Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallFor most players, OBS Studio is the best free game recorder because it offers detailed control over recording, audio, scenes, and streaming without a watermark or recording cap. For a quicker setup, use Xbox Game Bar; if you have a GeForce or Radeon GPU, try its built-in recording tools first. Medal is geared toward saving and sharing clips, while Bandicam is a simpler paid option with a restricted free version.
The right choice depends on whether you want to record a whole session, save the last few moments, detect highlights, or produce a polished video. No recorder guarantees the same performance or compatibility on every game and PC.

Choose by recording workflow and hardware
Decide what you need to save
- Manual recording: Start and stop a file yourself. OBS, Game Bar, NVIDIA App, AMD Adrenalin, and Bandicam all suit this general task.
- Instant replay: A temporary buffer keeps recent gameplay so a hotkey can save the preceding moments. It is not a full-session recording. Buffer length and quality affect memory, storage, and system load.
- Automatic highlights: Some tools can detect events in supported games. Detection depends on the game and its integration; it may miss moments or save clips you do not want.
- Creator recording: If you need webcam layouts, multiple scenes, overlays, independent audio sources, or a repeatable recording setup, OBS is the best fit among these choices.
Start with the GPU in your PC
| Hardware | First option to try | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| NVIDIA GeForce | NVIDIA App recording | Requires supported GeForce hardware and software; features depend on GPU and driver. |
| AMD Radeon | AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition | Menu labels, encoder and codec availability can vary by GPU generation and Adrenalin release. |
| Intel graphics or mixed hardware | OBS, Game Bar, or Medal | Check which encoder and capture modes the particular PC supports. |
| Laptop with integrated and discrete graphics | A GPU-native recorder, or OBS with GPU assignment checked | Hybrid graphics can put the game and OBS on different GPUs, breaking OBS Game Capture. See the OBS GPU selection guide. |
| GPU not known | Game Bar for simplicity; OBS for control | Check Windows Graphics settings or the PC maker’s specifications before choosing a vendor-specific tool. |
Know what “free” means
- Free and open source: OBS Studio.
- Included with Windows: Xbox Game Bar.
- Free but hardware-dependent: NVIDIA App recording and AMD Adrenalin recording.
- Freemium: Medal promotes a free core product with optional premium features.
- Restricted free version: Bandicam’s unregistered version limits each recording to 10 minutes and adds a watermark, according to its official FAQ.
Compare the recorders
| Software | Windows and cost | Capture and workflow | Audio and sharing | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| OBS Studio | Windows download is available; free and open source. | Manual recording and configurable Replay Buffer; scenes and multiple capture sources; streaming support. | Advanced audio routing and separate tracks can be configured. Files are saved to a user-selected location; full editing requires another program. | Powerful but has the steepest setup and troubleshooting curve. |
| Xbox Game Bar | Built into Windows; Microsoft describes the feature for Windows gaming. Availability can vary with region and configuration. | Quick app or game recording; MP4 output. Not a scene-based production tool. | Captures system audio and can toggle the microphone; recordings go to VideosCaptures. |
Limited control over sources, tracks, encoders, and long-form workflows. |
| NVIDIA App recording | Free software for supported NVIDIA hardware. | Manual recording and instant replay through NVIDIA’s recording tools. | Use the NVIDIA overlay and settings to configure capture and save location. | Not a vendor-neutral choice; performance and codec options vary by hardware, driver, game, and settings. |
| AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition | Free software for supported AMD hardware. | Recording and replay features integrated into AMD’s software. | Options depend on the installed release and supported hardware. | Feature names, codecs, and behavior can change between driver releases. |
| Medal | Promoted as free on PC and mobile with optional premium features; its site describes Windows 10 or later support. | Clip-first replay workflow, game-dependent automatic highlights, organization, and sharing. The vendor advertises capture up to 4K/144 FPS on supported setups; this is not a guaranteed result. | Medal advertises separate game, microphone, and Discord audio tracks, plus sharing features. | Less suited to production control or a local-only workflow; consider its background service and cloud-linked sharing model. |
| Bandicam | Commercial Windows recorder; free unregistered recordings have a 10-minute limit and watermark, per its FAQ. | Game, screen, webcam, and device capture. The vendor advertises DirectX, OpenGL, and Vulkan capture and up to 4K UHD/480 FPS under supported conditions. | Vendor lists game audio, microphone, and webcam capture; check current settings for the desired workflow. | Paid license needed to remove free-version restrictions; less suited to complex live production than OBS. Check the official purchase page for current terms. |
Maximum resolution and frame-rate figures are advertised capabilities, not promises that every PC can record a game at those settings. The actual result depends on capture source, GPU and encoder, codec, game load, bitrate, storage speed, thermals, and software version. Vendor performance claims such as “minimal impact” should not be treated as universal test results.
What affects recording quality and performance?
Resolution is only one setting
Output quality depends on resolution, frame rate, bitrate or quality-based rate control, codec, encoder preset, keyframe interval, color settings, and the complexity of the game’s motion. A well-configured 1080p recording can look better than a poorly configured 4K file. Choose settings based on the intended platform and available storage rather than the largest number a recorder advertises.

