AMD is officially supplying the silicon strategy for Xbox’s next generation. Xbox says its next first-party console, codenamed Project Helix, uses a custom AMD system-on-chip (SoC). AMD processors also power the ASUS-made ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X handheld PCs already available. That does not, however, confirm a separate Microsoft-designed Xbox handheld.
What Xbox and AMD actually announced
On June 19, 2025, Xbox announced a strategic, multi-year partnership with AMD to co-engineer gaming silicon. The agreement covers future first-party consoles, handhelds, Windows PCs, cloud gaming and accessories—not merely the purchase of standard retail processors. AMD described a roadmap combining Ryzen CPU technology and Radeon graphics technology.
Xbox also framed the partnership as part of a platform strategy that is not tied to one store or one type of device. The intended ecosystem links console, PC, handheld and cloud experiences through shared identity, libraries, saves and progression. The announcement is documented by Xbox at news.xbox.com.
Is AMD confirmed for the next Xbox console?
Yes. In its March 11, 2026 announcement, Xbox identified its next first-party console as Project Helix and said it is powered by a custom AMD SoC. An SoC combines major processing functions in one package, but Xbox has not published the chip’s final architecture or specifications.

The announcement describes co-design for the next generation of DirectX and FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR). Xbox also says the design targets an “order of magnitude” improvement in ray-tracing performance and capability, with intelligence integrated into the graphics and compute pipeline. That is an Xbox design claim, not an independently measured benchmark; real-world gains cannot be verified until hardware and software are available for testing. AMD already powers Xbox-branded handheld hardware
The ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X launched globally on October 16, 2025, initially across 45 countries. ASUS manufactures these Windows 11 handheld PCs in partnership with Xbox and AMD. They are not evidence that Microsoft has announced a separate first-party handheld console.
Both provide an Xbox-oriented full-screen interface while retaining Windows flexibility. Their software can bring together Xbox and Game Pass titles, Battle.net and other PC storefronts, Xbox Cloud Gaming, Remote Play and Xbox Play Anywhere games. Availability and compatibility vary by title, region and service plan. Xbox’s product details are at xbox.com; the launch announcement is at news.xbox.com.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why this partnership matters for Xbox
Custom silicon can let Microsoft coordinate CPU, GPU, memory and platform software more closely than a generic component purchase. In principle, a shared AMD technology base could make it easier to scale games across a living-room console, Windows PCs, handhelds and cloud servers while carrying saves and progression between devices.

The confirmed elements are narrower: Xbox says Project Helix is co-designed with AMD for next-generation DirectX and FSR, includes AI in the graphics and compute pipeline, and targets a major ray-tracing advance. FSR is not automatic for every game; AMD says support depends on developer integration and is available only in selected titles.
Xbox is converging console and Windows experiences
Project Helix is being positioned as part of an ecosystem rather than an isolated box. Xbox says the Play Anywhere catalogue exceeded 1,500 games in March 2026, a time-sensitive figure that can change. Earlier handheld launch material described support for more than 1,000 games.
Xbox mode for Windows 11 began rolling out in select markets on April 30, 2026. It offers a controller-focused full-screen interface while preserving the Windows desktop and aggregated libraries from Xbox Game Pass and leading PC storefronts. Rollout, catalog access and cloud features vary by market, device and plan. Details are in the Xbox announcement at news.xbox.com.
Should you buy an Xbox handheld now?
| Your priority | Most sensible direction |
|---|---|
| Portable Xbox and PC gaming now | ROG Xbox Ally |
| More memory, storage and battery | ROG Xbox Ally X |
| A traditional living-room Xbox | Wait for confirmed Project Helix details |
| Maximum storefront flexibility | A Windows handheld |
| An appliance-like, low-maintenance experience | A conventional console rather than a Windows handheld |
| Playing console games remotely | A handheld with Remote Play or cloud gaming, subject to network, region and catalog limits |
Trade-offs to understand
- Windows versus simplicity: Multiple launchers, updates and compatibility settings offer flexibility but are less appliance-like than a console.
- Performance versus endurance: Plugged-in and battery operation can use different power limits.
- Storage: Modern PC installations can quickly fill 512GB; both listed models use replaceable M.2 storage.
- Game categories: Native PC installation, Xbox Play Anywhere ownership, Remote Play and cloud streaming are different access methods.
- Cloud requirements: Streaming depends on supported hardware, region, plan and a reliable connection. Xbox says cloud libraries vary by those factors.
A game appearing in an Xbox library does not automatically mean it installs and runs locally on a handheld. Some titles are available through streaming or Remote Play instead, and PC storefront ownership is separate from Play Anywhere ownership.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBottom line
AMD powering Microsoft’s next Xbox console is official: Project Helix uses a custom AMD SoC, while AMD-powered ROG Xbox Ally handhelds are already shipping from ASUS. The larger story is Xbox platform convergence across console, Windows, handheld and cloud. Microsoft has not yet announced Project Helix’s retail date, price or final specifications, and current ASUS handhelds should not be described as a confirmed first-party Microsoft handheld.
