Yes—Microsoft raised recommended U.S. prices for every current Xbox Series S and Series X configuration on October 3, 2025. Announced September 19, the move was the second Xbox console increase of 2025. It added $20 to each Series S, $50 to the Series X Digital and standard Series X, and $70 to the 2TB Galaxy Black Special Edition. The September increase applied to consoles in the United States; controllers and headsets were unchanged.

This is a retrospective of that 2025 change, not a report of a new 2026 increase. Retailers can still set their own prices through discounts, bundles, clearance sales, and old inventory.

New U.S. Xbox prices from October 3, 2025

Microsoft described these as recommended retail prices. The complete model-by-model change was:

Model September 2025 U.S. MSRP Previous May 2025 price September increase Early-2025 price Total increase from early 2025
Xbox Series S, 512GB $399.99 $379 $20 $299 $100 (about 33%)
Xbox Series S, 1TB $449.99 $429.99 $20 $349 $100 (about 29%)
Xbox Series X Digital $599.99 $549.99 $50 $449 $150 (about 33%)
Xbox Series X $649.99 $599.99 $50 $499 $150 (about 30%)
Xbox Series X, 2TB Galaxy Black Special Edition $799.99 $729 $70 $599 $200 (about 33%)

The price list and comparisons come from contemporary reporting by Thurrott. The $799.99 figure applies only to the 2TB Galaxy Black edition, not to every Series X.

When the increase happened—and where

Microsoft announced the change on September 19, 2025, and set October 3 as the effective date, according to its Xbox Support pricing notice. The September round was U.S.-only. It should not be presented as a price change for Canada, the United Kingdom, Europe, or other regions without separate regional confirmation.

Because the prices were recommended retailer prices, a store could list a console below them while clearing older stock or running a promotion. A higher MSRP also does not prove that supply was scarce or that retailers could never discount the hardware.

What Microsoft said about the reason

Microsoft attributed the adjustment to “changes in the macroeconomic environment.” That is the company’s confirmed explanation in the cited announcement. It did not identify one tariff, component, factory, currency movement, or distribution charge as the sole cause.

Tariff uncertainty, manufacturing costs, logistics, exchange rates, and broader hardware inflation were discussed as possible context in contemporary coverage, including links collected by Techmeme. Those are interpretations and background, not a more specific official explanation from Microsoft.

Why “again” matters

The October prices followed a worldwide Xbox pricing change announced in May 2025. That earlier round raised Series S models by roughly $80 and Series X models by $100 to $129, depending on configuration. It also raised controller and headset prices.

The later round was narrower: U.S. consoles only, with no reported increase to controllers or headsets. Looking only at the additional $20 to $70 therefore understates the effect on shoppers. Compared with early-2025 prices, every listed console was $100 to $200 more expensive.

Rank #3

How the five configurations differ

Configuration Storage Disc drive Who it suits
Series S 512GB 512GB No Lowest-cost, digital-focused entry
Series S 1TB 1TB No Digital players wanting more built-in storage
Series X Digital Not stated in the supplied pricing comparison No Series X performance for buyers who do not need discs
Standard Series X Not stated in the supplied pricing comparison Yes Higher-performance Xbox gaming and physical-game support
Series X 2TB Galaxy Black 2TB Yes Maximum built-in storage in this lineup

Series S is the lower-spec, digital-only option; it is not a performance equivalent to Series X. Digital Series X cannot play physical Xbox discs, while the standard Series X can. The 512GB headline capacity also includes space used by system software, so usable storage is lower.

Should you buy before or after a price change?

Buy when an old-price unit is available

  • You already intend to buy an Xbox and find a legitimate retailer still selling old-price inventory.
  • You want the standard Series X or 2TB model, where the October increase was largest in dollars.
  • A bundle or sale offsets more than the planned increase.

Wait when timing is flexible

  • You are comparing Xbox with PlayStation, a gaming PC, or cloud gaming rather than replacing a console immediately.
  • You expect retailers to discount stock, but understand that a discount is possible rather than guaranteed.
  • You want to see future bundles, promotions, or model changes.

Choose Series S for the lowest entry cost

Series S remains the least expensive route into the Xbox ecosystem. It makes the most sense for digital-game and subscription users who accept lower performance and less storage than Series X. It is a poor fit if you own physical discs or expect the highest-fidelity console output.

Consider used or refurbished hardware

Used and refurbished consoles can cost less than the new recommended price, but compare warranty length, return rights, controller condition, storage, and whether the seller clearly identifies the exact model.

Other costs and alternatives

Game Pass

Xbox Game Pass can provide a rotating catalog and, depending on the plan, online multiplayer, PC access, or cloud gaming. It does not remove the console purchase cost, and plan names and prices are volatile; check the official page on the day you subscribe.

Storage expansion

Expansion cards can be expensive relative to a Series S. External USB storage can archive games and run some backward-compatible titles, but it does not provide identical support for every optimized current-generation game. See Microsoft’s Xbox accessories catalog for compatible options.

PC or cloud gaming

Xbox first-party games and services increasingly extend to Windows PC, but a PC requires more setup and can have a higher initial cost. Xbox Cloud Gaming can let supported users try the ecosystem without immediately buying a console; unreliable broadband, data limits, and a preference for locally installed games make it a weaker substitute.

What did not change in the September round

The reported October adjustment covered the five Series S and Series X console configurations listed above. Controllers and headsets were not raised in that second round. That differs from the May worldwide change, which included peripherals.

Bottom line for shoppers

The October 3, 2025 U.S. increase was real, model-specific, and the second Xbox console increase of that year. The 2TB Galaxy Black Series X took the largest cumulative hit at $200 above its early-2025 price, while both Series S models remained the cheapest entry points but were still $100 higher than earlier in 2025. For an immediate buyer, the sensible comparison is the actual retailer price—including bundles and old stock—against the model’s disc, storage, and performance trade-offs, not the MSRP alone.
