Microsoft did not add disc support to Xbox Series S. It patented a possible system in which a disc-less console requests a game, while another network-connected device with an optical drive reads the physical disc and validates ownership. The first console could then receive access to electronic game content, potentially including a digital version. The patent is not a released Xbox feature, and Microsoft has not confirmed that consumers can use it today.
What Microsoft actually patented
The patent is titled “Software ownership validation of optical discs using secondary device.” Microsoft Technology Licensing, LLC filed the application on November 2, 2020; it was published on May 5, 2022, and issued as U.S. Patent No. 11,571,626 on February 7, 2023. The application is available at Justia, and the granted patent is documented at Justia’s patent record.

| Title | Software ownership validation of optical discs using secondary device |
| Applicant/assignee | Microsoft Technology Licensing, LLC |
| Filing date | November 2, 2020 |
| Publication date | May 5, 2022 |
| Grant | U.S. Patent No. 11,571,626, granted February 7, 2023 |
| Media covered | Optical discs, cartridges, memory cards and other physical media described in the claims |
Its central arrangement has two devices:
- A first device requests content but lacks an optical or other physical-media reader.
- A network search identifies a second device that can read the media.
- The second device has the physical game and examines it, along with relevant account or device data.
- The second device sends a validation object—such as a key, token, certificate or cookie.
- The first device uses that validation to obtain or access the electronic game content.
The patent describes local-network setups as well as devices communicating through different networks or the Internet. It also gives the example of a newer disc-less game device using an older game console with an optical drive. That makes an Xbox Series S paired with an Xbox Series X or Xbox One an understandable illustration, but the patent is not limited to those products.
Would the game be streamed from the other console?
Not necessarily. The patent says the first device can receive access to electronic content and describes receiving a digital version of the physical media. That points more directly to validation followed by a download or transfer of game data than to a mandatory streaming service.

A real implementation could take several forms:
- Validation only: the disc-equipped device proves ownership, while the disc-less console downloads the game from a network service.
- Content transfer: the secondary device supplies game data to the requesting device.
- Streaming or remote execution: the secondary device runs the game and sends video and input over the network.
The patent supports the first two possibilities more clearly than it establishes a finished remote-play product. Calling it “streaming games from an old Xbox” would therefore go beyond what Microsoft has confirmed.
Why this matters to Xbox Series S owners
Xbox Series S has no optical disc drive. Owners of Xbox discs cannot simply insert them into that console, so a system that lets another device perform the physical-media check could bridge the hardware gap without adding a drive to every machine.
That would be useful for someone who already owns a disc-equipped Xbox, shares a household with one, or can otherwise access a compatible reader. It would not eliminate the need for that second device, however. A buyer choosing Series S specifically for an existing disc collection should not assume this patent provides a workaround.

Contemporary coverage described the idea as a possibility rather than a product. Thurrott’s report explicitly noted that, like many patented concepts, it might never reach consumers.

- It does not announce a Series S feature, Xbox dashboard update or release date.
- It does not provide a confirmed list of supported games or consoles.
- It does not say that every Xbox One or Series X can act as the secondary device.
- It does not create a permanent, unrestricted digital license from every disc.
- It does not establish offline behavior, account-sharing rules or simultaneous-use rights.
- It does not guarantee that an ordinary USB DVD or Blu-ray drive would work with Xbox.
Patent issuance means the technique received legal protection; it does not mean Microsoft intends to ship it. The granted claims describe possible technical methods, not consumer-facing product rules.
Would the disc still be required?
The concept depends on physical media being available to a device that can inspect or validate it. The patent discusses validation objects that could remain valid for a defined period or while conditions continue, including the disc remaining in the secondary device. It therefore does not necessarily require the disc to stay inserted forever, but it also does not guarantee that one reading permanently converts the disc into an unrestricted digital entitlement.

- Just follow the instructions sent with the disc drive.
Depending on an eventual implementation, access could stop when the disc is removed, a token expires, the secondary device disconnects, or another authorization condition fails. Those are possibilities described by the patent’s design, not published Xbox policy.
What “ownership validation” could check
The patent uses ownership validation broadly. It describes examining the physical media, settings on the reading device, user profiles, accounts and related authorization information. A production system would likely need to establish several facts:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- The disc is genuine, readable and associated with the requested game.
- The reading device is permitted to validate it.
- The requesting console or account may use the resulting entitlement.
- The validation has not expired or been improperly reused.
Inserting a disc would therefore not automatically mean that any console or any user receives a permanent copy.

Could another person or an old Xbox validate the disc?
Yes, the patent contemplates first and second devices belonging to one user, sharing an account, or being associated with separate users. It also explicitly describes different generations of game devices. An older disc-equipped Xbox is a plausible example of the secondary device, while a newer disc-less console could be the requester.
That does not amount to a promise of unrestricted lending or resale. Microsoft could require account links, device authorization, a shared network, continued disc possession or limits on concurrent use. The patent leaves those policy choices open.

The patent allows for devices on the same local network, on different local networks, or communicating over the Internet or another distributed network. A public remote-disc service would still need to solve:

- Concurrent use by multiple people
- Account recovery and device replacement
- Latency, bandwidth and disconnections
- Regional licensing and publisher restrictions
- Rules for lending, used games and household sharing
Those engineering and licensing requirements explain why a broad patent description should not be treated as evidence of a ready-made cloud service.
Likely failure cases
Even if Microsoft implemented the system, access could fail when:
- The disc is damaged, counterfeit, unreadable or from an unsupported region.
- The title is not backward-compatible or needs a separate download, patch or license.
- The secondary console is offline, unsigned-in or running incompatible software.
- The devices cannot discover or authenticate each other across networks.
- The disc is removed or the validation token expires.
- Another user is already using the same entitlement.
What consumers can do now
There is no confirmed way to use this patent on current Xbox hardware. Choose based on the library you need to play rather than on a possible future feature.
| Option | Best fit | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox Series X | Players who want a console with a built-in optical drive | Availability and current pricing vary; verify the official store |
| Xbox Series S | Players comfortable with digital purchases and downloads | It cannot natively read game discs, and the patent is not a confirmed workaround |
| Xbox Game Pass | Players seeking catalog access without physical media | Catalog and plan terms vary; it generally does not convert owned discs into permanent digital licenses |
| Existing disc-equipped Xbox | Keeping a physical library playable today | Do not buy used hardware specifically for the patent; compatibility has not been confirmed |
An ordinary external USB optical drive should not be treated as an Xbox Series S solution. The patent describes a networked device capable of validating ownership, not generic plug-in disc support.
The bottom line on Microsoft’s disc-less-console patent
Microsoft patented a technical bridge between physical media and hardware without an optical drive. A second network-connected device could read the disc, issue a validation credential and help the disc-less device obtain electronic game content. As of the patent’s February 7, 2023 grant—and with no confirmed product announcement—that remains a patented possibility, not hidden disc support for Xbox Series S. Buy disc-equipped hardware if playing an existing physical library is a requirement.
