Yes—supported games can now be downloaded and played locally through the Xbox app on Arm-based Windows 11 PCs, including Snapdragon X laptops. Microsoft announced the broader rollout on January 21, 2026. It does not make every Windows game compatible, nor does it turn an integrated Snapdragon GPU into a discrete gaming GPU: compatibility, anti-cheat support and performance remain title- and device-specific.
Current status (August 18, 2026): The Xbox app is available on Arm-based Windows 11 PCs generally, rather than only through the earlier Insider test. Microsoft says more than 85% of the Game Pass catalog is compatible with Arm PCs; that is Microsoft’s own catalog-level claim, not an independently audited guarantee that those games will run well on every laptop. See Microsoft’s announcement at Windows Experience.
What changed, and when
Before the preview
On many Qualcomm-powered Windows PCs, the Xbox app was mainly useful for browsing the catalog and using Xbox Cloud Gaming. Local installation was restricted or unavailable for much of the catalog.
August 13, 2025: Insider testing
Microsoft began testing local downloads and play for supported titles through the Xbox PC app. Insiders had to install Xbox Insider Hub, choose Previews → PC Gaming → Join, and use Xbox app version 2508.1001.27.0 or later. Those instructions describe the preview, not a requirement for the current public release. Details are in Microsoft’s Windows Insider announcement.

January 21, 2026: public Arm rollout
The Xbox app became available on all Arm-based Windows 11 PCs. Qualcomm Snapdragon systems are the most visible examples, but the platform statement is broader than Qualcomm hardware. The key change is at the app and storefront layer: supported titles can now be downloaded and installed locally. Microsoft has not converted the entire PC catalog into native Arm64 software.
Which games can you download?
The Xbox app can offer local installation for a wide range of supported titles, including:

- Games included with PC Game Pass or an eligible Game Pass tier.
- Purchased PC games that carry the appropriate Microsoft/Xbox PC entitlement.
- Xbox Play Anywhere games when the same Microsoft account owns the PC entitlement.
- Native Arm64 games.
- Traditional x86/x64 Windows games that run through Microsoft’s Prism emulation layer.
Catalog visibility, a successful installation and a good playing experience are different things. A title may install and launch yet have low frame rates, rendering bugs, crashes, a broken launcher, or an online component that fails. The Xbox app catalog also does not represent the complete Steam, Epic Games Store, Battle.net or other PC storefront ecosystems.
What “compatible” means on an Arm PC
| Compatibility level | What happens | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Native Arm64 | The game, or important components, are compiled for Arm. | Usually the cleanest software path, though GPU drivers and game quality still matter. |
| x86/x64 through Prism | Windows translates conventional PC code for the Arm processor. | Many games can work, but performance and stability vary with the chip, cooling, memory, drivers and engine. |
| Cloud-playable only | The game runs on Microsoft’s servers instead of locally. | Requires a supported subscription, region, device and reliable low-latency network; it is not an offline installation. |
“Compatible” therefore does not mean “runs like the same game on an x86 gaming laptop with a discrete GPU.”

Why compatibility improved
Prism now supports AVX and AVX2
Modern x86 games often use AVX or AVX2 CPU instructions. Microsoft says Prism’s support for those extensions removes an important launch or execution barrier for more emulated games. It does not provide missing graphics drivers, repair incompatible DRM or anti-cheat, or guarantee a useful frame rate. The outcome still depends on the Snapdragon model, RAM, power limit, cooling, resolution and game settings. Microsoft’s technical announcement is at Windows Experience.
Easy Anti-Cheat support
Low-level anti-cheat software can reject Arm systems because it relies on architecture-specific code or Windows components. Microsoft says Epic’s Easy Anti-Cheat support enables games including Fortnite and Gears of War: Reloaded on Arm-based Windows 11 PCs. That is not universal EAC support: each developer must configure and maintain its game, and other anti-cheat systems can have a different status. A single-player mode may work while online services fail.

