Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11The most reliable general fix is to close every Discord process, delete Discord’s two local folders in %AppData% and %LocalAppData%, restart Windows, then reinstall from Discord’s official Windows installer. Discord recommends this clean reinstall for Windows installer errors and corrupt installations. It removes local app and updater files, not your cloud-hosted account, servers, or messages, but confirm you know your login details before starting. See Discord’s Windows installer-error instructions.
Before changing the installation
“Update Failed” can mean Discord could not download, replace, or launch its new files. A lingering Discord process, corrupted local files, Windows permissions, security software, network filtering, or an installer problem may be involved; the message alone does not establish that Windows 10 is the cause.
- Try Discord in a browser. If it works there but the desktop app does not, focus first on the local Windows installation. If both fail, check your connection and Discord’s live service status before repeating installation attempts.
- Have your Discord login details available. Removing the local folders resets the desktop installation and may remove locally stored preferences or cached data.
- Use Discord’s official installer, not a third-party download, unofficial client, registry cleaner, or “fixer.”
Try closing Discord and restarting Windows
- Click the ^ arrow near the Windows clock, right-click Discord, and choose Quit Discord if that option is available.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager. In Processes, end any clearly identified Discord processes. Discord may still be running even after its window closes.
- If the updater keeps relaunching Discord, check Task Manager’s Startup section for Discord-related entries.
- Restart Windows, then try Discord once. If the update still fails, proceed to the clean reinstall rather than repeatedly running the same installer.
Discord’s installer troubleshooting guidance notes that remaining processes can prevent installation files from being replaced. Close Discord browser tabs during the reinstall as well.
Perform Discord’s clean reinstall
- Close every Discord instance. Quit from the notification area, end remaining Discord processes in Task Manager, and close any browser tab running Discord.
- Remove the roaming folder. Press Windows key + R, enter
%AppData%, and press Enter. Delete only the folder namedDiscord. Its full path is%AppData%Discord. - Remove the local folder. Press Windows key + R again, enter
%LocalAppData%, and press Enter. Delete only the folder namedDiscord. Its full path is%LocalAppData%Discord. - Restart Windows. This clears file locks and is part of Discord’s recommended reinstall sequence.
- Download a fresh installer from Discord. Use the official Discord Windows download; avoid copies from email attachments or third-party sites.
- Run the installer. Save it locally and open it. If a normal launch fails, right-click the installer and choose Run as administrator. If Windows or security software warns you, verify the file came from Discord’s official domain before deciding whether to allow it.
These are the two folders specified by Discord’s Windows installer-error procedure. Do not delete unrelated folders in AppData, Program Files, or ProgramData.

If Windows says a folder or file is in use
Return to Task Manager, end remaining Discord processes, check the notification area again, and retry. If it is still locked, restart Windows and delete the two Discord folders before opening Discord. A command-line alternative is taskkill /F /IM Discord.exe, but it may report an error if that process is not running. Avoid blindly running taskkill /F /IM Update.exe: other applications can use a process with that name, so only stop one you have identified as Discord-related.
If the fresh installation still fails
Test administrator mode, then compatibility mode
Use these as follow-up tests, not as the first step. Open %LocalAppData%Discord, open the newest version folder, right-click the Discord application executable, and select Properties > Compatibility. Try Run this program as an administrator. If needed, test compatibility mode for Windows 7, then Windows 8, changing one setting at a time so you can identify what helped. Revert a setting that does not help. Discord lists these options in its installer guidance; Microsoft also documents compatibility troubleshooting for older programs.

Check security software and the network
- Look in antivirus or endpoint-protection quarantine and blocked-event history for the installer or Discord updater. Do not turn protection off broadly or leave it disabled. If you decide to allow a file, first verify its source and restore normal protection afterward.
- Check whether a firewall, proxy, DNS filter, or network policy could be interrupting the download or execution. As a diagnostic only, try a different network, such as a phone hotspot. If Discord installs there but not on your usual network, investigate filtering or security settings on the usual connection; the test suggests a network-related cause but does not identify which one.
- If you use a managed work or school computer, ask its administrator whether software installation or Discord is restricted.
Check for a broader Windows installer problem
Restart Windows if it is waiting for a restart after an update, then download a fresh installer and try again. Make sure the Windows account has permission to install applications. If other desktop programs also fail to install or remove, troubleshoot Windows rather than treating Discord as the only affected app. Microsoft’s Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter addresses some common problems, including corrupted registry keys and incomplete uninstall data, on Windows 10.

| Symptom | Most useful next step |
|---|---|
| “Update Failed” keeps looping | Quit Discord, end its remaining processes, restart Windows, then use the clean reinstall if the loop continues. |
| “Installation has failed” or Discord reports a corrupt installation | Delete both Discord folders in %AppData% and %LocalAppData%, restart, and install a fresh official copy. |
| A Discord folder cannot be deleted | End Discord processes; if the file remains locked, restart and delete it before opening Discord. |
| The installer will not launch | Download a fresh copy from Discord, check account permissions and security blocks, then test administrator mode. |
| Discord works in a browser but not on the desktop | Focus on the local installation, updater files, permissions, and security software. |
| Other desktop apps also fail to install or remove | Try Microsoft’s Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter and investigate Windows installer problems. |
| The clean reinstall fails more than once | Collect the error details and contact Discord Support. |
Collect details for Discord Support
Contact Discord Support if the clean reinstall fails more than once, you see a specific error code, Windows cannot access or create files, the issue persists across networks, security policy may be involved, or multiple Windows applications are affected. Discord’s installer article directs users to support if its listed steps do not resolve the issue.

Include the exact error message, your Windows 10 edition and build, whether the browser version works, whether you completed the clean reinstall, and whether the problem also occurs on another network. If you can locate useful updater logs, include relevant excerpts rather than unrelated files. Community reports mention possible locations such as %LocalAppData%SquirrelTemp and %AppData%Discordlogs, but these are not established here as a guaranteed current logging layout; see this community report about updater logs. Do not delete those or other diagnostic folders as part of the reinstall unless support asks you to.
Use Discord in a browser while troubleshooting
If your account is reachable there, use Discord’s web app temporarily. It lets you continue using Discord while you troubleshoot the desktop client; it does not repair the Windows installation.
