If a Steam Deck thumbstick moves while you are not touching it, try fixes in order: restart and update the Deck, check for debris, test and calibrate the stick, then consider replacement or support if the problem persists. A deadzone increase can hide mild drift, but it does not repair a worn sensor.
Confirm the Deck is registering real drift
Drift means the Deck registers movement while a thumbstick is at rest. You may see a character walk, a camera pan, a Desktop Mode cursor move, or menus scroll on their own. First check whether it happens in more than one game; if it is limited to one title, that game’s Steam Input layout or deadzone may be responsible.
To test the raw input in Game Mode, press the Steam button and open Settings → Controller → Calibration & Advanced Settings → Joysticks. Press Y to view the stick input without touching it. The labels and path can vary between SteamOS releases. A nonzero reading while untouched is useful evidence of a Deck-level input problem. (See iFixit’s Steam Deck joystick-drift troubleshooting guide.)
1. Restart the Deck and install updates
This is the fastest low-risk check. A restart can clear a temporary software or input issue, but it cannot restore a physically worn sensor.

- Save your game and close it.
- Hold the Steam button, choose Power, then select Restart.
- After the Deck reboots, open Steam → Settings → System and check for updates.
- Install any available update and restart again if prompted.
Menu wording may shift with SteamOS updates; look for the system update function if the labels differ. iFixit recommends restarting and checking for pending updates before attempting more involved fixes.
2. Inspect and clean around the stick
Dirt or debris can keep a stick from returning fully to center. Turn the Deck off, inspect the gap around the affected stick in good light, and wipe the exterior with a clean, slightly damp cloth. Move the stick slowly through its full range and note any rubbing, unusual resistance, or failure to spring back to center.
- Do not pour liquid into the opening or use household lubricants, oil, or silicone spray.
- Do not treat contact cleaner as a remedy for liquid damage.
- If the Deck was spilled on, stop repeatedly powering it on and seek repair advice; contact cleaner is not a substitute for liquid-damage inspection.
Optional advanced cleaning
Going deeper means opening the Deck and removing the thumbstick module. iFixit describes using residue-free electronics cleaner appropriate for electrical contacts, moving the stick through its directions, and checking for visible corrosion; suitable areas may be cleaned with isopropyl alcohol. This is not a quick exterior clean, and cleaning may help only temporarily if the resistive track is worn. Follow a model-appropriate repair guide, power the Deck down first, and remove the microSD card before opening it so the card is not caught or damaged during shell removal. See iFixit’s cleaning and drift guidance and its microSD removal warning.

3. Test, calibrate, and adjust the deadzone
Calibration attempts to correct the stick’s center and range readings. A deadzone instead tells the system to ignore a small area around center. These are different fixes: calibration may correct a bad center reading; a larger deadzone can make mild drift less noticeable, but may reduce precision for aiming and fine movement. Increase it gradually only until idle movement stops, then test the affected game. Deadzone settings can exist in the system test, a Steam Input layout, or an individual game, so a change in one place may not affect every game.
Try Game Mode testing first
- Press the Steam button and go to Settings → Controller → Calibration & Advanced Settings → Joysticks.
- Press Y to check the current input while the sticks are untouched.
- Use the on-screen deadzone control to test whether a modest increase stops the movement.
- Test precision in the game where you noticed drift; if only that game is affected, inspect its Steam Input layout and in-game settings.
There is no universal deadzone number: the right setting depends on the stick and the game’s controls. If the input moves well beyond the center area, increasing the deadzone may not help.
Run Desktop Mode calibration
If the normal calibration path does not resolve the issue, iFixit’s guide describes this command-line calibration procedure:

- Enter
thumbstick_caland press Enter. - When prompted, leave both sticks untouched and centered.
- When prompted to calibrate the full range, rotate each stick through a complete 360-degree circle twice.
- Return focus to Konsole, press Enter, and check for the success message.
See the full thumbstick calibration guide. Its warning about calibration not functioning in SteamOS 3.3 is historical; it does not establish that current releases have the same limitation. If the command fails, check for and install available SteamOS updates, then retry. If it still fails, use Steam Support or consider repair rather than relying on an unsuccessful calibration.
4. Replace the stick or contact Steam Support
Replacement is the durable next step when cleaning and calibration do not hold. Analog sticks use physical wipers and a resistive track; wear can produce increasingly incorrect readings. Persistent drift can also result from a loose or corroded connector, liquid damage, or a board-level fault, so a replacement stick is not guaranteed to fix every case. Consider replacement when drift returns immediately after calibration, cleaning helps only briefly, the stick feels loose or gritty, it will not spring back, input is intermittent, or acceptable play requires an uncomfortably large deadzone.

Check the replacement matches your model
LCD and OLED modules are not interchangeable by assumption. On an LCD Deck, the correct Type A or Type B stick matters for capacitive-touch functionality. To identify the LCD type, go to Settings → System and check the Steam Deck Controller ID: an ID beginning MEDA uses Type A; one beginning MHDA uses Type B. iFixit’s LCD left-stick listing describes the compatibility options. The iFixit OLED left-stick and OLED right-stick listings identify compatibility with 512GB and 1TB OLED models.
What the DIY repair involves
For someone experienced with small electronics repairs, this is a moderate disassembly job, not a soldering repair. iFixit estimates 20 minutes to 1 hour for an LCD thumbstick replacement and 30–45 minutes for its OLED replacement kits; these are guide estimates, not guaranteed completion times. Its listings showed $39.99 for the genuine LCD left-stick kit and the genuine OLED left- and right-stick kits during the August 16, 2026 research window. Price, stock, shipping, and kit contents can change. Check the current listing and confirm compatibility before buying.
- Shut down the Deck and remove the microSD card.
- Remove the rear shell and internal shield as required by the model-specific guide.
- Disconnect the battery before working on the stick.
- Release the thumbstick cable by lifting the ZIF connector’s locking flap; pull by the cable tab, not the cable itself. Use a spudger rather than a metal tool near connectors.
- Remove the module screws, install the matching replacement, and reassemble without pinching cables or resting the Deck’s weight on the new stick.
- Calibrate the replacement stick in software.
Follow a model-specific guide such as iFixit’s thumbstick repair instructions and its repair overview. If drift began after you opened the Deck, inspect that the cable is seated, the ZIF flap is closed, and the cable and contacts are undamaged; visible corrosion or pinching calls for more than a deadzone adjustment.

|---|---|
| Drift appears only in one game | Check that title’s Steam Input layout and in-game deadzone, then compare with another game. |
| Drift appears in the controller test | Inspect and clean externally, then calibrate and test a modest deadzone increase. |
| Drift returns after calibration | Plan a compatible module replacement or contact Steam Support. |
| Drift began after opening the Deck | Power down and inspect the stick cable and ZIF connector for seating, damage, or pinching. |
| Drift followed a spill | Stop repeated power-on experiments and seek repair assessment. |
| Touch sensing fails after an LCD replacement | Verify the replacement is the correct Type A or Type B module for the Deck. |
thumbstick_cal fails |
Install available updates and retry; if it still fails, use support or repair rather than treating deadzone as a hardware fix. |
Hall-effect sticks are another aftermarket category. They use magnets rather than the same physical contact method, but that does not guarantee perfect fit, correct touch or firmware behavior, or zero calibration work. Compatibility varies by LCD/OLED model; verify those details before considering a specific module.
Valve’s Steam Deck FAQ confirms its iFixit parts-and-repair-guide collaboration. For persistent drift, support or a compatible replacement is more appropriate than continually increasing the deadzone.