Windows Performance Fit
The Xbox app’s Windows Performance Fit guidance estimates whether a title should play well on a particular device. Treat it as triage, not a benchmark. It may not reflect a new driver, sustained thermal throttling, a high-resolution display or every graphics setting. For demanding games, check current developer support and device-specific testing as well.
How to install a supported game
- Install all available Windows 11 updates, firmware updates and graphics-driver updates from the laptop manufacturer or its supported update channel.
- Open or install the Xbox app from the Microsoft Store.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account that owns the game or has the relevant Game Pass entitlement.
- Search the PC catalog or open a game page.
- Check whether local availability is shown for the device and read any Windows Performance Fit guidance.
- Select Install or Download, then choose a storage drive if prompted.
- Launch the game locally after installation and allow sign-in, updates and cloud-save synchronization to finish.
- If local installation is not offered or the title will not run, look for a Cloud Gaming option.
Purchased Xbox games do not automatically include a Windows copy. The entitlement must be a PC purchase, an Xbox Play Anywhere title, or a Game Pass inclusion tied to the signed-in account.

If installation or launch fails
- No Install button: The title may not support local Arm play, the account may lack the PC entitlement, or the Xbox app and Windows build may be out of date.
- Immediate crash: Update Windows, the Xbox app, graphics drivers and game files; then check the publisher’s notes for anti-cheat, launcher or DRM restrictions.
- Low or unstable frame rates: Lower resolution and effects, enable the laptop’s performance mode, and reassess the Performance Fit guidance. Native 1080p or 1200p targets are generally more realistic than driving a 3K or 4K panel at native resolution on integrated graphics.
- Multiplayer failure: Check the game’s current anti-cheat and Arm support. Easy Anti-Cheat support in one title does not establish support in every EAC game.
- Only a Cloud option appears: Use Xbox Cloud Gaming if your plan, country, device and connection are supported. Expect bandwidth and latency requirements, and possible service queues.
- Save conflicts: Verify the Microsoft/Xbox account, let synchronization complete, and avoid switching between local and cloud sessions while a save is still uploading.
- Insufficient space: Modern PC games can occupy tens or hundreds of gigabytes; check free storage before starting a Game Pass download.
Do you need Game Pass?
| How you get the game | Subscription requirement |
|---|---|
| Eligible purchased PC game | A subscription is not necessarily required after purchase. |
| PC Game Pass catalog title | Requires an active PC Game Pass or eligible Game Pass subscription. |
| Xbox Play Anywhere title | Requires ownership of a participating title and the same Microsoft account; it is not universal cross-buy. |
| Xbox Cloud Gaming | Requires a cloud-capable subscription tier plus supported region, device and network conditions. |
Is a Snapdragon Windows PC a good gaming purchase?
A sensible fit
- You prioritize battery life, low fan noise, portability and general productivity.
- You mainly play casual, indie, older or specifically verified games.
- You want Game Pass access and can use cloud streaming when local play is unavailable.
- You have a known list of titles that the Xbox app and their developers support.
A poor fit
- You need a large Steam, Epic or other existing library to work without title-by-title checks.
- You compete in multiplayer games that depend on kernel-level anti-cheat.
- You expect consistent high frame rates in new AAA releases, extensive mod tools or discrete-GPU performance.
- You require offline access to games that are only available through streaming.
What to compare before buying
- Exact processor: Snapdragon X Elite, X Plus and lower-tier variants do not perform identically.
- Memory: 16 GB may suit lighter play; 32 GB provides more headroom for demanding games and multitasking.
- Cooling: A thin or passively cooled chassis may sustain less performance than a larger design.
- Screen: A 1080p/1200p gaming target is less demanding than native 3K or 4K.
- Drivers: Confirm how the manufacturer and Qualcomm deliver graphics updates.
- Game-specific support: Check the game’s launcher, anti-cheat and developer statements before purchase.
- Network and storage: Cloud play needs stable, low-latency broadband, while local games still need internet for authentication and updates; both local downloads and modern installs require substantial storage.
For guaranteed broad compatibility and high-end graphics, compare conventional x86 laptops with discrete Nvidia or AMD graphics. They generally weigh more, make more noise and deliver shorter battery life, but avoid many Arm emulation and anti-cheat variables.
Bottom line
The January 2026 Xbox app rollout is a major practical improvement for Snapdragon and other Arm-based Windows 11 PCs: supported Game Pass and purchased PC titles can now be installed locally, with Prism, AVX/AVX2 and selected anti-cheat support widening the list. It is still not parity with an x86 gaming machine. Use the app’s per-device guidance and the game developer’s support information, and choose Arm for efficiency plus selected local/cloud gaming—not as a guarantee that every PC game will run.
