Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

The reported 4GB RAM, 32GB storage ChromeOS laptop was a reasonable ultra-cheap machine for browsing and schoolwork, but it cannot run Grand Theft Auto V locally. In 2026, consider a similar machine only for basic tasks, after checking its exact model, software-support date, condition, and price.
What was the $79 Walmart Chromebook?
Deal coverage identified the offer as an HP Chromebook 11 or 11.6-inch-class HP Chromebook with an AMD A4 processor, 4GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, and ChromeOS. TechRadar reported a $79 sale price, down from about $98. The promotion was published on November 8, 2022, so it should be treated as a historical deal, not a price Walmart currently guarantees. TechRadar’s deal coverage and Tom’s Guide’s specifications describe the offer; the latter gives the screen size as 11.3 inches, while other coverage calls it 11.6 inches. The exact retail SKU was not consistently identified, so do not assume every HP Chromebook 11 listing is the same machine.
The price was unusually low for that particular HP configuration: TechRadar called it the lowest price it had seen for the model. That is a publication’s observation about the deal, not proof it was the cheapest Chromebook on the entire market. TechTimes covered the November 8, 2022 promotion; Live Science reported strong sales activity during it.
What the specifications mean in everyday use
The AMD A4, 4GB of RAM, and 32GB of storage place this in the basic Chromebook category. ChromeOS and browser-based applications make it suitable for light tasks, but the modest memory and storage constrain how much you can do at once and keep on the device.

- Chrome OS: Chromebook is a computer for the way the modern world works, with thousands of apps. Enjoy the seamless simplicity that comes with Google Chrome and Android apps, all integrated into one laptop. It’s fast, simple, and secure.
- Reasonable uses: browsing with a modest number of tabs, email, Google Docs, Sheets and Classroom, video calls, ordinary streaming, and basic homework.
- Possible with limits: lightweight browser or Android games, and remote or cloud-based applications that support ChromeOS.
- Poor fits: demanding multitasking, video editing, professional creative software, large application installs, extensive offline media, and modern PC games.
“32GB” is the advertised total, not 32GB freely available for apps and files. ChromeOS, updates, downloaded files, browser data, and any Android or Linux apps all compete for that space. The reported 4GB RAM also leaves little headroom for numerous tabs alongside video calls or apps.
Can it run GTA V locally?
No. Rockstar’s published PC requirements do not list ChromeOS as a supported operating system, and the reported HP configuration falls short on storage and graphics as well. Matching the Legacy edition’s numerical minimum of 4GB RAM does not make the Chromebook compatible: the operating system, GPU, and installation-space requirements still fail. This conclusion follows from the published specifications and requirements; it is not a claim of a hands-on test of this exact unit.

| Requirement | Reported HP deal configuration | GTA V Legacy minimum | GTA V Enhanced minimum |
|---|---|---|---|
| Operating system | ChromeOS | Windows 10 64-bit | Windows 10 |
| RAM | 4GB | 4GB | 8GB |
| Storage | 32GB advertised capacity | 125GB HDD | 105GB SSD |
| Graphics | Low-end integrated graphics; not established as meeting Rockstar’s listed GPU requirement | NVIDIA 9800 GT 1GB or AMD HD 4870 1GB | GTX 1630 or Radeon RX 6400-class GPU with 4GB VRAM |
Requirements for both editions are listed by Rockstar Support. The Chromebook’s advertised 32GB is far below either edition’s storage requirement, and its low-end integrated graphics are not equivalent to the specified dedicated GPUs. A Windows laptop’s “gaming” label alone is not enough either; check its components against Rockstar’s requirements.
Would Steam or Linux make it work?
No practical workaround turns this configuration into a suitable local GTA V machine. Google’s Steam-for-Chromebook guidance sets a hardware floor of an Intel Core i3 or Ryzen 3 processor, 8GB RAM, and 128GB storage, as well as requiring a supported Chromebook model. The reported AMD A4, 4GB, and 32GB configuration is below all three thresholds. Google’s Steam guidance also notes limitations, bugs, performance problems, and title-availability restrictions. Installing Steam from the Play Store, enabling developer mode, or trying Linux compatibility layers does not solve this machine’s operating-system, storage, memory, and graphics shortfalls.

Could cloud gaming stream GTA V to it?
Possibly in principle, but streaming is different from installing and running the game on the Chromebook. It would depend on a provider supporting GTA V at the time, the correct game edition and ownership, the user’s region, browser and ChromeOS compatibility, controller support, and a sufficiently fast, low-latency connection. Game catalogs and licensing change, so verify the provider’s current catalog before paying; no service availability or price is guaranteed here. Cloud gaming is a poor fit for unstable broadband, high latency, strict data caps, or offline use.

Only as a very cheap basic or secondary computer—and only after checking the device in front of you. Walmart’s marketplace page has shown restored HP Chromebook 11 variants with AMD A4, 4GB RAM, and 32GB storage around $50, along with other used or refurbished Chromebooks below $80. Those listings are not equivalent to a new $79 unit from 2022: marketplace sellers, battery condition, warranty, return terms, and availability vary. Walmart’s Chromebook listings should be checked directly for current details rather than treated as a fixed-price offer.

Check before paying
- Exact model: “HP Chromebook 11” covers multiple generations and configurations. Confirm the model number, processor, memory, and storage rather than relying on the family name.
- ChromeOS support: Look up the model’s current Auto Update Expiration date. Support varies by exact model and board; do not assume all Chromebook 11 versions share one deadline.
- Condition and battery: For refurbished or pre-owned units, check battery health, screen, hinge, charger, and the seller’s return policy and warranty.
- Management status: Make sure an education-edition device is not still enrolled or managed by a school or organization.
- Price against alternatives: If the asking price approaches that of a newer Chromebook with 8GB RAM and 64GB or 128GB storage, the older 4GB/32GB model is difficult to justify.
- Your workload: Buy only if browser-based schoolwork, email, and light browsing are enough. If you need Windows software, extensive local storage, or demanding games, choose a different category of device.
What to buy instead for games or more demanding work
For local PC gaming, look for a Windows computer with components that meet the edition’s requirements; a refurbished Windows laptop is not automatically suitable just because it runs Windows. For a Chromebook intended for more capable everyday use, prioritize 8GB RAM, at least 64GB storage (128GB is preferable), a stronger processor, and a verified support horizon. Those are buying criteria, not a guarantee that GTA V will run on ChromeOS. If you already own a Chromebook and only want to stream games, check a cloud provider’s current game catalog and regional availability before subscribing. If GTA V is the main goal, a suitable Windows gaming PC or console is a more direct choice.
