In January 2022, iPhone users searching the App Store for the suddenly viral Wordle found unofficial copies, including an app called “Wordle – The App”. Tech Times reported that the clone offered limited play free and an approximately $30-per-year “Pro” subscription for unlimited games. The original Wordle was a free browser game, so the episode became a sharp example of how a viral search term, App Store visibility and recurring billing could be combined to sell an imitation.
The report does not prove that every listed app was a scam, that the figures were independently audited, or that Apple later removed this particular app. It does show why users and developers should distinguish a legitimately inspired game from an app that borrows a famous name or presentation.
What happened in January 2022
Tech Times published its report on January 11, 2022, during Wordle’s rapid rise in popularity and shortly before The New York Times acquired the game. Wordle, created by Josh Wardle, was played in a web browser rather than downloaded from Apple’s App Store. The contemporary report described the original experience as free and said it did not require an in-app purchase.
That absence created an obvious search opportunity. People who expected an iPhone app searched “Wordle” in the App Store, where several similarly named games appeared. One listing, “Wordle – The App,” reportedly let users play a limited number of games without paying, then offered unlimited play through a “Pro” option costing about $30 annually. That was a historical price reported in 2022, not a current subscription quote.
#1 Best Overall
Tech Times also reported the developer’s claim of roughly 12,000 downloads, a No. 28 position in the word-game category and a No. 4 App Store search result. Those numbers were claims attributed to the developer, not an independently verified Apple ranking archive. A social-media post cited in the article likewise claimed that multiple highly ranked word-game listings were Wordle clones. They should be read as snapshots of the reported moment, not as audited App Store-wide statistics.
Why the model was attractive to copycats
Viral demand did the marketing
Wordle’s daily sharing loop made its name unusually valuable. Users posted colored result grids, friends searched for the same puzzle, and people who had only encountered the game in conversation looked for an app. An app title containing the exact search term could capture that intent before a user checked who made it.
Subscriptions changed a simple game into recurring revenue
A basic guessing game can be inexpensive to operate. A yearly subscription, however, turns a one-time download into recurring billing. Charging for additional play is not automatically fraudulent: an independently made game may sell original modes or convenience features. The consumer-protection concern arises when the name, icon, screenshots or description make an independent product look official, or when the paid entitlement is presented unclearly.

What the 2022 report did not establish
The available account does not establish whether the clone clearly disclosed its recurring terms before purchase, whether its annual price was prominent in Apple’s purchase sheet, whether it had substantial features beyond the original, or how easy cancellation was. Those are the questions that determine whether a paid app was merely expensive, misleading, or unlawfully deceptive.

Apple’s current App Review Guidelines provide a useful benchmark even though the incident occurred in 2022.
- Guideline 4.1: developers must not simply copy a popular app or make only minor changes to its name or user interface.
- Apple bars apps that impersonate another app or service and restricts use of another developer’s icon, brand or product name without permission.
- Guideline 3.1.1: digital features and functionality generally must use Apple’s In-App Purchase system. Apple says misleading marketing, scams or fraud connected to an entitlement can lead to removal.
- Apple’s business guidance says clear rip-offs and irrationally high prices intended to cheat users may be rejected.
Apple says App Review examines apps, updates, bundles, in-app-purchase items and in-app events. Its review overview also acknowledges recurring problems such as copycats, misleading users and repeated similar submissions. Separate Apple guidance on preventing copycat and impersonator rejections is available in its App Review forum.

Why an app can appear in the store without being official
Publication is not endorsement. Pre-publication review checks a submission against platform rules and the information available to reviewers; it is not a guarantee that the developer owns a name, that the app is good value, or that users will never be confused. Post-publication enforcement can follow complaints, press coverage, rights-holder disputes or a later review.
That distinction explains how an apparently imitative app could be visible while Apple’s rules prohibited copycats. It does not prove that Apple intentionally approved deception, nor does the listing alone prove a legal violation. The specific clone’s approval rationale, any complaint and any later enforcement action have not been publicly established in the supplied record.

Similar mechanics are not the whole legal question
Guessing a word and receiving colored feedback is a game concept or method that may not, by itself, be protected expression. A developer can potentially build a word puzzle with similar mechanics without copying another product’s code or artwork.

Branding and presentation can create risk
The name “Wordle,” logos, icons, screenshots, written descriptions and an overall look can raise trademark, trade-dress or unfair-competition concerns. Copying source code, illustrations, text or other original assets creates a different copyright issue. Apple’s Guideline 4.1 is broader and more practical than a courtroom copyright test: it asks whether an app copies, impersonates or makes the store harder to navigate.
Paid does not mean scam
A subscription is not inherently improper just because the original web game was free. Calling an app a scam requires stronger evidence of deliberate deception, unauthorized charging or another legal finding. In the 2022 case, the careful description is that the app appeared to capitalize on Wordle’s name recognition and the lack of an official App Store version.

How to avoid paying for a misleading listing
- Use the original game’s official web destination, The New York Times Wordle page, rather than assuming an App Store result is authorized. Access and pricing can vary by date, country and NYT Games tier.
- On any alternative app, inspect the developer name, description, privacy policy, screenshots and stated relationship to Wordle or The New York Times.
- Treat an exact or near-exact “Wordle” title, matching iconography, “official” language without proof, or several near-identical listings from one developer as warning signs.
- Before confirming an in-app purchase, read the trial duration, auto-renewal language, annual price and the precise feature being unlocked. A free trial may convert automatically.
- Do not infer authenticity from an App Store appearance or a high ranking. Rankings are not a rights-holder verification system.
If you already subscribed
Use Apple’s own account and billing tools, not a third-party cancellation service.
- Find the charge in your Apple purchase history and identify the app and billing date.
- Cancel the subscription in Apple’s subscription-management controls so it will not renew. Menu names vary by iOS release and account region.
- Request a refund through Apple’s Report a Problem service if the purchase was accidental or you believe the presentation was misleading.
- Keep screenshots of the listing, price, trial language, receipt and any confusing claims. They preserve evidence if the listing changes.
- For account or billing help, use Apple’s official billing support and Apple ID support pages, and report the app through Apple’s available reporting mechanisms.
What developers can learn
A Wordle-inspired game has a clearer path when it uses a distinct name and icon, identifies itself as independent, adds original mechanics or modes, and uses original code, artwork and text. Multiplayer, accessibility, language support or genuinely new puzzle systems can differentiate a product; a lightly changed title and interface do not. Apple’s developer guidance encourages unique content and meaningful differentiation, and its forum has documented Wordle-inspired apps receiving Guideline 4.1 scrutiny even when developers argued that their gameplay differed.
The broader platform lesson
The January 2022 episode was less a verdict on every word puzzle than a test of App Store governance. A viral term can outrun human review, automated search systems can surface imitators, and recurring purchases can magnify a small design decision into a consumer problem. Apple’s written rules address copycats, impersonation and deceptive subscriptions, but enforcement is partly post-publication. For users, the practical safeguard is to verify identity and billing terms before tapping subscribe; for developers, originality must include the name, presentation and business model, not only the underlying game mechanic.
