Verdict: The Backbone Pro is worth buying if you want one compact controller for USB-C phone play and wireless gaming on tablets, PCs, TVs and other screens. Its larger grips, rear buttons, quiet controls and software profiles are meaningful upgrades over the Backbone One. At $169.99 in the U.S., however, it is not the best value: phone-only players can save with the Backbone One, while GameSir offers more enthusiast hardware for much less.
What the Backbone Pro is
The Backbone Pro is a telescopic controller, not a standalone console. In handheld mode, a compatible USB-C phone plugs directly into the controller for a wired connection. Remove the phone and it becomes a Bluetooth Low Energy controller for supported tablets, PCs, smart TVs and other screens. Backbone describes the product and its platform support on its official product page.
You can use it with controller-compatible native mobile games, Apple Arcade, Netflix Games, Xbox Remote Play, Xbox cloud gaming, PlayStation Remote Play, Steam Link and other supported streaming services. Remote play still requires the relevant console or PC; cloud gaming requires its own service account, plan or game purchase. The controller does not include a game library.
Price and competition
These are U.S. prices observed on August 18, 2026. Sales, stock, tax and regional pricing can change, so check the live checkout page before ordering. A Backbone search result showed a “Sale Sold out” label while the broader shop listed the Pro, making stock worth verifying.

Design, comfort and portability
The Pro replaces the One’s slim grips with larger, textured handles and full-size ALPS thumbsticks. Two rear buttons add inputs that can be remapped in the Backbone app. ABXY buttons are designed to be quieter, while textured triggers and grips improve hold. It feels closer to a compact console controller than the original Backbone, though it remains smaller than an Xbox or DualSense pad.
That improvement has a cost: the Pro is less pocketable than the One. It is a strong travel accessory for a bag, but “full-size” controls do not make it a full-size controller. Buyers with large hands should also consider whether the relatively small face buttons suit them.
Phone and case fit
USB-C alone does not guarantee compatibility. Thickness, camera-bump shape, port position and case dimensions can prevent a phone from seating correctly. Thick rugged, wallet, battery and some magnetic cases may need to be removed. Backbone supplies magnetic adapters intended to improve fit, but the Pro compatibility page and tested-case list should decide any particular phone/case purchase.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- USB-C iPhones, including iPhone 15, 16 and 17 families, are listed as supported.
- Android 10 or later is listed as supported.
- iPhone 14 and earlier Lightning models are not compatible with the Pro.
- Popular USB-C models from Apple, Samsung, Google, Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, Huawei, Realme and Motorola are listed, but individual fit still varies.
- Tablets may work wirelessly; physical telescopic fit and device support must be checked separately.
Controls and features
The important upgrade is the combination of larger grips, ALPS sticks, rear buttons, quiet ABXY controls and adjustable profiles. The Backbone page identifies the triggers as Hall-effect; it identifies the thumbsticks as ALPS, not Hall-effect. Do not buy the Pro expecting Hall-effect sticks.

- CUSTOMIZABLE CONTROLS: Remap rear buttons and save custom profiles through the Backbone App to match your play style. This feature gives you more flexibility and precision, letting you adapt the Backbone Pro Xbox Edition for mobile gaming and any other session.
The free Backbone app provides firmware updates, button remapping, joystick calibration and sensitivity controls. Backbone’s current materials do not establish a complete authoritative specification for rumble, gyro support or USB-C video passthrough. Those features are not prominent headline features, so confirm them with Backbone’s specifications or its support pages if they are essential to you.
Wired and wireless play
USB-C handheld mode
Plugging in a compatible phone uses the controller’s USB-C connection. This is the lowest-latency option and does not require the Pro’s internal battery to be charged, according to Backbone’s charging guidance.
Bluetooth mode
With the phone removed, the Pro uses Bluetooth Low Energy and is rated for up to 40 hours of wireless play. That is a manufacturer rating, not an independent battery result. Pairing, operating-system support and the game’s own Bluetooth support determine whether a PC, tablet or TV works as expected.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCharging and pass-through
- Backbone says a full charge takes less than three hours.
- The supplied USB-C cable is required for charging.
- When the controller and phone are both connected to external power, pass-through charging can reach up to 30 W if the phone and charger support it.
- The Pro is not a power bank and cannot recharge a phone on its own.
The 40-hour figure applies to wireless controller operation, not to charging a phone during handheld play.
Compatibility and game support
| Use case | Status |
|---|---|
| USB-C iPhone 15/16/17 | Supported, case-dependent |
| iPhone 14 or older Lightning | Not compatible with Pro |
| Android 10+ | Officially listed; model and case dependent |
| Native controller-compatible games | Supported; the game must implement controller input |
| Xbox Remote Play | Supported with the required Xbox console and app setup |
| Xbox cloud gaming | Supported through a compatible service; subscription is separate |
| Steam Link | Supported where the PC and app accept controller input |
| PlayStation Remote Play on iPhone | Supported where PlayStation app and device requirements are met |
| PlayStation Remote Play on Android | Backbone says unavailable |
| Wireless PC, tablet and TV | Supported where the target device and game support Bluetooth controllers |
The game determines compatibility. Some titles require controller mode to be enabled manually or support only selected inputs. Without Backbone+, launch the game directly rather than relying on the app’s library. Backbone details supported platforms in its Pro FAQ.

