Ubisoft launched a Decentralized Verification Network (DVN) with LayerZero on April 30, 2025, to verify cross-chain messages involved in moving digital assets such as NFTs and in-game currencies. It is a verification service within LayerZero’s messaging system—not a new blockchain, and not evidence that players can already transfer items between Ubisoft games.
What Ubisoft launched
Ubisoft’s DVN is intended to help secure messages and asset transfers between blockchain networks using LayerZero’s omnichain messaging infrastructure. Contemporary coverage reported support for more than 130 blockchains at launch, citing Ethereum, Solana and Polygon as examples. The announcement named NFTs and in-game currencies among the kinds of assets the infrastructure could support. VentureBeat’s April 30, 2025 report and BlockchainGamerBiz’s coverage describe the launch and its intended role.
That chain count is a launch-era figure, not a promise that every chain was equally available to Ubisoft players or that every Ubisoft asset could move between them. LayerZero’s current site advertises 160+ supported blockchains, a later, protocol-wide figure that should not be confused with Ubisoft’s April 2025 announcement. LayerZero’s interoperability page presents the current figure.
How a LayerZero DVN verifies a message
A DVN is not a blockchain or a conventional bridge by itself. LayerZero describes DVNs as verification services, combining smart contracts with off-chain infrastructure. Their job is to check a cross-chain message before the destination application accepts it. LayerZero’s DVN overview explains the service’s role in verifying a message’s payload hash.

- A source game or application emits a message through LayerZero.
- DVNs selected for that application observe the source-chain event and independently verify the message hash using their own methods.
- The DVNs submit their verification to the destination chain’s Message Library.
- The configured required DVNs and any optional-verifier threshold must approve the message.
- An executor, or another caller, can then commit and deliver the verified message for the destination contract to process.
LayerZero calls its configurable threshold approach “X-of-Y-of-N”: an application can require designated DVNs and set how many additional optional DVNs must verify a message. This gives an application a choice of security configuration rather than imposing one fixed verifier set. LayerZero’s security-stack documentation describes the model.
Verification methods can differ. LayerZero documents approaches including multisignature committees, zero-knowledge proofs, light clients, native-bridge verification and other specialized systems. The choice affects the trust assumptions and operational characteristics of the pathway; “DVN” names a role, not one universal verification technology. See LayerZero’s worker-services documentation and its protocol architecture overview.

Why a game publisher might operate a DVN
A game asset can be represented on one chain while another game or application runs on a different chain. To move or use it across that boundary, a system must establish that the source message is authentic and that the destination acts only after the required checks. The application also needs rules for preserving ownership and metadata and for preventing an item from being duplicated or changed improperly.
A publisher-specific verification service could give Ubisoft more control over the verification policy for its blockchain projects and let it configure security across different networks. LayerZero’s framework also allows applications to select and combine verifiers. That does not mean Ubisoft owns the chains involved, controls every part of LayerZero, or has made its particular DVN available for general developer onboarding. The broader LayerZero framework is permissionless, but the public launch material does not establish a public onboarding process for Ubisoft’s service.

What this does—and does not—mean for players
The announcement describes infrastructure that could support cross-chain transfers; it does not document a player-facing transfer feature. The available launch material does not identify a Ubisoft game using the DVN, a specific asset contract, a public interface, a launch-day transaction flow, a fee schedule, or a feature that lets players move an item between two live Ubisoft games.
LayerZero-associated ONFT and OFT standards are technical options for representing omnichain non-fungible and fungible assets. Their existence does not establish that Ubisoft’s existing items use those standards or are automatically portable. Each transfer route would need compatible source and destination contracts, an explicit asset-transfer design, ownership and metadata rules, a security configuration, and a game feature or interface that exposes it.

Even a technically successful transfer would not guarantee that the destination game recognizes the item, gives it gameplay utility, or preserves its scarcity and metadata. Players would also need compatible wallets and a reason to move the asset; the specialist BlockchainGamerBiz report noted that the practical need for transfers was unclear without a concrete in-game use.

Using multiple verifiers can reduce reliance on one service, but it does not make a transfer risk-free or automatically trustless. Security depends on which DVNs an application requires, how many optional DVNs must respond, their implementation and operational independence, confirmation settings, and the security of the application’s contracts and logic. LayerZero presents those choices as a trade-off among security, cost and operational requirements in its DVN security-stack documentation.

- Verifier outage or threshold failure: If a required DVN is unavailable, or too few optional DVNs respond, a message may be delayed or unable to proceed.
- Correlated dependencies: Verifiers that appear independent may share infrastructure, code or data sources, weakening the value of having several.
- Contract or configuration flaws: DVN checks cannot repair a bug in an asset contract or compensate for a weak security configuration.
- Chain finality: Chains differ in confirmation and reorganization risks, which affect when a source event should be treated as dependable.
- Application mismatch: A verified message can still fail if the destination application does not support the asset, its metadata or the requested action.
- Product and policy limits: Fees, wallet support, marketplace liquidity, platform rules and regional regulation can all constrain a feature even when the message layer works.
For any supported pathway, developers need to examine the selected DVNs, thresholds, block confirmations, provider independence, upgrade controls, and source and destination contracts. LayerZero’s DVN provider directory lists deployments; a provider listing alone does not establish that a particular Ubisoft pathway is configured or available.
What the launch signals for Ubisoft and LayerZero
For Ubisoft, the DVN is a strategic infrastructure step: a publisher-operated verification service could be reused or tailored across projects on different chains. It does not by itself demonstrate player adoption, a successful secondary market, interoperability between unrelated Ubisoft games, lower fees, faster transactions, or a change in Ubisoft’s mainstream game strategy.
For LayerZero, the partnership offers an endorsement from a major traditional game publisher and a potential example of an application choosing its own verification setup. VentureBeat reported LayerZero figures at the time of launch of more than 130 connected chains, more than 400 applications and more than 140 million cross-chain messages. These were company or protocol figures reported in 2025, not independently audited performance metrics. VentureBeat’s launch report provides that context.
The consequential test is whether Ubisoft or other developers turn verification infrastructure into supported game features that players want to use. A DVN can check a message against a chosen security policy; it cannot, on its own, create a reason for an item to travel between games.
