How to Fix a PS5 Stuck on the “Welcome Back to PlayStation” Screen

A PS5 stuck on the Welcome Back to PlayStation screen may have a controller, display, network, or software problem. Try non-destructive checks and Safe Mode repairs before resetting.

If your PS5 is stuck at “Welcome Back to PlayStation,” first check whether the DualSense is communicating with the console. Then work through a full shutdown, controller re-pairing, display and network checks, and Safe Mode repairs—in that order. The screen is a symptom, not a single Sony error with one guaranteed fix, so avoid resetting the console until you have tried the non-destructive steps.

The menu paths below reflect PlayStation’s U.S. support guidance and PS5 system software/UI as checked August 18, 2026. Wording can vary slightly by software version, console model, and language.

Identify what is actually stuck

“Welcome Back to PlayStation” can refer to the user-selection screen, a pause after choosing a profile, a prompt to connect a controller by USB, or an image that looks frozen because video output has failed. The screen alone does not establish whether the cause is the controller, network, display, system software, storage, or hardware.

Before changing anything, note what the console does:

  • Vertical Stand sold seperately
  • Can you move the selection, and does pressing the PS button open Control Center?
  • Does the controller light up, and does the PS5 respond to its physical power button?
  • Is the picture a normal, visible Welcome screen, or is it black, blank, flickering, or distorted?
  • Can you enter Safe Mode? Does the problem affect every profile or only one?
  • Did it begin after an update, power interruption, Rest Mode, router change, or pairing the controller with another device?

These clues help choose a branch below; none on its own proves a particular fault.

Start with the low-risk checks

Give startup a moment, then shut down fully

If the console appears to be installing or updating system software, do not unplug it or interrupt the process. Sony warns that interrupting installation can damage the console, and advises against installing system software immediately before or after a power outage. See Sony’s PS5 system software guidance.

  1. If the screen remains unresponsive, press and hold the PS5’s physical power button for about three seconds to turn it off. If it does not shut down, keep holding the button until it powers off.
  2. Wait until the power indicator is completely off. Disconnect unnecessary USB accessories and external storage.
  3. Only after the PS5 is fully off, unplug its power cable. Wait several minutes, reconnect it—preferably directly to a wall outlet—and start the console.

Removing power is a troubleshooting measure after a complete shutdown, not a routine way to turn off the PS5.

Reconnect the DualSense with a data-capable cable

A controller may charge without carrying the data needed to pair with the PS5. Connect it directly to the console with the included cable or another known data-capable USB cable, try a different USB port, and press the PS button. Sony’s controller pairing guidance uses a USB connection and the PS button.

If it still does not respond, turn off the PS5, disconnect the controller, and press the small reset button on the back of the DualSense with a pin or similar tool for at least five seconds. Reconnect it by USB and press the PS button. Sony’s DualSense troubleshooting steps describe this reset and reconnection. If possible, test a second known-working controller before buying a replacement. A controller that works with a computer or another device has not necessarily paired successfully with the PS5.

If a controller responds in Safe Mode but not after normal startup, that points toward a problem in the normal software environment, but it does not identify the cause by itself. A DualShock 4 is not a universal substitute for navigating PS5 software; it can be used with the PS5 for supported PS4 games.

Rule out a display problem

Use this branch if the image is black, missing, flickering, or distorted, or if the console responds but the picture seems frozen. If the normal Welcome screen is clearly visible and the interface alone will not accept input, prioritize the controller and software checks instead.

  • Reseat the HDMI cable at both ends and try another HDMI input on the display.
  • Temporarily remove an AV receiver, HDMI switch, capture card, or soundbar from the connection.
  • Try another HDMI cable or, if available, another TV or monitor.
  • If you can enter Safe Mode, choose Change Video Output. Its Change Resolution and Change HDCP Mode options can help with blank-screen and display problems.

Sony lists these options in its PS5 Safe Mode guide.

Check PSN and the network if the freeze follows profile selection

If the console hangs only after you select a profile, or displays a network, sign-in, or server message, test connectivity before changing the profile. A network or account-initialization problem is one possibility—not a diagnosis.

  1. Check the live PlayStation service status; it can change, so do not assume service is available or down based on an old report.
  2. Restart the PS5 and, if the issue continues, restart the modem and router.
  3. If you can, connect the console temporarily by Ethernet. A different network, such as a phone hotspot, can be a diagnostic comparison, not a guaranteed fix.
  4. If the PS5 reaches Home, review its connection at Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection.

Sony’s connection-error guidance recommends checking service status and restarting the console and router for potentially temporary connection problems. A hotspot working would suggest investigating the home network, but would not prove the console is otherwise healthy. If the freeze is identical on several networks, the home router becomes a less likely explanation. If only one profile is affected, do not delete it as an early fix; that can create account, local-save, and settings complications.

Enter Safe Mode

  1. Turn off the PS5 by holding the physical power button for about three seconds.
  2. Once it is fully off, press and hold the power button again. Release it after the second beep: the first sounds when you press the button and the second comes roughly seven seconds later.
  3. Connect the controller to the console with a USB cable and press the PS button.

These steps and the available options are listed in Sony’s Safe Mode instructions.

If Safe Mode does not appear, confirm the PS5 is fully off rather than in Rest Mode; try another data-capable USB cable and port; reset the DualSense; disconnect external USB storage and accessories; and test another HDMI cable, display input, or screen. If it still will not load, move to the repair guidance below rather than repeatedly interrupting startup.

