RetroArch brings DOS emulation to Apple devices through DOSBox Pure—but it does not include the games. Here is what you need, what works best and how to fix common problems.

Yes—RetroArch can run compatible MS-DOS games on Apple devices. Its Apple app lists DOS as a supported platform, while the DOSBox Pure Libretro core provides the DOS emulation. RetroArch does not include commercial games: you must add legally obtained game files, and results vary by title, input method, sound hardware and disk format.

What RetroArch’s Apple release actually adds

RetroArch became available worldwide through Apple’s App Store on May 15, 2024, bringing its multi-system frontend to iPhone, iPad and Apple TV. The current U.S. listing also identifies Mac and Apple Vision compatibility and includes DOS among the supported systems. Check the App Store listing for the device and operating-system requirements shown in your region.

This is emulation support, not a re-release of a game library. RetroArch supplies the frontend and cores; it does not supply copyrighted DOS installers, disk images or ROMs. Apple-platform builds can also differ in interface, bundled cores and feature availability, so desktop instructions do not always map exactly to an iPhone or iPad.

Which DOS core should you use?

DOSBox Pure: the best starting point

DOSBox Pure is designed for RetroArch and is the recommended first choice for most users. Its documented features include save states, rewind, an on-screen keyboard, customizable controls, automatic detection for many DOS games, game-specific mappings, packaged-game support and optional MIDI or Roland MT-32 emulation.

It can often launch a supported archive or game directory without making you recreate every original DOS command. That convenience does not guarantee compatibility: some games still need installation, manual executable selection, disk swapping or specific audio settings.

The standard DOSBox core

RetroArch also documents a separate DOSBox core. It is useful when a title behaves incorrectly in DOSBox Pure or when you need more traditional DOSBox controls, such as explicit device selection and CPU-cycle adjustment. Treat it as a troubleshooting alternative, not proof that every DOS game will run.

Supported Apple devices and input

The App Store listing covers iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple TV, and the listing also references Apple Vision devices. Individual cores and options may not be identical on every platform. Libretro’s Apple installation guide describes iOS, iPadOS and tvOS differences: iPhone uses the GLUI interface, while iPad versions after RetroArch 1.19.1 use Ozone by default. The guide says an MFi controller is required for Apple TV use.

Touch controls

Touch works reasonably for turn-based strategy, adventures, menus, card games and other slower software. It is much less comfortable for fast action, platformers, flight simulators and games requiring several simultaneous keyboard commands. DOSBox Pure’s on-screen keyboard is essential for typing, installers, configuration prompts and copy-protection responses.

Controllers, keyboards and mice

RetroArch advertises MFi-controller support, overlays and per-core or per-game remapping in its App Store listing. A Bluetooth or MFi gamepad suits joystick-oriented games, but it cannot reproduce every DOS control scheme. A physical keyboard is strongly recommended for strategy games, text-heavy adventures, RPGs, simulators and command-driven software. A mouse or trackpad is valuable for point-and-click adventures and mouse-led strategy interfaces.

What you need before setup

  • RetroArch installed from the App Store.
  • A legally obtained DOS game directory, archive, executable, floppy image or CD image.
  • All required disks, installation files and configuration files, with the original directory structure preserved.
  • Optional BIOS, font, MIDI or sound assets for titles that require them.
  • A controller, keyboard or mouse if the game’s original input cannot be reproduced comfortably by touch.

“Abandonware” is not a blanket legal exception. Use files you dumped yourself or obtained from a legitimate source, and verify the rights attached to any BIOS, disk image or commercial release.

Basic setup on an Apple device

Menu names can change between App Store builds, so use the labels shown in your installation rather than assuming a desktop path such as “Online Updater → Core Downloader.” The documented workflow is:

  1. Install RetroArch from the App Store, open it and allow the app to create or select its storage directory.
  2. Copy your legally obtained game files with the Files app, Downloads, cloud storage, AirDrop or another supported transfer method.
  3. Open RetroArch’s current core or content-management area and check whether DOSBox Pure is available. Some Apple builds bundle or distribute cores differently.
  4. Choose Load Core and select DOSBox Pure.
  5. Choose Load Content, then browse to the archive, executable, directory, floppy image or CD image.
  6. If automatic launching fails, use DOSBox Pure’s file browser or a manual scan and start the game’s executable yourself.
  7. Configure controls in RetroArch’s input settings. Map keyboard, mouse, joystick and gamepad functions according to the title.
  8. Save a core remap or game-specific remap only after confirming that the game launches through the same core and content path you will use later.
  9. Create an in-game save or RetroArch save state after confirming that the title is stable.

