Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIf Twitch won’t open, crashes, or gets stuck loading on your Xbox Series X|S, work through these fixes in order: check service status, fully restart the console and router, install updates, reinstall Twitch, then test the network or relink your account. This sequence starts with the least disruptive steps and saves a console reset for last.
If Twitch opens but you can’t go live, that’s a different problem: Twitch describes its Xbox app as a viewing app, while Xbox’s built-in broadcasting feature handles streaming to Twitch. See Twitch’s Xbox broadcasting guidance.
Identify what is failing
The symptom can point to an app, console, network, or account problem. Use this table to choose where to start; if you’re unsure, follow the five fixes in order.
| What happens | Likely area | Best first step |
|---|---|---|
| Twitch does nothing when selected | Stuck app process, console state, or service issue | Check service status, then fully restart the Xbox |
| The app opens, then closes | App installation or outdated software | Update Twitch and Xbox; reinstall Twitch if needed |
| A black, purple, or loading screen never clears | Service, network, or app installation | Check status and network, then reinstall if those are working |
| Other apps also fail | Xbox, Microsoft Store, or network problem | Restart the console and test the network |
| Twitch works on your phone but not Xbox | Console-specific app or network issue | Update or reinstall Twitch; test another network |
| The app opens but sign-in loops or fails | Twitch authentication or account linking | Relink the account and check Twitch account access |
| You can watch, but cannot broadcast | Xbox’s streaming feature, network, or account settings | Use the broadcasting guidance below |
1. Check Twitch and Xbox service status
Before changing console settings, check Twitch’s live status page and Xbox service status. If either reports an incident, wait for service to recover and try again rather than repeatedly reinstalling or resetting the console.

Also open another online app, such as YouTube or the Microsoft Store. If several services fail, the cause may be Xbox or network connectivity rather than Twitch. A status page showing normal operation doesn’t rule out a regional or account-specific issue.
2. Fully restart the Xbox and router
Closing Twitch and reopening it may leave a stuck process or temporary console state in place. A full shutdown refreshes the console without deleting games, apps, or accounts.
- Press the Xbox button on the controller.
- Select Profile & system → Power → Turn off console. Menu wording can vary by dashboard version.
- Wait until the Xbox is fully off, then unplug its power cable for about 30 seconds.
- Restart the modem or router according to its manufacturer’s instructions. Wait for it to reconnect to the internet.
- Reconnect the Xbox, turn it on, and open Twitch.
If the console is unresponsive, hold its physical power button until it shuts down, then wait and turn it on again. Use that forced shutdown only when the normal menu restart is unavailable.
3. Install Xbox and Twitch updates
Check for an Xbox system update
On the console, press the Xbox button and go to Profile & system → Settings → System → Updates. Install any available update and restart. Labels and paths can differ slightly by dashboard version and region; the Xbox support hub provides current, localized guidance.

Check for a Twitch app update
Open My games & apps and look in the updates area for a pending Twitch update. Install it, then try launching the app again. If the update fails, check that the console has enough free storage and whether the Microsoft Store opens and can install other apps. A Store problem affecting multiple apps is not specific to Twitch.
4. Reinstall Twitch
If the app is still closing or stuck after the status, restart, and update checks, its installed files may be damaged. Reinstalling replaces them with the currently available version, though it is not a guaranteed fix.
- In My games & apps, highlight Twitch and press the controller’s Menu button.
- Select Manage app and game, then Uninstall all and confirm.
- Restart the Xbox.
- Open the Microsoft Store, search for Twitch, and install it again.
- Launch Twitch and sign in.
Uninstalling Twitch does not remove your Xbox games or saved game progress, but you may need to sign in again and restore app preferences. If the reinstall won’t complete, check free storage, Xbox and Store service status, and whether another free app installs. If multiple apps cannot install or launch, contact Xbox Support.
5. Test the network or relink your Twitch account
If Twitch loads but videos or the app do not connect
Run the Xbox connection tests at Settings → General → Network settings. The names may vary slightly; look for Test network connection and, if available, the multiplayer or NAT test. A connected status by itself doesn’t prove the console can reach every service.

- Try Ethernet if you’re using Wi-Fi.
- When practical, test another network, such as a mobile hotspot. If Twitch works there, investigate the original router, filtering, or internet connection.
- Temporarily disable a VPN, parental-control filter, or custom DNS filtering if you use one.
- Check whether other devices on the same network can reach Twitch.
Twitch’s connectivity troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the connection and using Ethernet where possible. NAT issues are more directly associated with multiplayer, party chat, or broadcasting than simply opening a viewing app, so don’t assume a particular NAT result is the cause. Changing DNS is an optional advanced test, not a universal fix.
If the app opens but sign-in or linking fails
A repeated code prompt or authorization error points more toward authentication than an app-launch failure. Sign in to the correct Twitch account in a browser, review its connected accounts, and remove an Xbox connection only if it appears stale or duplicated. Then restart the console, open Twitch, and complete linking again, including any verification prompt.
If a code doesn’t arrive or you no longer have access to the account’s email or phone, use Twitch’s account-access and login guide to resolve the recovery issue. Account or verification trouble is separate from a crash before the app reaches sign-in.

Watching in the Twitch app and broadcasting Xbox gameplay are separate functions. Twitch says Xbox broadcasting is handled through Xbox’s native feature. To start, use Xbox button → Capture & Share → Live streaming, then follow the prompts; menu labels may vary.

For a broadcast failure, check Xbox service status, network stability and upload connectivity, microphone and party-chat permissions, privacy and online-safety settings, and account linking. Twitch says a streaming suspension prevents going live and may last from 24 hours to 30 days; that restriction concerns broadcasting and does not by itself explain an app crash. See Twitch’s streaming troubleshooting page and its Xbox broadcasting instructions.
Last resort: reset the console while keeping games and apps
Only consider a console reset after service checks, restart, updates, reinstalling Twitch, and network or account troubleshooting. The typical path is Settings → System → Console info → Reset console → Reset and keep my games & apps. This preserves installed games and apps, but you may need to sign in again and reconfigure settings. Verify any important data and contact Xbox Support first if you’re unsure about proceeding.
Stop before resetting if the issue affects several apps, the Store cannot install software, or an outage is reported: those signs point beyond Twitch and may need Xbox Support. For a Twitch sign-in or account-recovery problem, use Twitch’s account-access guide instead.