Try Safe Mode repairs in order

Safe Mode is useful for startup, storage, display, and system-software problems. Begin with the options that preserve data and leave resets until you have exhausted them.

Safe Mode option When to use it Data impact
Restart PS5 First attempt after entering Safe Mode; exits to normal startup. Does not intentionally erase user data.
Repair Console Storage Startup or storage problems; Sony says to use it when the console does not start properly. Sony says it does not erase data.
Clear System Software Cache System-feature problems or performance drops. A lower-risk troubleshooting step than resetting; Sony’s Safe Mode guide does not describe it as a user-data reset.
Rebuild Database Scans the drive and creates a new content database; may help system-feature problems or incorrect game icons. Not a system-software reinstall. It is not a guaranteed fix for an account, network, or damaged-storage problem.
Update System Software Use when the software may need an update or an update through normal startup is not possible. Updates software; do not interrupt installation.
Restore Default Settings Settings seem corrupted and the non-destructive repairs have not helped. Preserves users and game data, but changes settings.
Reset PS5 Last-resort reset after considering backups and other options. Deletes all user data.
Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) Last resort when system software must be reinstalled. Deletes all user data and removes the PS5 system software.

Sony documents the Safe Mode options and their intended uses in its Safe Mode guide. Let repairs finish; do not turn off the console while an operation is running. Rebuilding the database is not a way to repair a defective internal SSD.

Update system software from USB if needed

If the PS5 can get online, use its direct Safe Mode update option. If that fails, Sony supports an update from a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT. The update and reinstallation use similarly named files but are different operations: the update does not reset the console, while reinstallation is destructive.

  1. Format a USB drive as FAT32 or exFAT and create folders named PS5 and, inside it, UPDATE.
  2. Download the official PS5 update file from Sony’s system software page, then save it in the UPDATE folder as PS5UPDATE.PUP. Sony specifies about 1.1 GB of free space for the update file.
  3. Connect the drive to the PS5 and enter Safe Mode.
  4. Select Update System Software > Update from USB Storage Device > OK.

The folder and file names must be in uppercase if the console does not recognize the file. Download update files only from Sony and follow its current instructions; Sony warns against using unofficial system software.

Restore settings without deleting games or saves

If you can reach Home, or after other Safe Mode repairs, use Settings > System > System Software > Reset Options > Restore Default Settings when a configuration problem seems plausible. Sony says this restores settings such as visual and audio choices without affecting users or game data. It is not the same as resetting the console: Reset PS5 deletes user data. See Sony’s explanation of restoring default settings.

Reserve resets and reinstallation for last

Reset PS5

Reset PS5 restores the console to its original state and deletes all user data. Before choosing it, consider whether local saved data is backed up, whether cloud saves are available to you, whether you can sign back into your account, and whether you can reinstall your games and apps. Do not treat this as an early equivalent of Restore Default Settings.

Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software)

This option also deletes all user data and removes the PS5 system software. Sony’s USB reinstallation process uses a FAT32- or exFAT-formatted drive with the folder structure and filename PS5/UPDATE/PS5UPDATE.PUP; its guide specifies about 1.2 GB of free space for the reinstallation file. Download the correct reinstallation file and follow the current steps on Sony’s system software page. Back up first if you can. Reinstalling cannot repair a defective storage device, motherboard, power supply, or HDMI port.

Choose the next step from what you observe

What you see Category to investigate First action Data risk Escalate when
Welcome screen is visible, but controller does not respond Controller pairing, cable, port, or normal-startup software Try a data-capable USB cable and another port; reset the DualSense; test a second controller. None for these checks. No controller works in Safe Mode, or multiple known-good cables and controllers fail.
Controller works in Safe Mode but not during normal startup Possible normal-boot software or database problem; this is an inference, not a confirmed diagnosis. Restart, Repair Console Storage, clear cache, rebuild database, then update software. These steps precede destructive resets; back up before any reset. Non-destructive repairs fail or the issue returns after reinstallation.
Black, blank, flickering, or distorted image HDMI path, display, or video output Reseat or swap cable, try another input/display, remove intermediary equipment; use Safe Mode > Change Video Output. None for display checks. Safe Mode output remains absent across known-good cables and displays.
Freeze starts only after selecting a profile or showing a network message Network/service status or profile initialization Check PSN status, restart router and PS5, then compare Ethernet or another network. None for network tests; avoid deleting the profile. It freezes across networks or remains after software repairs.
Safe Mode will not load Controller, HDMI path, startup, or hardware Confirm full shutdown; try another cable/port, reset controller, disconnect accessories, test another display. None for these checks. Safe Mode still cannot be reached after those checks.

When to stop and contact PlayStation Repairs

Use Sony’s PlayStation support and repair entry point if Safe Mode remains inaccessible after checking power state, cable, controller, accessories, and display; if several known-good controllers and cables fail; or if HDMI output is absent across multiple displays. Stop further software manipulation if the PS5 shuts off repeatedly, overheats, makes abnormal noises, freezes during a repair or update, or the problem returns after system software reinstallation. Liquid exposure, a drop, or a power surge also warrants professional assessment. Repair availability, warranty eligibility, timing, and cost depend on country, model, and warranty status.
