Avast may be blocking a game’s network connection, launcher traffic, or executable—but the same symptoms can come from Riot Vanguard, Windows Firewall, a router, DNS, or a server outage. Start by identifying the affected Avast component, then make the smallest safe change: an application rule or one verified file exception. Do not leave Avast Firewall, Web Guard, or antivirus protection disabled.
The menu names below differ between Avast Antivirus/Premium Security and Avast One. Exact controls also depend on edition, platform, and current app version.
1. Update Avast and the game, then restart Windows
- Open Avast and run its in-app program update and virus-definition update.
- Update Riot Client and League of Legends through the launcher.
- Restart Windows, rather than only closing the launcher.
Updates can refresh detection definitions and stale rules, but they do not prove Avast was the cause. Note the exact error and when it began, especially if the failure followed a game or Avast update. Avast lists an up-to-date application and current virus definitions among its troubleshooting prerequisites (Avast troubleshooting guidance).

2. Allow League or Riot Client in Avast Firewall
A file exception and a Firewall rule are different. The Firewall controls network communication; a file or folder exception controls scanning and shield behavior.
Avast Antivirus or Premium Security
- Open Avast and select Protection → Firewall.
- Open Apps, switch to All if necessary, and find League, Riot Client, or the process named in the alert.
- Change an incorrect Block action to Allow. Avast’s application rules also offer Smart mode and Ask; use Allow only for software you recognize.
- Restart Riot Client and the game.
If the app is missing, open Protection → Firewall → gear icon → View Firewall rules → Application rules. Delete a stale block rule, then relaunch the game so Avast can create a new rule. Avast creates an application rule when a program first attempts to connect and documents the rule actions at its application-rules guide.
Avast One
- Open Explore → Firewall → Open Firewall.
- Choose Apps, then check Active, Inactive, Blocked, or All.
- Unblock or allow the trusted Riot or game process and restart the launcher.
Avast One uses a different interface from Avast Antivirus and Premium Security. Avast’s product documentation describes these paths at its Avast One Firewall page. Firewall availability and controls vary by product and version; if no Firewall menu exists, Windows Firewall or another security product may be doing the filtering.
Which executable?
Use the file from your own official installation. Riot has referenced this example League path: C:Riot GamesLeague of LegendsGameLeague of Legends.exe (Riot support). Your game may be on another drive or in a custom folder. Depending on the symptom, the blocked process may be Riot Client or a Vanguard component instead of the game executable. Do not whitelist executables downloaded from forums.

3. Trust only a private home network when Avast is restricting it
A network classified as untrusted can apply stricter rules. Change that status only for a private network you control.
Avast Antivirus or Premium Security
- Open Protection → Firewall → Networks.
- Find the active connection and select Show settings.
- Choose I trust this network.
Avast One
- Open Explore → Firewall → Open Firewall.
- Open the connected-network menu.
- Select Trust this network.
Never make school, hotel, airport, café, or other unknown Wi-Fi trusted. Network trust does not repair a blocked executable, a Riot outage, or a bad router configuration. Avast explains trusted and untrusted network behavior at its Firewall internet-access guide.
4. Add a narrow, verified Avast exception
Use this when Avast quarantines or repeatedly scans a known-good file, or when a shield stops the game after an update. First inspect the alert, file location, and publisher; do not override a malware detection simply because the game will not start.
- Open ☰ Menu → Settings → General → Exceptions.
- Select Add exception, then choose File/Folder.
- Select the specific official game executable. If that is insufficient, use only the official game installation folder.
- Apply the exception to the affected feature when Avast offers feature-specific choices, then restart Riot Client.
Avast supports exceptions for websites or domains, files or folders, and command-line items (Avast exceptions documentation). Prefer one executable over a broad folder; never exclude the entire system drive, your Downloads folder, all executable files, or a cracked or modified game. If Avast identifies a legitimate file as malware, submit it for false-positive review instead of permanently weakening protection. Avast says confirmed false positives are generally corrected through definition updates, although timing varies (Avast troubleshooting guidance).

5. Test Web Guard or HTTPS scanning, then repair Avast
This path is most relevant when Riot Client cannot log in, download patches, load its store or news panel, or shows a certificate or connection error. It can also matter when related websites fail in the same way.
Temporary Web Guard test
- Open Avast and select Scam Guardian → Web Guard.
- Turn Web Guard off for the shortest available period.
- Relaunch Riot Client and test the affected action.
- Turn Web Guard back on immediately.
Temporary HTTPS-scanning test
- Go to ☰ Menu → Settings → Scam Guardian → Web Guard.
- Temporarily clear Enable HTTPS scanning.
- Test the launcher, then re-enable it.
If the game works only during the test, Avast is likely involved. Repair Avast through Windows’ installed-app controls or its maintenance option, restart Windows, update Avast again, and retest. Avast also lists hardware network acceleration as another component that may be tested for website-access conflicts (Avast’s troubleshooting workflow). Disabling Web Guard or HTTPS scanning is a diagnostic or compatibility workaround, not a preferred permanent setting.
How to interpret the isolation test
Close League and Riot Client, temporarily disable only the suspected Avast component, test once, and re-enable it immediately.

If none of those fixes work
- Riot or Vanguard: A Vanguard error is not automatically an Avast problem. Riot’s January 14, 2026 guidance for VAN 9002 says Windows Exploit Protection must be enabled for the game to run (Riot’s VAN 9002 article).
- Windows Firewall: Review its allowed-app rules; a second firewall can still block traffic after Avast is changed.
- Riot services: Check Riot’s current service information and use the client’s repair function if available.
- Network: Restart the router, test a phone hotspot, and compare DNS or other-network behavior.
- Conflicting software: Temporarily remove VPNs, traffic filters, overlays, and other third-party firewalls; use a clean boot if several utilities start with Windows.
- Installation or logs: Repair the game, gather Riot logs, and contact Riot Support when Vanguard, launcher, or corrupted files remain implicated. Riot’s troubleshooting index is at Riot Support.
Choosing the right change

Buying a different Avast tier is not an evidence-based fix for a misconfigured rule, false positive, Windows Firewall conflict, or Riot problem. Avast Free Antivirus, Premium Security, and Avast One expose different controls; choose a product for its broader security features, not as a guaranteed League repair.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Avast block League of Legends?
It can block a game executable, Riot Client traffic, Web Guard requests, or a file after an update, but similar symptoms also come from Vanguard, Windows Firewall, network equipment, DNS, or Riot services. Confirm involvement with a component-specific temporary test.
Should I disable Avast while playing?
No. Disable only the suspected component briefly for diagnosis, then restore it and use a targeted rule or exception if the test identifies Avast.
Is Avast Firewall available in the free version?
Availability and controls depend on the Avast edition, platform, and current version. Avast’s own support pages describe differing product coverage, so the absence of a Firewall menu means you may be using another edition or another firewall may be filtering traffic.
Why does allowing League through Firewall not fix the launcher?
The launcher may be blocked by Web Guard or HTTPS scanning, or the blocked process may be Riot Client rather than League.exe. File scanning and network rules are separate controls.

Is a Vanguard error caused by Avast?
Not necessarily. Check Riot’s stated Vanguard requirement first; for example, Riot says VAN 9002 requires Windows Exploit Protection to be enabled.
Is it safe to trust my home network?
Only when it is private and genuinely trusted. Do not trust public, school, hotel, café, airport, or unknown Wi-Fi.
Should I add the whole Riot Games folder as an exception?
