Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →A Minecraft timeout means your game did not receive a usable response from the destination before the connection expired. The cause depends on what you are joining: one private server, every server, a LAN world, a Realm, or your own hosted server. Use the shortest diagnostic path below instead of changing router settings at random.
First identify your edition (Java or Bedrock), then check whether the failure affects one server or all multiplayer connections. If only one server fails, its address, port, uptime, version, firewall, or access settings are more likely than a problem with your game.
Choose the troubleshooting branch
| What is failing? | Most likely area | Start here |
|---|---|---|
| One public server | Address, port, uptime, version, whitelist, or server firewall | Ask the owner to verify the address, port, status, and version |
| Every server | Internet, account, VPN, firewall, DNS, NAT, or outage | Test another network and check official service status |
| LAN world | Different networks, isolation, Windows firewall, or network profile | Use the same local network and set a trusted Windows network to Private |
| Your self-hosted server | Server process, firewall, forwarding, public IP, CGNAT, or double NAT | Test locally, then from another LAN device and a phone hotspot |
| Realm | Account, invitation, subscription, world slot, or Minecraft services | Check status, sign-in, invitation, and Realm availability |
What the timeout message means
Connection timed out means the client could not establish a usable network path or received no response before the attempt expired. It is not proof that Minecraft as a whole is offline.
- Connection refused: the destination answered, but no service is accepting connections on that port.
- Unknown host or unable to resolve hostname: the address is mistyped or DNS cannot resolve it.
- Incompatible version: the client and server use incompatible releases, snapshots, loaders, or mods.
- Authentication, whitelist, or ban message: the server is reachable but access is denied.
- Realm-specific error: investigate the Realm, account, subscription, world slot, or Minecraft services.
Do these checks before advanced fixes
- Close Minecraft completely and reopen it, then restart the device.
- Sign out of the Microsoft account, restart Minecraft, and sign back in.
- Confirm that websites or another online game work.
- Pause downloads, streaming, cloud sync, VPNs, and other bandwidth-heavy software.
- Restart the router if the connection is unstable.
- Try Ethernet or a different network, such as a phone hotspot.
- Temporarily test with a VPN or third-party antivirus web filtering disabled.
- Update Minecraft and the launcher, but use the server’s required version rather than assuming newest is compatible.
- Ask another player whether they can join the same destination.
These steps follow the official Java multiplayer guidance at Minecraft Help. A hotspot working while home Wi-Fi fails points to the router, ISP, NAT, DNS, parental controls, or local security software. If every device on the home network fails, suspect the network or destination; if only one computer fails, suspect its firewall, VPN, DNS cache, or installation.

Check whether Minecraft services are down
Before changing ports, check the Mojang service-status page at help-mojang.com. It lists categories such as Minecraft.net, logins, multiplayer sessions, and account services. A green status does not prove that a private server is reachable, but simultaneous failures involving login, Realms, and several multiplayer services make a wider outage more plausible.
Java Edition: address, version, and firewall
Enter the exact address and port
In Minecraft: Java Edition, open Multiplayer → Direct Connection or Add Server. Enter the address exactly as supplied by the administrator. A custom port follows a colon, for example server.example.com:25570. The usual Java default is port 25565 when no other port is configured; it is not universal. The official server software is available at Minecraft’s Java server download page.
- Do not use a private address such as
192.168.x.xfrom outside the host’s home network. - Do not omit a required custom port or substitute a Bedrock port.
- Check whether a dynamic public IP has changed.
- Remove spaces or copied punctuation from the address.
Match the server’s release and mods
Use the exact released version requested by the owner. A newer client, snapshot, different mod loader, missing mod, extra mod, or different modpack build can prevent joining. In the launcher, open Installations and select the matching profile. For modded servers, use the owner’s precise loader and modpack instructions. Minecraft’s multiplayer guide explains version matching at How to play on a Minecraft server.
Test a server you own locally
- Confirm the server process has finished loading and inspect its console for errors.
- On the host computer, try
localhost. - From another device on the same LAN, try the host’s private address, such as
192.168.1.25:25565.
- Local join fails: investigate the process, bind address, port conflict, or local configuration.
- Host works but another LAN device fails: check the host firewall and network isolation.
- LAN works but internet friends fail: investigate forwarding, public IP, CGNAT, double NAT, or ISP restrictions.
Review Java server settings and Windows Firewall
For a typical Java server, leave server-ip= blank unless you have a specific reason to bind it. Ensure server-port= matches the port players use, then restart after editing server.properties. Do not set online-mode=false as a connectivity fix; it changes authentication and creates impersonation risks.

- Open Windows Security → Firewall & network protection → Allow an app through firewall.
- Allow the relevant Java runtime or server program on the appropriate private network.
- If hosting over the internet, create a narrow rule for the server port instead of disabling the firewall.
- Restart the server and test again.
Client-side outbound blocking affects joining; host-side inbound blocking affects friends joining. Router forwarding is needed only when exposing a home server beyond the LAN.
Bedrock Edition: port, account, and UDP checks
Use the administrator’s Bedrock port
Open Play → Servers → Add Server and enter the supplied name, address, and port. Microsoft’s Bedrock Dedicated Server guide lists default IPv4 port 19132 and IPv6 port 19133. These can be changed, and Bedrock uses UDP, so a TCP-only forwarding rule is insufficient. Do not automatically forward Java’s 25565 port.
Check Microsoft account and multiplayer permissions
- Sign in with the intended Microsoft account and gamertag.
- Confirm privacy and family settings allow multiplayer.
- On consoles, confirm any required online multiplayer subscription.
- Verify that the invitation or Realm belongs to the account currently in use.
- Check that the Realm has not expired, been deleted, or become unavailable.
A Microsoft account is required for multiplayer; see Minecraft’s multiplayer instructions.
Windows Bedrock loopback edge case
Bedrock game and Bedrock Dedicated Server running on the same Windows computer may be blocked by loopback restrictions. First test from another LAN device. If that works while the same PC fails, follow the loopback instructions for your installed build in Microsoft’s current Bedrock documentation; guidance can differ for Preview and retail builds.

