Install Kodi on a supported RetroPie system through the current RetroPie-Setup package manager. Select the optional kodi package, choose its binary installation, then launch Kodi from EmulationStation → Ports → Kodi. Kodi runs as an application inside RetroPie; it does not replace RetroPie with a dedicated media-center operating system.
Before you begin
This procedure is aimed at a Raspberry Pi running the official RetroPie image or a supported Raspberry Pi OS-based RetroPie installation. The current RetroPie module also handles Ubuntu on x86, but it rejects unsupported operating-system and platform combinations. Mali-based platforms, OSMC and Xbian are among the environments excluded by the module (current Kodi module).
- A working RetroPie installation and network connection
- Enough free storage for Kodi, dependencies, thumbnails and media metadata
- A reliable power supply and display connected to the Pi
- A USB or wireless keyboard for first-run setup and troubleshooting
- A backup of important ROM, BIOS and RetroPie configuration files
Update RetroPie-Setup before installing. Menu names vary slightly between releases, so look for the package named kodi rather than relying on an old screenshot. Kodi is optional; it is not included in a standard RetroPie installation. RetroPie’s first-installation requirements are documented in its official guide.
Install Kodi through RetroPie-Setup
- From EmulationStation, open RetroPie and select RetroPie Setup.
- Allow the setup script to update itself if an update is offered.
- Open Manage packages.
- Choose the optional packages or ports list.
- Select the package identified as
kodi. - Choose the binary install option when it is available. Binary installation avoids compiling Kodi on the Pi.
- Wait while dependencies, Kodi and available input-stream or joystick components are installed and configured. Do not interrupt the process.
- Exit RetroPie-Setup cleanly. If the new entry is not visible, restart EmulationStation or reboot the Pi.
The module chooses repositories according to the environment: older Raspberry Pi OS/Raspbian releases (Debian 10 or earlier) may receive the Pipplware repository, newer Raspberry Pi OS/Raspbian releases use packages pinned to Raspberry Pi Foundation origins, and Ubuntu x86 uses the Kodi team PPA. These are implementation details of the current script, not universal commands to add manually.

For a functioning existing RetroPie system, do not substitute a generic sudo apt-get install kodi command. The Kodi Wiki documents that command for Raspberry Pi OS installations, but RetroPie-Setup also handles its launcher, configuration layout and platform checks (Kodi Wiki).
Launch and exit Kodi
After configuration, open Ports in EmulationStation and select Kodi. The RetroPie module creates this entry with the kodi-standalone command, which is why Kodi appears as a port rather than a console system (module source).
Complete initial language, display, network and media-library setup with a keyboard if your gamepad is not recognized. To return to EmulationStation, use Kodi’s on-screen power menu and choose its exit option, or use the exit key/button configured for your Kodi installation. RetroArch hotkeys should not be assumed to work: RetroPie documents those shortcuts primarily for RetroArch/Libretro emulators, not every application.

What version will install?
The official Kodi Raspberry Pi download page displayed stable Kodi 21.3 “Omega” on August 18, 2026 (Kodi download page). RetroPie does not hard-code that website version; it installs the compatible package supplied by the repositories selected for your operating system and release.

If Kodi is missing from the package list
- Update RetroPie-Setup, then restart EmulationStation.
- Return to RetroPie Setup → Manage packages and check optional packages and ports for
kodi. - Confirm that the image is based on a supported Raspberry Pi OS/Raspbian release or Ubuntu x86.
- Check the setup-script log for the actual platform or repository error.
Third-party or heavily modified images can omit repositories or platform metadata required by the module. Do not copy an old Kodi launcher script as a first response; the current module contains the compatibility and repository logic that historical guides lack.
Fix common installation failures
“Kodi is not installable”
This can be a legitimate compatibility result. The module deliberately stops when the operating system or architecture does not match its supported cases. Do not force a foreign repository or install an old standalone .deb without accepting the risk of broken dependencies. Use a current supported RetroPie image, or choose LibreELEC if Kodi is the primary purpose.

Dependency or repository errors on an old image
Older RetroPie images may point to retired Debian/Raspberry Pi OS repositories, while current Kodi packages require newer libraries. Updating the underlying OS can affect emulators and configurations, so back up first. For the least disruptive solution, install a current RetroPie image on a separate card or use a separate LibreELEC card rather than mixing unmaintained Kodi 17/18 instructions into the old system.
Kodi installed but no Ports entry appears
- Exit RetroPie-Setup and restart EmulationStation.
- Verify that installation and configuration completed without errors.
- Check the Ports category again.
- Re-run package configuration through RetroPie-Setup if offered.
The module’s configuration function creates the Kodi port, so a missing entry usually indicates incomplete configuration or stale EmulationStation state. Manual edits to es_systems.cfg should be an advanced recovery step, not the normal installation method.
Black screen or immediate exit
- Reboot with the display connected and retry.
- Check the RetroPie-Setup log for graphics or dependency errors.
- Confirm that the image uses a supported graphics stack and operating-system release.
- As an advanced diagnostic, test Kodi from a terminal, but do not replace the module’s
kodi-standalonelauncher casually.
If the Pi is intended mainly for media playback, a dedicated Kodi distribution is often the more reliable architecture.

Controller input does not work
Use a USB keyboard to finish setup, reconnect or pair the controller after Kodi starts, and configure input in Kodi separately from RetroArch. A small keyboard or media remote is often more practical than a gamepad for text entry and library management.
Add-ons or streaming services fail
Installing Kodi does not provide paid subscriptions, DRM licenses or guaranteed support for any streaming provider. Use official Kodi repository add-ons where available, and check each service’s own legal and hardware requirements. Avoid unofficial piracy add-ons.

These options solve different problems. RetroPie remains a gaming-focused operating environment and launches Kodi as one optional port. | Your priority | Better fit |
|---|---|
| Mostly retro games with occasional movies or music | Kodi inside RetroPie |
| Mostly movies, television and music | LibreELEC |
| General-purpose Linux plus Kodi | Raspberry Pi OS plus Kodi |
| Maximum separation and reliability | Separate RetroPie and LibreELEC microSD cards |
Use Raspberry Pi OS’s direct sudo apt-get update and sudo apt-get install kodi route when RetroPie is not part of the system. On an existing RetroPie installation, the RetroPie-Setup module is preferable because it integrates the port and applies platform-specific repository handling.
Does installing Kodi affect your games?
A normal optional-package installation adds Kodi and its launcher; it does not intentionally delete ROMs or emulator settings. Nevertheless, package and operating-system changes can expose problems on damaged or very old images, which is why a backup is prudent before installation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Kodi run on every Raspberry Pi RetroPie image?
No. Availability depends on the operating system, architecture, repositories and graphics stack recognized by the current RetroPie-Setup module. Unsupported images can correctly report that Kodi is not installable.
Can I use a Raspberry Pi 5?
Official Kodi and LibreELEC provide Raspberry Pi 5 support, but successful installation still depends on the RetroPie image and its package repositories. Raspberry Pi 5 support is not a guarantee for every third-party image.
Can RetroPie and LibreELEC be dual-booted?
Yes, with a supported multiboot arrangement, or more simply by keeping each operating system on its own microSD card.
Is Kodi free?
Kodi, RetroPie, RetroPie-Setup and LibreELEC are free and open-source software. Hardware, subscriptions and some streaming services are separate costs.
