It keeps direct Xbox Wireless pairing and the familiar over-ear controls while adding an all-black finish, a manufacturer-rated battery life of up to 20 hours, enhanced microphone processing and Dolby Atmos at no additional cost, according to Microsoft’s announcement. It is most compelling for Xbox players who want simple console setup and a simultaneous Bluetooth connection; the value depends on the live price and whether those upgrades matter to you.
What changed in the Xbox Wireless Headset refresh?
Microsoft announced the refreshed headset on October 22, 2024. It is an update to the 2021 Xbox Wireless Headset rather than a radical redesign: the overall over-ear format and earcup control approach remain familiar, but the exterior is now all black instead of using the earlier green accents. Digital Trends’ launch coverage also describes it as a refresh.
- Microphone: Enhanced auto-mute and voice isolation intended to reduce unwanted background sound in transmitted voice chat.
- Battery: Up to 20 hours of playtime, compared with the previous model’s approximately 15-hour rating.
- Bluetooth: Bluetooth 5.3 for compatible PCs, phones, tablets and other Bluetooth devices.
- Spatial audio: Dolby Atmos is included at no additional cost, according to Microsoft.
- Appearance: An all-black finish.
The headset retains direct Xbox Wireless pairing, so console use does not require a separate USB dongle or wireless base station. Its rotating earcup controls and Xbox Accessories app support also carry over.
What voice isolation does—and what it does not
Voice isolation is a microphone-side feature: it is intended to make your voice clearer to other people by reducing background sound picked up during chat. Enhanced auto-mute is another microphone feature. Microsoft describes their intended benefit, but its announcement does not provide independent microphone measurements, noise-level test conditions or a quantified reduction in background sound. Microsoft’s feature description is not a performance guarantee.
#1 Best Overall

- UP TO 20 HOURS OF BATTERY LIFE — Enjoy up to 20 hours of battery life from the internal rechargeable battery so you can focus on gaming without frequent recharges.
Do not confuse voice isolation with active noise cancellation (ANC). ANC reduces sound reaching the wearer’s ears; voice isolation processes sound going out through the microphone. Passive isolation, meanwhile, comes from the earcups and their fit. The launch information does not establish ANC performance for this headset. If your priority is keeping keyboard clicks, fans or nearby conversation out of chat, seek microphone tests that cover your particular noise conditions; the available launch claims do not show how consistently the headset handles them or whether processing affects voice naturalness.
How Bluetooth 5.3 works with Xbox Wireless
Bluetooth 5.3 expands connectivity to compatible devices, but it does not replace Xbox Wireless for console play. On Xbox consoles, the headset pairs directly using Xbox Wireless. On supported PCs and mobile devices, Bluetooth provides another connection path. Microsoft says the headset can stay connected to an Xbox console and a Bluetooth device, a setup useful for keeping a phone connection available while gaming. The Best Buy listing also describes simultaneous Xbox and Bluetooth pairing; that should not be read as a promise that every audio source will mix or behave identically on every device.

- Low-Latency 2.4GHz Wireless plus Bluetooth 5.2 Connectivity
- Best-in-Class Battery Life of up to 40 Hours Plus Quick Charge
- QuickSwitch Button for Seamless Wireless to Bluetooth switching
- Ultra-Lightweight, Floating Headband and Memory Foam Cushions
- Amplified 40mm Drivers for Powerful Spatial Audio
Bluetooth version alone does not establish a particular codec, range, latency, microphone quality or battery life. Microsoft also promotes Qualcomm S5 Gen 2 technology and low-latency wireless performance; those are company claims, not independent test results in the announcement.
Supported devices and connection types
| Device | Connection | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One | Xbox Wireless | Direct console pairing; no separate Xbox wireless dongle or base station is required. |
| Windows 10/11 PC | Bluetooth | Bluetooth support is listed; setup and customization may depend on the PC and Xbox Accessories app. |
| Bluetooth-capable phone or tablet | Bluetooth | Can be paired for audio and chat. Device and operating-system behavior may vary. |
For basic console pairing, the Xbox Accessories app is not a prerequisite. Microsoft lists the app for audio customization on Xbox and Windows devices. The headset retains rotating earcup dials for volume and game/chat balance, along with an adjustable headband, padded earcups and an extendable microphone boom.

Battery life: a useful gain, not a guarantee
Microsoft rates the refreshed headset for up to 20 hours of playtime. The original model’s rating was approximately 15 hours, so the headline difference is about five hours, or roughly one-third more than that earlier figure. The comparison and refresh details are covered by Digital Trends.
“Up to” is a manufacturer estimate, not a promised runtime. Microsoft says its battery testing used pre-production units; actual endurance can vary with volume, wireless distance, Bluetooth use, chat and other conditions. The announcement does not establish an independently measured retail-unit result. Players who need several days between charges may prefer a model advertising substantially longer endurance, such as the Turtle Beach Stealth 600 Gen 3, which lists up to 80 hours on its official product page. That is a manufacturer claim for a different headset and does not by itself establish better overall performance.

Spatial audio and Dolby Atmos
Microsoft lists Dolby Atmos, Windows Sonic and DTS Headphone:X support, and says Dolby Atmos comes at no additional cost with the refresh. Spatial-audio effects depend on supported content and the selected platform settings. These are alternative spatial-audio technologies, not three modes that should be assumed to operate simultaneously. Licensing, app downloads or supported hardware may also be required for DTS Headphone:X. Check the game, operating system or console settings and the specific service requirements before expecting a particular effect. Microsoft’s announcement sets out the formats and qualifications.
Price and availability
Microsoft announced a U.S. launch price of $109.99 on October 22, 2024, and said the headset was available immediately in select Xbox markets worldwide. That launch price is historical, not a promise of today’s price or worldwide availability. The U.S. Xbox accessories catalog was indexed at $119.99 for the standard headset in the supplied price snapshot; catalog prices and stock can change, so check the listing before buying. Regional prices and availability should be verified in your market.

Who should consider it—and who should compare first?
It makes sense for Xbox-first players who want
- Direct Xbox Wireless pairing without a separate console transmitter.
- A Bluetooth connection for a phone or compatible PC alongside console gaming.
- Convenient volume and game/chat adjustment from the earcups.
- The longer stated battery rating and Dolby Atmos inclusion compared with the previous model.
Compare alternatives if your priority is different
- Much longer advertised battery life: Turtle Beach lists up to 80 hours for the Stealth 600 Gen 3. It uses a USB-A 2.4 GHz transmitter for wireless gaming and also offers Bluetooth, so its connection setup differs from the Xbox headset’s direct Xbox Wireless pairing. See Turtle Beach’s product page.
- A lower-cost wired Xbox option: The Xbox Stereo Headset is listed in the Xbox accessories catalog at $64.99 in the supplied price snapshot. It is not a wireless substitute and does not provide Bluetooth.
- Different wireless features at a similar catalog price: The same Xbox catalog listed the SteelSeries Arctis Nova 3 X Wireless at $109.99. Treat that and other catalog prices as changeable signals, not guaranteed live prices; compare current specifications and compatibility before choosing.
If you run into a Bluetooth pairing problem, treat Xbox Wireless and Bluetooth as separate paths rather than assuming one confirms the other works. A practical first pass is to remove the headset from the device’s saved Bluetooth list, power-cycle both devices, re-enter pairing mode, then test each connection separately. Check the Xbox Accessories app for an offered headset firmware update. This is general troubleshooting guidance; the launch announcement does not provide an official step-by-step recovery procedure.
