pairing, model-appropriate firmware update and test with another keyboard provide useful evidence without risking user data.
