Install the Windows PC version through Steam, the Microsoft PC launcher, or Epic Games Store and allow BattlEye to install. The important limitation is the operating system: Bungie does not support Destiny 2 through SteamOS, Proton, or another Linux-based compatibility layer, and attempts to bypass that restriction can result in a ban.
Why Destiny 2 works on the ROG Ally
The ROG Ally is a Windows gaming handheld, so it runs the standard Windows PC client rather than a console or cloud-streaming version. ASUS describes the Ally as a Windows handheld designed for PC game libraries: ASUS ROG Ally hardware comparison.
Bungie’s PC distribution and anti-cheat requirements therefore apply normally. The Ally is not specially certified by Bungie; its compatibility comes from using Windows and an approved launcher.
The operating-system catch: Windows supported, SteamOS and Proton not supported

Bungie’s Steam guide says the game must use Windows and warns that bypassing the SteamOS/Proton incompatibility may lead to a game ban. Installing Windows on another handheld can provide the supported environment; the brand of handheld is not what changes the rule.

Which ROG Ally models can run it?
Both original Ally models can run the Windows PC game:
- Ryzen Z1: six CPU cores, 12 threads and four graphics compute units.
- Ryzen Z1 Extreme: a substantially stronger graphics configuration.
Those specifications are from ASUS’s comparison. They establish a hardware distinction, not a Destiny 2-specific benchmark. Choose the Z1 Extreme if you want more headroom for higher settings or steadier performance; either model is compatible in Windows.

How to install Destiny 2 on a Windows ROG Ally
- Start the Ally in Windows.
- Install or update Steam, then sign in. The Steam version moved from Battle.net to Steam on October 1, 2019; Bungie’s current instructions are in its Steam installation guide.
- Open the Destiny 2 product page or your Steam library and select Install.
- Launch the game from Steam, not from its installation folder.
- When prompted, allow BattlEye to install.
- Sign in to the required Bungie account and review cross-save settings if you use multiple platforms.
Bungie also supports the Microsoft PC launcher and Epic Games Store. Whichever storefront you use, start the game through that storefront rather than directly opening the executable.
Controls and Windows navigation
During play, the Ally’s integrated sticks, buttons and triggers act as a PC gamepad. Installation, account sign-in and troubleshooting are more desktop-like: use the touchscreen, a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, or Armoury Crate SE’s Desktop Mode.

ASUS documents that the right stick can move the Windows pointer and the right bumper can act as a left click. If Steam’s desktop interface does not respond as expected, switch Armoury Crate SE’s Control Mode to Desktop Mode; Big Picture Mode is more controller-friendly. See ASUS’s ROG Ally control FAQ.
Practical starting settings
No supplied official source provides a current, Ally-specific Destiny 2 frame-rate result, so do not treat a universal 60, 90 or 1080p ultra target as guaranteed. Performance changes with the Z1 model, power profile, resolution, preset, drivers, thermals and background software.

- Try 1280×720 or 1600×900 if 1920×1080 is inconsistent.
- Begin with Low or Medium graphics and raise individual settings gradually.
- Use a higher Ally power mode when plugged in; lower modes usually require reduced settings.
- Cap the frame rate if steadier frame pacing, lower heat or longer battery life matters more than peak output.
- Test AMD upscaling or frame-generation features rather than assuming they improve latency or image quality in every situation.
Bungie’s current known-issues page for Year 8 (beginning July 15, 2025; page information cited as updated July 7, 2026) cautions that PCs using integrated graphics can have performance problems when the hardware does not meet the game’s minimum requirements. That is a reason to keep drivers and settings sensible, not evidence that every Ally has the same result.

Higher power modes give the APU more performance headroom but generally shorten battery life and increase heat and fan noise. Lower-power play is more portable but may need a lower resolution or preset. For long sessions or demanding multiplayer activities, a plugged-in Ally is the practical choice. The cited ASUS material does not establish a current Destiny 2-specific battery-life figure.

If Destiny 2 will not launch
- Confirm the Ally is booted into Windows, not SteamOS or another Linux environment.
- Start the game through Steam, the Microsoft PC launcher or Epic Games Store.
- Check that BattlEye was allowed to install and has not been removed or blocked.
- Update Windows, Armoury Crate SE, AMD graphics drivers and the launcher, then restart the Ally.
- Use the launcher’s file-verification or repair function.
- Disable third-party overlays and monitoring tools one at a time, then retest.
- If settings appear corrupted, close the game and delete
CVARS.xmlfromUsersUSER_NAMEAppdataRoamingBungieDestinyPCprefs. Bungie says the game will create a fresh file, but custom settings will reset. Follow the Steam guide for the documented path. - Check Bungie’s service status and support notices before treating a wider outage as an Ally fault.
BattlEye errors and the PLUOT message
BattlEye installs with a game update and must be permitted for normal play. Bungie’s BattlEye support guide says denying or uninstalling it prevents play, while launching the executable directly can produce a PLUOT error. Relaunch through the storefront, allow BattlEye, and repair or reinstall the game if its files are missing.
Overlays, recording and monitoring software
Not every overlay feature is compatible with the PC client. Bungie says OBS and XSplit Game Capture modes are unsupported; Screen Capture and Window Capture can work in windowed or borderless modes. Windows Game Bar is incompatible with Exclusive Fullscreen but works in windowed modes, and some Discord visual overlays and statistics overlays may conflict. Common applications can be permitted while a particular capture or overlay mode still fails. See Bungie’s feature-compatibility guidance. Armoury Crate SE, AMD Software and performance monitors should be disabled individually when diagnosing a crash or failed launch.
Is the ROG Ally a good way to play?
It is a sensible choice if you want local, portable PC play and accept Windows maintenance, variable performance, battery limits and occasional desktop interaction. The built-in controls suit gameplay, while text entry, account authentication and troubleshooting are easier with the touchscreen or external peripherals. The Z1 Extreme is the better performance-oriented model, but upgrading is not required merely to achieve Windows compatibility.
It is a poorer fit if you specifically want a console-like SteamOS experience, maximum battery life, high-resolution high-refresh play or a device that requires no driver, launcher or overlay management.

Yes: Destiny 2 runs on an ASUS ROG Ally running Windows. Install it through an approved launcher, allow BattlEye, and tune resolution and power for your model. There is no supported SteamOS/Proton route, so a Linux installation on the Ally is not equivalent to the Windows setup.