Backbone app and Backbone+
Ownership is a one-time hardware purchase. The basic Backbone app is free for firmware updates, calibration and remapping, and controller-compatible games can be played without a subscription. Backbone+ adds a unified library, recommendations, streaming tools, social features and other premium conveniences. It is optional, but the most polished discovery and integration features may be behind it.
A TechRadar review reported $3.99 per month in September 2025; subscription price and trial terms can vary by region and platform, so check the live signup screen. Do not confuse Backbone+ with Xbox Game Pass, GeForce NOW, Amazon Luna or any other separate game service.

Backbone Pro versus Backbone One
The Backbone One starts at $99.99, roughly $70 less at the observed U.S. prices. It remains the sensible choice for phone-only users who want Backbone’s software and is available in USB-C and Lightning versions. The Pro earns its premium through larger controls, rear buttons, wireless use away from the phone and its own battery. If those benefits will not be used, the One is the rational buy.

GameSir G8 Plus
The G8 Plus is the value and hardware-first option. GameSir lists Hall-effect sticks and triggers, vibration, a six-axis gyroscope, back-button customization and larger console-style controls at the observed $59.99 sale price. It is less pocketable, and TechRadar reported that the Bluetooth model’s iOS app did not recognize the controller for some advanced configuration features.
Razer Kishi Ultra
Razer positions the Kishi Ultra for iPhone 15-series devices, Android phones and Android tablets up to 8 inches, with larger handles and a console-style layout. Consult the Razer announcement and manual for device limits. It favors comfort and tablet use over pocketability and does not offer the same Backbone software ecosystem.

Conventional controller and phone mount
An Xbox or PlayStation controller with a phone clip is worth considering if you play mainly at home. It offers genuinely full-size ergonomics, but loses the Pro’s telescopic portability and integrated phone connection.
Common problems and fixes
The phone will not fit
- Check the exact model and case against Backbone’s compatibility page.
- Remove the case temporarily.
- Install the supplied adapter intended for the phone/case combination.
- Never force the USB-C connector; if fit remains poor, return the controller.
The controller connects but a game does nothing
- Confirm the title supports controllers and enable controller mode in its settings.
- Connect the Pro before launching the game, then launch the title directly.
- Complete any tutorial that gates input.
- Update firmware in the free Backbone app and test a known compatible game.
Wireless pairing fails
Charge the controller, enable Bluetooth, disconnect it from another device and confirm that the target operating system and game accept standard Bluetooth input.
Remote play and cloud gaming are confused
Remote play streams a game running on your own console or PC. Cloud gaming runs the game on a remote server and normally requires a separate service plan or account. Native mobile gaming runs on the phone itself.
Who should buy the Backbone Pro?
- USB-C iPhone 15-or-newer and Android 10+ owners who travel with a controller.
- Players who switch between phone, tablet, PC and TV screens.
- Xbox remote-play or cloud-gaming users who value wired and wireless modes.
- Buyers who specifically want rear buttons, quieter controls and Backbone’s app ecosystem.
Who should skip it?
- iPhone 14 or older Lightning-phone owners.
- Budget buyers or casual players who use one phone only.
- Anyone who specifically requires Hall-effect thumbsticks.
- Players who need rumble, gyro or video passthrough unless Backbone confirms those features for their setup.
- Users wanting broad wired tablet support or a full console-controller feel.
- Android owners whose main goal is PlayStation Remote Play.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Buy the Backbone Pro for its rare combination of portable USB-C play and wireless multi-screen flexibility. Skip it for value, Hall-effect sticks, tablet-first ergonomics or a conventional console-controller experience; the Backbone One and GameSir G8 Plus make stronger cases when those are your priorities.