Hardware and software encoding
Hardware encoders such as NVIDIA NVENC, AMD hardware encoding, and Intel Quick Sync use supported GPU or media hardware. CPU-based software encoding, such as x264, uses the processor. Hardware encoding is a sensible starting point on many modern gaming PCs because it can reduce CPU workload, but it still uses system resources and does not guarantee zero frame loss. Quality and performance depend on encoder generation, settings, game load, and available headroom.
Audio deserves its own check
Before a long recording, confirm the game output, microphone, and (if needed) Discord are routed as intended. Check whether the recorder can adjust sources independently or put them on separate tracks. A single mixed track is harder to repair in editing. Bluetooth headset mode changes, Windows microphone permissions, sample-rate mismatches, and muted overlay controls can all lead to missing or poor audio.
Estimate storage before recording
For a rough estimate, divide bitrate in megabits per second by eight to get megabytes per second, then multiply by seconds recorded. At a steady 20 Mbps, that is about 2.5 MB/s, or roughly 9 GB for an hour before container overhead. At 50 Mbps, it is about 6.25 MB/s, or 22.5 GB per hour before overhead. Variable-bitrate recording changes the actual file size.

Configure OBS for gameplay
Build a basic scene
- Download OBS from the official download page.
- Create a scene for the game, then add a Game Capture source. Add microphone, webcam, or other sources only if you need them.
- In OBS settings, choose the recording path, resolution, frame rate, format, and encoder. Start with a supported hardware encoder if your GPU offers one; make a short test recording before a full session.
- Check the audio mixer while the game and microphone are active. Record a brief sample and play it back to confirm levels, sync, and which tracks are present.
- Use OBS’s statistics while recording to check for rendering lag, encoding lag, or dropped frames, then adjust settings if necessary.
Enable Replay Buffer for recent moments
- Open Settings → Output and select the Replay Buffer section or option in the output mode available in your OBS version.
- Enable the Replay Buffer and set the duration and memory limit appropriate for your system.
- Apply the settings, then open Settings → Hotkeys and assign keys to start/stop the buffer and save a replay.
- Start the buffer before gameplay. When you want to keep a moment, press the save-replay hotkey and confirm the clip appears in the configured recording folder.
A replay buffer retains recent encoded video temporarily; it does not silently save an entire match. Longer or higher-quality buffers use more resources, and a buffer that was not started cannot save earlier gameplay.

If that does not resolve it, try these checks one at a time:
- Run OBS at the same privilege level as the game.
- Try Window Capture or, as a fallback, Display Capture.
- Disable conflicting overlays one at a time and test borderless-windowed mode.
- Check whether the game’s anti-cheat, DRM, or capture mode blocks hooks. No recorder guarantees compatibility with every title.
Display Capture can include notifications, other open windows, or private information, so close or hide anything you do not want in the recording.
Microphone audio is missing
- Confirm the intended microphone is selected in both Windows and the recorder, and that Windows allows microphone access.
- Check the recorder’s mute control and input meter while speaking.
- Check whether the recording editor is playing the right audio track; separate tracks may not be mixed together during playback.
- If using Bluetooth, verify that the headset did not switch profiles. Also check sample-rate or exclusive-mode conflicts if sound is distorted or out of sync.
Video is choppy or the game slows down
Reduce the load systematically rather than assuming the recorder is the only cause. Check OBS statistics if using OBS, GPU and CPU utilization, available disk space, and whether the recording drive can sustain writes. Then test these changes:

- Switch to a supported hardware encoder if the current encoder is overloading the CPU.
- Lower output resolution or frame rate, then reduce bitrate or choose a suitable quality-based mode.
- Record to a fast local drive rather than a slow external or nearly full drive.
- Close unnecessary overlays and background applications; shorten the replay buffer.
- Check temperatures and power behavior, especially on a laptop, and compare capture modes.
HDR footage looks washed out or wrong
HDR capture depends on the Windows build, game, GPU, recorder, codec, and editing software. A mismatch between HDR gameplay and an SDR viewing or editing workflow can produce washed-out color. Test a short clip in the editor and player you actually use, and check the recorder’s color format and range before relying on a long capture.
Which recorder fits each kind of player?
- YouTube videos, tutorials, or complex layouts: OBS, because scenes and source control suit planned production. Use a separate video editor for cutting and polishing.
- Twitch stream plus local recording: OBS, which supports streaming and configurable recording in one production setup.
- Competitive player saving a clutch: NVIDIA App on supported GeForce hardware, AMD Adrenalin on supported Radeon hardware, or OBS Replay Buffer if you want a configurable cross-vendor workflow.
- Casual player who wants one shortcut: Xbox Game Bar.
- Clips organized for quick sharing: Medal, if its sharing and background-service model suits you.
- Long sessions without a watermark: OBS is the clearest free recommendation here. NVIDIA and AMD tools may also suit owners of supported hardware; check their settings and capabilities on your PC.
- Intel-only or unknown graphics: Try Game Bar for simplicity or OBS for broader control; confirm available encoders before setting quality targets.
- Laptop user with hybrid graphics: A GPU-native recorder may be simpler, while OBS needs its GPU assignment checked if Game Capture fails.
When is paid software worth it?
Paying can make sense when a simpler interface or a particular capture workflow saves time, or when a free version’s restrictions block the job. Bandicam’s free watermark and 10-minute-per-recording limit are concrete reasons to compare its paid license if you prefer its workflow. Its vendor advertises Windows 10 and 11 support, several game capture APIs, hardware acceleration, and high-resolution capture under supported conditions; check its feature page and purchase page for current terms.
OBS and the GPU-vendor tools can already meet many recording needs without a paid recorder. Also, recording software is not the same as editing software: OBS saves footage but is not a full non-linear editor. A slow drive, full disk, or poor microphone may be the actual obstacle, not the recorder. Consider extra storage or audio equipment only if it solves a problem you have identified.
Final choice
Choose OBS for the most control, Game Bar for the simplest built-in capture, your GPU vendor’s tool for convenient instant replay, Medal for a clip-and-sharing workflow, or Bandicam if you specifically want a simpler paid Windows recorder. Make a short test recording with your game, microphone, and intended settings before trusting any tool with a full session.
