Sony reported approximately 84.2 million cumulative PS5 sell-in units through September 30, 2025 in results announced November 11, 2025. Its later filings reported 93.7 million cumulative units through March 31, 2026, plus 1.6 million shipped into the channel in the quarter ended June 30, 2026. That implies approximately 95.3 million cumulative sell-in units through June 30, 2026.
What Sony actually announced
Sony’s November 11, 2025 results covered the quarter ended September 30, 2025. The company’s revised supplemental data reported 4.0 million PS5 hardware units for that quarter. Added to the 77.7 million cumulative units reported through March 31, 2025, that put the PS5 at approximately 84.2 million cumulative units.
Some contemporary reports used 3.9 million for the quarter. Sony later stated that its previously disclosed FY2025 second- and third-quarter hardware figures had been revised to 4.0 million and 9.0 million, respectively. The revised figure is the one to use.
Primary figures are in Sony’s FY2025 Q2 supplemental information and consolidated financial results.

“Sold” is shorthand for Sony’s sell-in measure
Sony labels these hardware figures sell-in. That means consoles shipped to retailers and distributors, not a directly audited count of consoles purchased by final consumers. Sell-through is the consumer purchase from the retail channel.
“Sony sold over 84 million PS5 consoles” is understandable headline shorthand, but the precise wording is that Sony reported approximately 84.2 million cumulative PS5 sell-in units. The figure does not prove that 84.2 million households owned an active PS5: units can remain in inventory, be resold, serve as replacements, or no longer be in use.
PS5 sales timeline
| Fiscal endpoint | Cumulative PS5 sell-in |
|---|---|
| March 31, 2021 | 7.8 million |
| March 31, 2022 | 19.3 million |
| March 31, 2023 | 38.4 million |

| March 31, 2025 | 77.7 million |
| September 30, 2025 | Approximately 84.2 million |
| March 31, 2026 | 93.7 million |
| June 30, 2026 | Approximately 95.3 million, inferred |
The June 2026 figure is an arithmetic inference: Sony reported 93.7 million cumulative units at March 31 and 1.6 million units for the April–June quarter. Sony did not print 95.3 million as a separate cumulative total in that table. The underlying filing is the FY2026 Q1 supplemental information.

How the PS5 compares with earlier PlayStations
It has passed the widely cited PS3 total
By March 2026, Sony’s 93.7 million sell-in figure had moved beyond the approximately 87.4 million lifetime total commonly cited for PlayStation 3. The comparison is approximate because historical generations were not always reported under identical methods.

PlayStation 4 lifetime sales are generally reported at more than 117 million units. The PS5 was approaching 95 million sell-in units by June 2026, so it remained below that mark. Whether it eventually exceeds PS4 depends on pricing, production, software releases, the length of the generation and whether Sony continues reporting hardware on the same basis; Sony has not guaranteed that outcome.
Comparisons with the original PlayStation and PS2 are useful historical context, but precise rankings should specify whether they use manufacturer sell-in, consumer sell-through, industry estimates or lifetime totals.

Why the milestone matters beyond hardware
A large installed base expands the audience for games and makes the platform more attractive to publishers. Sony’s FY2025 Q2 data shows the surrounding business at the 84-million reporting point:
- 119 million estimated PlayStation Network monthly active users in September 2025.
- 80.3 million PS4 and PS5 full-game software units sold during the quarter.
- 72% digital download ratio for those full-game software sales.
- 6.3 million first-party software units sold.
- Approximately ¥1.1 trillion in Game & Network Services sales and approximately ¥120.4 billion in operating income.
These figures cover more than console hardware. The installed base supports game sales, downloadable content, subscriptions and network activity, while digital purchases can continue generating revenue after the initial console sale.

What drove PS5 demand?
- Strong PlayStation brand recognition and a large existing user base.
- Recovery from severe launch-period supply constraints and semiconductor shortages.
- A broad first-party and third-party software ecosystem.
- Current-generation features such as fast SSD loading, higher-resolution output and DualSense haptics and adaptive triggers.
- A growing installed base that gives developers a larger potential audience.
- Multiple hardware options, including the PS5 Slim and PS5 Pro.
Those factors describe platform support for demand; Sony has not established that one specific game single-handedly caused the 84-million milestone.

Contemporary coverage, including Thurrott’s November 2025 report, framed the PS5 as ahead of every Xbox generation. That conclusion relies on widely cited industry estimates, not a complete set of current Microsoft-reported lifetime hardware totals.
Microsoft has not consistently published equivalent lifetime figures for recent Xbox generations, and Xbox 360 and Xbox Series X|S totals are commonly treated as estimates. The defensible claim is therefore that, based on those estimates, PS5 shipments had moved ahead of the historical totals associated with Microsoft’s consoles—not that Sony and Microsoft published directly comparable audited numbers.

Latest figure and what comes next
For readers checking the headline today, the key dates are:
- 84.2 million: approximately cumulative sell-in through September 30, 2025, announced November 11, 2025.
- 93.7 million: cumulative sell-in through March 31, 2026.
- 1.6 million: PS5 units shipped into the channel during the quarter ended June 30, 2026.
- Approximately 95.3 million: inferred cumulative sell-in through June 30, 2026.
The last number is a calculation from Sony’s reported figures, not a separately printed cumulative total. Future growth will depend on hardware pricing and availability, software releases, the generation’s lifespan and consumer demand. The milestone demonstrates strong console and ecosystem scale, but it does not by itself prove total games-market dominance or guarantee that PS5 will surpass PS4.
