No—The Outer Worlds is not established as a free game right now. The alert most likely referred to Epic Games Store’s one-week giveaway of The Outer Worlds: Spacer’s Choice Edition in April 2024. That promotion has ended; current Epic and Steam listings showed the edition at a US$39.99 purchase price during the August 2026 check, although prices and availability can change. Xbox may offer access through qualifying Game Pass plans, which is subscription access rather than permanent ownership.
What the original free-game alert meant
A contemporary report described Epic’s April 2024 promotion as a limited one-week claim for The Outer Worlds: Spacer’s Choice Edition, reportedly following an earlier Christmas Day giveaway. The report is evidence of that historical promotion, not proof of a current offer: contemporary giveaway report.
The exact official start and end timestamps were not independently confirmed, so a new article should not invent a deadline or present the old controls as if they were still live. Unless the official Epic listing shows a zero-dollar checkout and a visible end time, treat the alert as expired.
Which edition was included?
The giveaway concerned The Outer Worlds: Spacer’s Choice Edition, released March 7, 2023—not simply the original base-game listing. Store descriptions identify it as the complete version containing:

What “free” did—and did not—mean
- Limited giveaway: A qualifying account could claim the title during the promotional window. This is different from a permanent free-to-play release.
- Subscription access: A Game Pass entitlement lasts only while the subscription, plan, region and catalogue listing permit access.
- Free weekend: Temporary play time does not necessarily add a game to your library.
- Discount: A reduced price is still a purchase.
- Free upgrade: An upgrade route generally requires ownership of specified base-game and DLC licenses.
An Epic claim is tied to the Epic account and does not automatically create a Steam, Xbox or PlayStation license. Do not assume the PC promotion applies to console editions.

Can you still claim it?
There is no evidence here of an active August/September 2026 giveaway. Check the official store directly rather than relying on a recycled headline:
- Open the official Epic listing and confirm the edition name, your region and the checkout total.
- If the button shows a normal purchase price, the giveaway is not active. During a real promotion, the checkout should show zero cost and an end date or countdown.
- For a purchase, compare the Steam listing and its current regional price.
- Xbox players should check the Xbox page for current purchase, cloud-play and Game Pass eligibility.
During the historical Epic promotion, the normal process was to sign in, select the giveaway’s Get button, complete the zero-dollar checkout and install through the Epic Games Launcher. Those instructions are historical; do not expect the button to remain after the deadline.

If you claimed it before
Look in the Epic Games Launcher library under the account used for the claim. The license remains an Epic entitlement and is installed and launched through that launcher. It will not unlock the Steam app or a console copy, and it cannot normally be transferred between storefronts.
What kind of game is it?
The Outer Worlds is a single-player, first-person action RPG from Obsidian Entertainment and Private Division. You awaken aboard a colonist ship and explore the Halcyon colony while choosing how to handle factions, companions and competing corporate interests.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Spacer’s Choice Edition worth buying?
Why it makes sense
- You receive the base game and both story expansions together.
- Faction and dialogue decisions support replaying with different builds and alliances.
- The remaster adds listed visual and environmental improvements to the original release.
Reasons to compare first
- The remaster has higher PC requirements than the original release.
- Storefront reviews are not uniformly positive, so visual upgrades do not guarantee that every PC will have a better experience.
- If you already own the original and both expansions, an upgrade may be cheaper than buying the complete edition again.
Xbox lists an upgrade route for some owners of the base game and associated DLC; Game Pass access may not qualify for identical upgrade pricing. Details are on the upgrade page and Microsoft’s edition announcement.

PC requirements and platform choices
Steam lists these minimum Windows requirements for Spacer’s Choice Edition:
| Requirement | Listed minimum |
|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 64-bit |
| Memory | 12 GB RAM |
| Graphics | NVIDIA GTX 1060 6 GB or AMD Radeon RX 590 |
| Storage | 62 GB |
These are storefront requirements, not a guarantee of a particular frame rate. Older PCs may be better suited to the original edition if it remains available in the reader’s chosen store.
| Platform | What the current evidence supports | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Epic Games Store | Historical April 2024 giveaway; listing showed a purchase signal during the August 2026 check. | Players who want an Epic PC license. |
| Steam | Separate PC edition; US$39.99 price signal during the August 2026 check. | Players who prefer Steam features and library management. |
| Xbox | Purchase and cloud play through qualifying Game Pass plans, subject to region and catalogue status. | Xbox users already paying for an eligible plan. |
| PlayStation or Switch | The Epic PC giveaway does not provide entitlement on these platforms. | Check each platform’s own store. |
Prices are volatile: Epic and Steam each surfaced US$39.99 during the August 2026 research check, but currency, tax, regional availability and sales can change. A subscription is not permanent ownership or guaranteed offline access.
How to avoid fake “free key” offers
- Navigate directly to Epic, Steam or Xbox instead of a social-media redirect.
- Do not download an executable, browser extension or “key generator” to claim a game.
- Reject pages demanding payment details for a supposedly free key or requiring surveys.
- Avoid torrents, cracked copies and unofficial Steam-key sites.
- Check the exact edition name, zero-dollar checkout and promotion end time before claiming.
Bottom line
The alert was legitimate as a historical Epic promotion for The Outer Worlds: Spacer’s Choice Edition, but it was not a permanent free release. Readers who missed the April 2024 window should use the official Epic or Steam listings, check qualifying Xbox Game Pass access, or wait for a legitimate sale—not a third-party “free key.”
