PlayStation’s official listing describes it as an action RPG rooted in Chinese mythology and gives the PS5 release date as August 20, 2024.
That literary foundation gives the game unusual cultural weight. It is not merely borrowing a familiar character: it presents a modern, internationally marketed interpretation of one of China’s defining stories. As the game attracted a large global audience, scrutiny of the company behind it became part of how many players encountered the adaptation.

What the sexism reporting actually documented
On November 20, 2023, GameDeveloper summarized an IGN investigation into public statements by Game Science leadership and other communications. The Guardian later described the material as a compilation of crude and vulgar comments from staff, alongside interviews with women about sexism in games and in China.
The important qualification is what those reports did not establish. GameDeveloper explicitly said that alleged behavior inside the studio was not verified by the investigation as described. The available reporting therefore supports scrutiny of public comments and recruiting-related communications; it does not prove that every employee behaved in the same way or that the company’s entire internal culture can be inferred from those materials.
Public comments are not the same as proven workplace conduct
“Game Science has a history of sexism” can mean several different things in casual discussion. In the documented accounts, it refers primarily to public comments and communications attributed to people connected with the company. It should not be silently expanded into a finding that all staff harassed colleagues, that every workplace practice was discriminatory, or that the game itself demonstrates those allegations.

PC Gamer published a similar exchange on August 20. Through a translator, the representative said, “We have no comment, we’re sorry,” followed by, “We’re only looking to answer questions related to the game and the gameplay.” The sources reviewed here do not establish a substantive later response after that launch coverage, so claims that the company has “never responded” go beyond the evidence.
Who sent the “feminist propaganda” guidelines?
During the August 2024 early-access period, some creators were told not to discuss a list of subjects that included “feminist propaganda,” Covid-19 and Chinese game-industry policy. The restrictions were not universal: WIRED noted that conventional press outlets such as Polygon and Kotaku received ordinary review embargoes rather than those topic rules.
Attribution matters. WIRED reported that the instructions appeared to originate with co-publisher Hero Games. That is a qualified finding, not proof that Game Science itself issued every restriction. Writer and researcher Rui Zhong told WIRED, “That Game Science put those guidelines out were in part the preferences of the company and not the government.” Zhong’s statement is an interpretation of the guidelines’ significance, not an official determination of their authorship.
Why the restrictions changed the conversation
A normal review embargo controls when coverage can appear. A list that names political, social or gender-related subjects controls what an invited creator may discuss. That distinction made the guidelines newsworthy in their own right and encouraged some creators and critics to address the prohibited topics rather than avoid them.

It also created an avoidable association between the game’s launch campaign and the earlier reports about sexist public comments. Even if a particular restriction came from a publishing partner rather than the developer, audiences could reasonably ask how responsibility was divided among Game Science, Hero Games and the people managing access.

The game’s commercial reach made the dispute harder to contain within a niche industry debate. The Guardian reported that Game Science said Black Myth: Wukong sold 10 million copies in three days. Because the number comes from the developer as reported by The Guardian, it should not be presented as independently audited.
A widely played adaptation of a canonical Chinese story can become a cultural reference point far beyond its original marketing audience. None of those judgments requires claiming that every developer shared offensive views, nor does enjoying the game require dismissing the reporting. Critics should identify which evidence they are discussing—public posts, recruiting material, a quoted company response or an outside interpretation—rather than using “sexism” as a label for facts the sources do not establish.
