There is no single fix for every Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous – Enhanced Edition crash on Windows. The reliable approach is to establish a clean, unmodded baseline, then test files, overlays, local settings, displays, drivers, saves, and hardware in that order. Start with the checklist below and stop when the symptom disappears.
Quick fix checklist
- Restart Windows completely.
- Update Windows and your graphics driver; roll back if the crash began immediately after a driver update. Steam recommends current operating-system and driver updates for launch failures (Steam Support).
- Verify the installation through Steam or GOG Galaxy.
- Disable every overlay and hardware-monitoring utility.
- Disable all mods and mod loaders.
- Rename the local Owlcat profile after backing up saves and personal files.
- Test with one monitor, then try the conditional
-monitor Nlaunch option. - Enable Owlcat logging and submit the requested files if the crash remains.
Identify when the crash happens
| Symptom | Prioritize these checks |
|---|---|
| Closes immediately after Play | Mods, overlays, damaged files, local settings, multiple monitors |
| Crashes at the splash screen | Overlays, display configuration, graphics driver, Unity settings |
| Crashes at 90–99% loading | Driver, cache/configuration, modded or damaged save |
| Only one save crashes | Removed/outdated mod, incompatible or damaged save |
| Crashes after changing resolution or display mode | Reset local settings; try windowed or borderless mode |
| Crashes after several minutes | Temperatures, overclock/undervolt, RAM, driver, hardware stability |
| Only crashes with mods | Disable everything and isolate by binary search |
| GOG Galaxy starts then closes | Disable the GOG overlay and restart Galaxy |
| Wrong display or early crash with multiple monitors | Disconnect extras and test -monitor N |
Fix launch and splash-screen crashes
Verify the game files
On Steam, open Library, right-click the game, choose Properties, open Installed Files, and select the file-verification option (currently labeled Verify integrity of game files). Let it finish, restart Steam, and launch again. Verification repairs missing or damaged installation files; it does not remove bad settings, mods, overlays, saves, or driver problems.
On GOG, open the game in Galaxy and use Manage installation (or the equivalent repair/verification command). Follow GOG’s current verification instructions rather than applying Steam’s menus (GOG verification guidance).
Disable injected software
Turn off Steam Overlay, GOG Galaxy Overlay, Discord Overlay, NVIDIA or AMD overlays, Xbox Game Bar, MSI Afterburner/RivaTuner Statistics Server, capture tools, RGB or audio enhancers, hardware monitors, and antivirus game-mode or injection features. GOG’s developer guidance specifically recommends disabling its overlay for splash-screen crashes (GOG developer forum). Re-enable utilities one at a time after the game is stable so the conflicting component is identifiable.

Remove mods before judging the vanilla game
Close the game, disable every Unity Mod Manager, ModFinder, or other mod, and temporarily rename or remove the loader files if the manager still injects them. Test a new game or a definitely vanilla save without overwriting your original modded saves.
If vanilla works, restore mods gradually. A binary search is fastest: disable half, test, keep the half containing the failure, and repeat. A mod may become incompatible after a game update, and two individually functional mods can conflict. Removing a mod from an existing save can itself prevent that save from loading; the modding community documents this isolation method and useful logs (MewsiferConsole guide).
Reset display settings and test one monitor
Disconnect additional monitors temporarily, use consistent Windows scaling, and avoid changing display assignment while the game is running. If you can reach settings, try windowed or borderless mode and the monitor’s default refresh rate.
Older Owlcat/GOG guidance describes a conditional Unity launch issue when monitors use different DPI or resolutions. In Steam, open Properties → General → Launch Options and test -monitor 1, then -monitor 2 if necessary. Use the equivalent GOG launch-argument field. The number is a system-dependent monitor index; this is a display-selection test, not a performance command (forum guidance).
Fix crashes while loading a save
- Start a new game. If it works, the installation and basic launch path are probably functional.
- Try an older save. Do not overwrite backup saves during testing.
- Check whether the failing save was created with mods or after a major game update.
- Restore a removed mod only when you know the save requires it, then test without saving over the original.
A save-specific crash can indicate a missing mod, an incompatible mod state, or save corruption. Owlcat reports are easier to diagnose when you identify whether a clean new game works and provide the reproducing save.

Reset local settings without losing saves
Close the game and launcher. Back up Saved Games, portraits, screenshots, and any custom files you recognize. The profile is normally located at:
%USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalLowOwlcat GamesPathfinder Wrath Of The Righteous
Rename that folder to Pathfinder Wrath Of The Righteous.backup, then launch. Renaming preserves evidence and allows recovery. If the clean profile works, close the game and copy back only saves, portraits, and screenshots—not old configuration, cache, or mod files. Cloud saves can overwrite a good copy, so pause synchronization or preserve the cloud version before testing a broken save.
Fix crashes during gameplay
- Watch GPU and CPU temperatures and power behavior.
- Remove overclocks and undervolts temporarily; test RAM stability if other applications also fail.
- Perform a normal driver update through NVIDIA App, AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition, or Intel Driver & Support Assistant. Use a clean reinstall only if a normal update fails; consider a rollback when the crash began immediately after a new driver.
- Disable overlays and background utilities again, then check Windows Event Viewer for the timestamp.
- If unrelated demanding games also crash or Windows reports hardware errors, investigate system stability rather than replacing hardware based on this game alone. A
UnityPlayer.dllfault identifies where an error surfaced, not necessarily its root cause.
Steam launch options and logging
For extra diagnostics, right-click the game in Steam, choose Properties, find Launch Options under General, enter logging, launch, and reproduce the crash. Remove the option afterward if desired. Owlcat documents this procedure and requests logs, saves, and crash dumps (Owlcat instructions).
GOG-specific notes
Test with the GOG overlay disabled and Galaxy restarted before attempting anything destructive. An old developer post mentions deleting Galaxy64.dll only when overlay disabling fails. Treat this as a last-resort, GOG-only workaround: back up the file first and verify the installation afterward. It can affect Galaxy integration and is not a general fix (GOG developer forum).
When verification and reinstalling do not help
Verification and a reinstall may leave local profiles, caches, mod loaders, saves, and configuration files untouched. Reinstall only after testing files, overlays, mods, the renamed profile, displays, and drivers. Preserve backups, then remove leftover local data deliberately rather than assuming uninstall deleted it.
Registry edits under HKEY_CURRENT_USERSOFTWAREOwlcat Games appear in old community advice, but they are unsupported by current Owlcat instructions. Avoid them unless you have a verified backup and understand registry recovery; they should not precede reversible tests.
