The usual causes are damaged Steam files, missing legacy runtime components, graphics-driver or overlay conflicts, fullscreen initialization failures, and GPU timeouts.
Start with the low-risk steps, then use the error-specific section that matches what you see. Do not download individual DLL files or change Windows registry timeout settings unless every safer diagnostic has failed.
Quick fixes to try first
- Restart Windows, then fully exit and reopen Steam.
- Install pending Windows updates.
- Update your NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel graphics driver. If the crash began immediately after a driver update, test a rollback instead.
- Temporarily disable Steam, Discord, NVIDIA/AMD, Xbox Game Bar, MSI Afterburner/RivaTuner, recording, RGB, hardware-monitoring, and aggressive antivirus overlays.
- Verify the game files in Steam.
- Run the DirectX and Visual C++ installers included with the game.
- Remove existing Steam launch options. If you get a black screen or immediate fatal error, test
-windowed. - Return GPU overclocks and undervolts to stock and confirm that the Windows paging file is enabled.
Valve’s launch guidance also prioritizes current Windows and drivers, file verification, disabled nonessential software, and secondary installers: Steam launch troubleshooting and Steam prerequisite guidance.
Check the PC requirements and Windows version
The Steam listing gives these requirements:

See the Steam store page for the published list. The Steam client has required Windows 10 or later since January 1, 2024, so Windows 10 or 11 is the practical baseline for a current Steam installation even though Windows 7 appears in the game listing. Windows 8.1 is likewise obsolete. Compatibility mode is an experiment, not a substitute for upgrading.

A system barely meeting the numbers can still struggle, particularly with integrated graphics, older laptop GPUs, limited memory, heat, or a disabled paging file. On a laptop, install the manufacturer’s graphics driver if a generic driver breaks hybrid-GPU switching, and make sure Steam uses the dedicated GPU when one is available.
Verify ENDER LILIES’ Steam files
- Open Steam and go to Library.
- Right-click ENDER LILIES: Quietus of the Knights and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the check to finish, restart Steam, and launch the game.
Steam’s labels can vary slightly by client version. Verification replaces missing or damaged game files; it does not repair a graphics driver, Windows component, overlay conflict, or corrupted user configuration. Reinstall only after the steps below fail.
Install missing DirectX or Visual C++ components
If Windows reports “The following components are required to run the game: DirectX Runtime,” having DirectX 12 listed in system information does not guarantee that every older, side-by-side library used by a DirectX 11-era game is present.
- In Steam, right-click the game and select Manage → Browse local files.
- Look for folders named
_CommonRedist,Engine,Extras, or similar. - Run the included DirectX and Visual C++ installers and allow them to repair or install components.
- Restart Windows and try the game again.
If an included installer is missing or fails, use Microsoft’s official packages: DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer and Visual C++ Redistributable latest supported downloads. Never obtain DLL files from random download sites, cracked executables, or “fix packs.”

Disable overlays and reset GPU settings
Temporarily turn off Steam Overlay, Discord Overlay, NVIDIA App/GeForce overlay, AMD Software overlay, Xbox Game Bar, screen recorders, MSI Afterburner/RivaTuner, RGB and hardware-monitoring utilities, and overclocking or undervolting tools. If the game launches, re-enable programs one at a time to identify the conflict; this is a diagnostic test, not a permanent requirement.
Use official driver sources only: NVIDIA driver downloads, AMD Drivers and Support, or Intel Driver & Support Assistant. Update an old driver, but roll back when the problem started with a specific new release. A clean installation can help when ordinary updating does not.
Fix a black screen or immediate Unreal Engine fatal error
Test windowed mode before changing files or the registry. In Steam, right-click the game, choose Properties, stay on General, enter -windowed under Launch Options, close the window, and launch.
A Steam Community report says this resolved one fatal-error case, but it is an anecdotal, reversible workaround rather than an official fix: fatal-error discussion. It can bypass fullscreen, resolution, refresh-rate, or corrupted display settings. If it works, select a conservative monitor-matching resolution in the game, disable unusual HDR or refresh-rate settings if offered, then remove -windowed and test fullscreen again. Do not assume arbitrary flags such as -dx11 are supported for this title.