Review Bedrock server properties
Check server-port, server-portv6, allowlist settings, visibility, discovery, and any custom port in server.properties. Microsoft’s reference is Bedrock server.properties.
LAN worlds and friend sessions
Java LAN on Windows
- Put both devices on the same non-guest local network.
- The host opens the world, selects Open to LAN, then Start LAN World.
- The other player checks the Multiplayer screen.
- On Windows, open Network & Internet settings, open the active connection’s properties, and set a trusted home network to Private.
- Restart Minecraft and open the world to LAN again.
Do not mark an untrusted public Wi-Fi network as Private. The official procedure is documented at Minecraft LAN troubleshooting. Guest Wi-Fi, access-point isolation, VPNs, different subnets, and firewall rules can all block device-to-device traffic.
Bedrock friend worlds
Sign in with Microsoft accounts, add the correct gamertag, load the world, and use Invite to Game. Check privacy and family settings, then restart the world and resend the invitation if the session is stale.
If you host the server: find where the path breaks
- Can the host join? If not, check the process, bind address, local firewall, version, and mods.
- Can another LAN device join? If not, check the host firewall, LAN isolation, and port.
- Can a phone hotspot join? If not, check router forwarding, CGNAT, double NAT, public IP, and ISP filtering.
- If outside access works: investigate the specific player’s address, edition, version, account, VPN, or firewall.
The forwarding path is: internet friend → public IP and external port → router rule → host’s current private IP → Minecraft process. DHCP can change the host’s private IP and silently invalidate a working rule. Port forwarding is not a normal fix for someone joining a third-party server.

Recognize CGNAT and double NAT
Forwarding may fail when the ISP uses carrier-grade NAT, two routers perform NAT, the router’s WAN address differs from the apparent public address, or inbound traffic is filtered. A server that works on LAN but not from a hotspot is a strong clue. Alternatives include Realms, a reputable host, a suitable virtual-LAN service, asking the ISP for a public IPv4 address, or correctly configured IPv6.
Realms troubleshooting
Minecraft Realms is official persistent hosting and does not require home-router port forwarding. Java and Bedrock Realms are separate ecosystems. For a Realm timeout:
- Check service status.
- Confirm the correct Microsoft account is signed in.
- Leave and reaccept a stale invitation.
- Verify the owner’s subscription and Realm status.
- Try another world slot if one world fails.
- Restart Minecraft, sign in again, and test from another network.
Do not delete or replace a world until you have ruled out account and connectivity problems.

Resolve a hostname
nslookup server.example.com
If it does not resolve, investigate DNS or the server’s domain configuration; graphics settings cannot fix name resolution.
Best Value
Test a Java TCP port
Test-NetConnection server.example.com -Port 25565
TcpTestSucceeded : True proves that a TCP connection reached that host and port, not that the Minecraft version, authentication, whitelist, mods, or gameplay layer is correct. False indicates a closed, filtered, offline, misforwarded, or wrong-protocol port. This test does not validate Bedrock UDP.
Clear DNS and reset Windows networking cautiously
ipconfig /flushdns
Restart Minecraft afterward. More disruptive commands are:
netsh winsock reset
netsh int ip reset
Restart Windows after these resets; they can affect custom network configuration. Server owners should also inspect logs for bind errors, ports already in use, crash loops, failed mod loading, session errors, world-loading failures, and proxy/backend errors. Back up worlds and configuration before changing server software or deleting files.
Java, Bedrock, and cross-play expectations
Java and Bedrock use different editions, server ecosystems, and protocols by default. They cannot directly join each other in an ordinary setup. Cross-play is possible only when a compatible server or proxy arrangement is configured. See Minecraft’s Java and Bedrock comparison before troubleshooting ports.

When the server owner or support must act
Contact the server owner when only that server fails, the host cannot accept local connections, friends cannot connect despite successful LAN tests, or the owner recently changed versions, mods, ports, or the public address. Provide:
- Edition and exact game version
- Full error text
- Server address and port (never passwords or private credentials)
- Whether other players can join
- Whether another network works
- Whether the host sees an attempt in the console
- Device and operating system
- Mods, proxy, VPN, and antivirus details
Contact Minecraft Support for account, login, Realm, or service problems that persist after status and network checks. Reinstalling Minecraft rarely fixes a router, server, CGNAT, or ISP problem.
Choose a hosting approach after connectivity is understood
| Option | Strengths | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Self-hosting | Full control over files, mods, settings, backups, and permissions; no mandatory hosting subscription | Requires administration, security, backups, an available host, and workable networking |
| Realms | Official low-maintenance hosting with no home port forwarding and persistent worlds | Recurring subscription, edition-specific limits, and less control than dedicated software |
| Third-party hosting | Usually avoids home-network setup and may provide backups, monitoring, and mod tools | Recurring cost; hardware, support, compatibility, limits, and cancellation terms vary |
Realms is a sensible choice for a small private group blocked by CGNAT or router setup. It will not repair an account problem, local firewall, or Minecraft service outage, and it is not designed for every large or heavily modded community.
