When did Shadow of the Erdtree come out?
Bandai Namco and FromSoftware launched Shadow of the Erdtree worldwide on June 21, 2024. The release added a new chapter to ELDEN RING, which the publisher described in its 2024 announcement as a multiple “Game of the Year”-winning title and a 25-million-unit best seller at that time.

The expansion remains available after launch, but digital prices, physical stock and edition names can vary by country and storefront.
Do you need Elden Ring to play the DLC?
Yes. Shadow of the Erdtree is an expansion and requires the ELDEN RING base game. Buying the DLC alone does not provide the main game.

What the expansion adds
- A new region called the Land of Shadow.
- New enemies and bosses to fight.
- New weapons and other equipment.
- Additional story content connected to the world of ELDEN RING.
Bandai Namco calls it “FromSoftware’s largest expansion to date.”

Choose the store version that matches the platform on which you own the base game. Console generations and PC storefronts are not interchangeable purchases.
How much does Shadow of the Erdtree cost?
There is no single worldwide price that applies to every region. Bandai Namco’s current store listing shows $79.99 for named Shadow of the Erdtree editions on PS5, Xbox Series X and Steam. That is a live listing, so regional pricing, sales, stock and storefront changes can alter the amount you see.
For launch-price context, Bandai Namco and FromSoftware’s official Japanese product table listed the standalone expansion at 4,400 yen including tax in 2024. That Japanese figure should not be treated as a universal global MSRP.

- If you already own ELDEN RING, compare the standalone expansion price with any upgrade or bundle offered for your platform.
- If you do not own the base game, select a bundle that explicitly includes both the game and the expansion.
- Confirm the platform, console generation and region before checkout.
- Check whether a physical listing contains only a game code, a disc, or additional collector items.
What is the Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree Edition?
Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree Edition is the bundle name used for a package containing the base game and the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion. It is the straightforward choice for someone starting ELDEN RING for the first time.

The official Japanese site provides a dedicated Shadow of the Erdtree PC-specifications notice and links to the base game’s requirements. The available product information does not reproduce the complete numeric CPU, GPU, memory or storage table, so those figures should be checked on the current official requirements page rather than guessed.
Before installing on PC
- Confirm that your Steam purchase and your installed base game use the same account.
- Check the current official requirements for CPU, graphics card, RAM and storage.
- Leave enough drive space for the base game, expansion files and updates.
- Update your graphics drivers through your hardware manufacturer’s normal support channel if the game reports a driver problem.
Which buying option should you choose?
Choose the standalone DLC when you already own the game
This avoids paying for another base-game license. Make sure the DLC is bought for the same platform family and account as your copy of ELDEN RING.

The bundle is the simplest option when you are new to the game because it supplies both required components in one purchase.
Consider physical and collector products separately
Bandai Namco also lists the Shadow of the Erdtree Official Vinyl and other licensed merchandise. These are optional collector products, not substitutes for the playable expansion; stock and regional availability must be checked at the time of purchase.
How large is the Elden Ring expansion in context?
In its launch-era 2024 corporate release, Bandai Namco and FromSoftware reported 23 million units for ELDEN RING. A later Bandai Namco corporate update in 2025 reported more than 30 million units shipped. The different totals belong to different reporting years and should not be read as conflicting release-date figures.
