Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteYes—if you use PlayStation Portal’s cloud-streaming mode, you can play supported PS5 games without owning a PS5. The feature launched on November 5, 2025, but it is not a replacement for every Portal function: cloud streaming requires PlayStation Plus Premium, an adult PlayStation account, a supported region and a reliable broadband connection. Portal’s original Remote Play mode still requires a paired PS5.
What changed for PlayStation Portal
Cloud Streaming gives PlayStation Portal its own connection to Sony’s servers. A compatible game runs remotely and sends video and audio to the handheld, so your home console does not need to be switched on or connected to the session.

At launch, Sony said Premium members could stream select digital PS5 games they own, plus compatible titles from the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog and Classics Catalog. Sony described thousands of supported PS5 games from users’ digital libraries, but availability changes by title, region and time. Owning a digital PS5 game does not automatically mean it can be streamed.
Sony says cloud streaming also lets one person play on Portal while another person uses the PS5 under a separate account, or watches a movie on the console.

Cloud Streaming and Remote Play are different modes
| Question | Cloud Streaming | Remote Play |
|---|---|---|
| Is a PS5 required? | No. The game runs from Sony’s cloud servers. | Yes. Portal connects to a paired PS5. |
| Is PlayStation Plus Premium required? | Yes. | No PlayStation Plus membership is required for Remote Play. |
| Where does the game come from? | Eligible digital purchases, PlayStation Plus Game Catalog titles and Classics Catalog titles. | Games installed or otherwise available on the paired PS5. |
| Can someone else use the PS5? | Yes, including use under another account while your cloud session runs. | No. Your session depends on the paired console. |
| Does region and network quality matter? | Yes. Both supported-country availability and internet performance apply. | Yes. Performance depends on the connection between Portal and the PS5. |
Portal is not compatible with PS4 consoles for Remote Play. Cloud Streaming is selected from a separate Portal home-screen experience rather than the Remote Play connection to a PS5.
What you need to stream without a PS5
- PlayStation Plus Premium: Cloud streaming on Portal requires an active Premium subscription. It renews automatically until cancelled under the terms Sony shows for the subscription.
- An adult PlayStation account: Sony does not offer Portal cloud streaming to child accounts.
- A supported country or region: Sony’s listed locations are Canada, the United States, Japan, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, the Republic of Cyprus, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. Check Sony’s current list because availability can change.
- Broadband internet: Sony lists 5 Mbps upload and download as the minimum to establish a session, 7 Mbps for 720p and 13 Mbps for 1080p. Its launch guidance recommends at least 15 Mbps for a better general Portal experience. These are thresholds, not guarantees; Wi-Fi congestion, latency and the individual game can still affect play.
Which games can you play?
Your digital library
Premium members may see eligible PS5 games they have purchased digitally. Eligibility is title-specific, and Sony’s supported list can change. Do not assume that every digital PS5 purchase is streamable.

PlayStation Plus catalogs
Compatible games from the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog and Classics Catalog can also appear for streaming. Catalog membership and cloud-streaming eligibility are separate conditions: a game must be included in the relevant catalog and supported for cloud play in your location at that time.
How to verify a title
Check the current cloud-streaming library shown on Portal or Sony’s latest support and catalog information before relying on a particular game. A title’s availability may differ between countries and may change after it is added to or removed from a catalog.

Internet quality and the 1080p setting
In March 2026, Sony added a selectable 1080p High Quality mode for both Remote Play and Cloud Streaming. Sony describes it as using a higher bitrate than the default 1080p Standard mode. After changing the setting, you must restart the session for it to apply.
The higher-quality mode cannot overcome an unstable connection. If a session stutters, drops resolution or disconnects, test the connection near the router, reduce competing traffic and compare the Standard mode before assuming the Portal hardware or game is at fault.

Who benefits most from the PS5-free option?
- People who do not own a PS5: Portal can now serve as a cloud-streaming handheld, provided the account, Premium, country and game requirements are met.
- Households sharing one console: A Premium subscriber can play a cloud session while another person uses the PS5 under a different account.
- Existing PS5 owners: Remote Play remains useful for games that are not cloud-eligible and does not require Premium, while Cloud Streaming can free the console for someone else.
Sony reported that cloud-streaming monthly users grew 162% year over year in January, based on December 2025-to-January 2026 data, and that more than 50% of PS Portal users were Premium subscribers. These are Sony-reported figures rather than independently audited measurements.
Audio options for Portal
For private play, Portal supports a wired headset or earbuds through its 3.5 mm jack. It also works with PlayStation Link audio products such as PULSE Explore and PULSE Elite. Sony’s compatibility guidance is the authority for supported audio categories.