Where Apple DOS gaming works best

Game type Typical experience Best input
Turn-based strategy, classic RPGs and card or board games Usually comfortable at a slower pace; menus and text remain the main consideration. Touch can work; keyboard improves text entry.
Point-and-click adventures Playable, but precise cursor movement is easier with a mouse or trackpad. Mouse or trackpad; keyboard for commands.
Simple platformers and arcade conversions Good candidates when the game uses a straightforward directional layout. Physical controller.
Simulators and command-heavy games Often awkward with touch because of extensive shortcuts and typing. Physical keyboard, usually with a mouse.
CD-ROM, multi-disk or unusual-hardware titles More setup is likely; mounting, swapping, sound and copy protection can become obstacles. Keyboard and controller as required.

Windows 3.x, Windows 95 and Windows 98 software should not be treated as ordinary DOS titles. Some may run, but they can require different configuration and performance expectations.

Sound, MIDI and storage details

Classic games may target AdLib, Sound Blaster, Gravis Ultrasound, General MIDI or Roland MT-32 hardware. Default Sound Blaster audio often works immediately, but enhanced MIDI may require selecting an emulated device and supplying appropriate ROM or sound-font assets. MT-32 emulation is not identical to owning the original hardware. A game can run while its music, digital effects or speech remain incorrect.

Keep each game in a clearly named folder and preserve relative paths. Do not rename executables unless a launcher requires it. Large CD-based games are generally safer when stored locally if cloud-provider access causes delays or disconnects. Keep backup copies outside RetroArch, and use the Files app to verify that an archive really reached the RetroArch directory. Detection without launch usually means the selected core, archive contents, disk image or directory structure needs checking.

Troubleshooting common failures

Symptom Checks and recovery
DOSBox Pure is missing Update RetroArch, confirm the device and OS, inspect the current core-management menus, and try the documented DOSBox core if it is available. Do not install random core files from unofficial sources. If the Apple build does not expose the needed core, consider iDOS 3 or a desktop installation.
The game is detected but will not start Confirm the correct core, check that the archive contains an executable, preserve its folders, include every required disk or CD image, and rule out Windows-only software or unsupported copy protection.
Black screen, missing effects or distorted speech Review the selected video and sound configuration, then test Sound Blaster, MIDI or other device settings appropriate to the game.
Controls are wrong Use a per-game remap, distinguish keyboard, mouse, joystick and gamepad device types, enable the on-screen keyboard, and save the mapping only after a successful launch. DOSBox Pure documents separate mouse-emulation modes at its core guide.
The game runs too fast or too slowly Timing assumptions, audio synchronisation and CPU cycles may be responsible. The standard DOSBox core documentation describes cycle controls that can help with titles needing manual adjustment.
An installer asks for another floppy Mount or swap the next disk image when the current build permits it, or use a legally packaged version that avoids reconstructing a floppy installation. There is no universal hot-swap procedure across Apple builds.
Desktop works, iPhone does not Compare available cores, transferred files, controller mappings, graphics and audio options, and core versions. Apple restrictions and platform-specific performance can change the result; Libretro documents version limitations in its iOS compilation notes.

RetroArch or iDOS 3?

RetroArch is the stronger choice if you want one free frontend for DOS and other retro systems, with save states, rewind, shaders, overlays and broad remapping. Its trade-off is a more complicated core-and-content workflow.

iDOS 3 is a paid, DOS-focused alternative for iPhone and iPad. The U.S. listing showed $4.99 when checked; prices vary by country and may change. It requires iOS/iPadOS 15 or later and advertises a virtual keyboard, virtual gamepad, mouse controls and Bluetooth controller, keyboard and mouse support. It is a better fit when DOS is the only target and a dedicated interface matters more than a multi-system library.

What RetroArch supplies—and what it does not

RetroArch supplies: the frontend, Libretro cores and configuration features such as remapping, overlays, save states and rewind.

You supply: legally obtained game files and, where required, BIOS, font, MIDI or sound assets. Copyright and distribution rules vary by jurisdiction; downloading an “abandonware” copy is not automatically lawful.

Bottom line

RetroArch is a practical way to play many classic DOS games on iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV and potentially Apple Vision devices, with DOSBox Pure as the sensible first core. It is not a one-tap game store: you provide the files, select the right core, configure the controls and accept that compatibility is title-specific. Choose a physical controller for action games, a keyboard and mouse for text- or cursor-heavy software, and iDOS 3 when a simpler DOS-only workflow is worth paying for.
