You can temporarily change a DualSense controller’s light-bar color from an iPhone with a third-party app, but Sony does not document an official way to choose and save a custom color. The color resets when the controller reconnects, so this is a short-lived effect—not a permanent PS5 setting.

What you need

  • A charged Sony DualSense controller. DualSense Edge pairing is similar, but the app’s compatibility with every Edge firmware version is not established.
  • An iPhone with Bluetooth enabled.
  • The third-party app PS5 Controller Trigger Test if you want to try the temporary color change. Its US App Store listing showed $2.99 on August 18, 2026; prices can vary by country and change.
  • The controller disconnected from the PS5 while you pair it with the iPhone.

The App Store listing advertises light-color control and other controller tests; it is a developer-described feature, not a Sony-certified setting.

Pair the DualSense with your iPhone

  1. Disconnect the controller from the PS5. If it keeps reconnecting to the console, turn the PS5 off while pairing.
  2. On the DualSense, press and hold PS + Create until the light bar flashes.
  3. On the iPhone, open Settings > Bluetooth and turn Bluetooth on.
  4. Tap DualSense Wireless Controller in the available-devices list. Apple documents this standard Bluetooth pairing process at Apple Support.

Try a temporary light-color change

  1. Open PS5 Controller Trigger Test after the DualSense is paired to the iPhone.
  2. Allow Bluetooth communication if iOS asks for permission.
  3. Use the app’s light-control interface to choose a color. The exact interface can vary by app version.
  4. Check the strip around the touchpad to see whether the command took effect.

The app listing’s developer response says the selected color returns to default when the controller reconnects. Use this as a brief demonstration or test, not as a way to set a lasting PS5 theme.

Why the color does not stay on PS5

The app sends a lighting command while the controller is connected to the iPhone; it does not create a permanent color profile for the PS5. When the controller reconnects, the color reverts, and the console or an individual game may control lighting during play. Sony documents player-assigned colors and brightness-related controls, but not a general custom RGB color picker in PS5 settings or its DualSense support material: Sony DualSense support.

Playstation 5 DualSense Wireless Controller - White (Renewed)
  • Haptic feedback - Feel physically responsive feedback to your in-game actions with dual actuators which replace traditional rumble motors. In your hands, these dynamic vibrations can simulate the feeling of everything from environments to the recoil of different weapons. .Operating temperature : 41 °F to 95 °F (5 °C to 35 °C)
  • Adaptive triggers - Experience varying levels of force and tension as you interact with your in-game gear and environments. From pulling back an increasingly tight bowstring to hitting the brakes on a speeding car, feel physically connected to your on-screen actions.
  • Built-in microphone and headset jack - Chat with friends online using the built-in microphone or by connecting a headset to the 3.5mm jack. Easily switch voice capture on and off at a moment’s notice with the dedicated mute button. Internet and account for PlayStation Network required.
  • DualSense Controller PS5 and PC compatible. Not compatible with PS4.
  • PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.

Reconnect the controller to the PS5

  1. Close the test app.
  2. Disconnect the DualSense from the iPhone. You can use Settings > Bluetooth, tap the information control beside the controller, then choose Forget This Device; turning Bluetooth off temporarily is another option.
  3. Connect the controller to the PS5 with a USB cable and press the PS button.

Sony supports pairing a DualSense with up to four devices. The slot shortcuts are PS + Triangle for slot 1, PS + Circle for slot 2, PS + Cross for slot 3, and PS + Square for slot 4. They select a paired-device slot; they do not choose a light-bar color. See Sony’s Bluetooth pairing instructions.

What the different controller lights mean

  • Light bar: The translucent strip surrounding the touchpad. This is the part the third-party app advertises changing.
  • Player indicators: The small white lights near the touchpad. Their pattern indicates player or connection-slot status; it is not a custom RGB color selection.
  • Mute indicator: The orange light on the mute button, which reflects microphone status rather than a chosen lighting color.

The PS5 console’s own status light is separate from all three controller indicators; these instructions change neither the console light nor its status.

What the official PlayStation options can and cannot do

PS5 settings and PlayStation Accessories

Sony’s documented controller options include brightness-related controls, firmware support and configuration features, not a setting to save an arbitrary light-bar color. The PlayStation Accessories documentation covers supported configuration and brightness options.

PlayStation App and PS Remote Play

Neither the PlayStation App nor PS Remote Play is documented as a custom light-color control. Remote Play streams gameplay to a supported mobile device; it does not provide a permanent lighting profile for the controller.

DualSense Edge

The same official-color limitation applies to DualSense Edge: Sony’s Edge support information covers connection and supported settings, not custom RGB selection from an iPhone. Do not assume the third-party test app behaves identically with every Edge firmware version.

Troubleshoot pairing and color changes

The iPhone cannot find the controller

  • Make sure the controller is not still connected to the PS5 or another device.
  • Confirm Bluetooth is on, then hold PS + Create until the light bar flashes.
  • Charge the controller and remove an old controller entry from iPhone Bluetooth before trying again.
  • If pairing remains unreliable, reset the controller with the small reset button on its rear and retry. For persistent connection problems, use Sony’s support guidance.

The app connects but the color does not change

Compatibility can depend on the controller revision, firmware and app version; support across every DualSense and DualSense Edge combination is not established. Check that the app has Bluetooth access and that another device has not taken over the controller. The app’s light control should not be assumed to change the player indicators.

The PS5 shows a different color after reconnecting

That can be normal: the iPhone change is temporary, while the console can assign player colors and games can drive lighting effects. Sony’s pairing and indicator behavior is described in its DualSense support material.

Other ways to change the appearance

  • Reduce brightness: Use supported controller settings if you want less light rather than a different hue.
  • Cosmetic filters or shells: These may tint the light’s appearance without changing the controller’s lighting command. Avoid internal modifications or accessories that obstruct the light or fit poorly.
  • Another controller: Some specialty controllers advertise their own lighting controls, but compatibility with PS5, haptics, adaptive triggers and manufacturer apps varies. Their features do not apply to a standard Sony DualSense. The Haute42 Elite app, for example, is aimed at compatible Haute42 hardware rather than serving as a general DualSense lighting app.