Fix “D3D device being lost” and 0x887A0006 HUNG
“Unreal Engine is exiting due to D3D device being lost” means the game lost communication with the graphics device or its driver. Reports for this game associate it with effects or boss encounters, NVIDIA hardware, GPU load, and systems with paging-file changes, but they do not prove one universal cause: 2021 report and 2024 report.
- Return GPU core and memory clocks, undervolts, and overclocks to stock.
- Update the driver, or roll back if the issue follows a recent update.
- Disable every overlay and recorder.
- Lower resolution and graphics settings and close other GPU-heavy applications.
- Check temperatures, power connections, and laptop power mode.
- In Windows virtual-memory settings, enable a system-managed paging file.
- Verify files, reboot, and retest.
A paging file is not VRAM and cannot guarantee a fix, but disabling virtual memory can worsen stability for some games.
Why registry TDR edits are a last resort
Community posts suggest changing TdrDelay, TdrLevel, or TdrDebugMode under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlGraphicsDrivers, including a suggested TdrDelay value of 10. These are user theories, not official ENDER LILIES instructions. Registry changes can hide an overheating GPU, unstable overclock, failing driver, or defective hardware and can leave Windows or the display unresponsive longer.
Do not use them as a universal fix. If you nevertheless perform an advanced experiment, create a restore point, export the relevant key first, change one value only, and revert or remove it if it does not help. Never apply an unidentified registry script or disable timeout detection broadly.

If the game crashes in one room, boss fight, or effect
- Verify the files.
- Use stock GPU settings, disable overlays, and lower resolution or graphics options.
- Confirm the system-managed paging file is enabled.
- Try windowed mode and reproduce with other applications closed.
- Write down the exact room, boss, action, visual effect, and error text.
A repeatable crash in one scene can be title-specific and may require a developer fix rather than another generic reinstall.

The PC release is a Windows title; running it through Proton is a separate compatibility case. Try the current recommended Proton version or Proton Experimental, verify files, remove custom launch options, and test without mods or third-party overlays. Cutscene, controller, and rendering problems may be Proton-specific. Do not apply Windows registry instructions on SteamOS. Last resort: reinstall and contact support
Reinstalling can repair a badly damaged installation or rerun prerequisites, but it will not fix an unsupported OS, driver failure, overheating, or an overlay conflict. Before deleting local folders, check how your saves and configuration are stored and whether Steam Cloud is enabled.
For a support request, include the exact error, when it occurs, reproducible location or action, CPU, GPU, RAM, Windows version, graphics-driver version, installation drive (SSD or hard drive), whether stock GPU settings are in use, and which steps changed the behavior. Frequently Asked Questions
Does DirectX 12 automatically include the DirectX files this game needs?
Not necessarily. Windows can have DirectX 12 while an older side-by-side runtime component required by the game is absent. Run the bundled installer or Microsoft’s official DirectX End-User Runtime package.
Is the -windowed launch option safe?
It is a low-risk, reversible diagnostic. Remove it after testing and restore your normal display settings if fullscreen works.
Should I change TdrDelay for a D3D crash?
Only as a documented last-resort experiment after drivers, stock GPU settings, overlays, temperatures, paging-file settings, and files have been checked. Back up the registry first; community reports are not an official fix.
Can compatibility mode make Windows 7 or 8.1 reliable?
There is no guarantee. The Steam client’s current practical baseline is Windows 10 or later, so upgrading the operating system is more dependable.
Will reinstalling the game delete my saves?
Not automatically in every setup, but local saves or configuration may be outside the game files. Check Steam Cloud and back up local data before manually deleting folders.
