How to Turn On Your Wii: Power, Remote, and Troubleshooting

Connect the Wii’s AC adapter, choose the correct TV input, and press the console’s Power button. Here’s how remote startup, Sensor Bar setup, and common power or picture problems work.

Connect the Wii’s AC adapter to the console and a wall outlet, turn on the TV and select the input the Wii uses, then press the console’s Power button. A synchronized Wii Remote can also turn it on, but the Sensor Bar is not needed for startup—it is needed for normal pointer control.

What you need before turning on a Wii

  • Wii console and its correct AC adapter. Plug the adapter’s DC connector into the console’s rear DC input, then plug the adapter into a wall outlet. Nintendo’s North American setup manual specifies a 120-volt AC outlet. Use the adapter made for your console; do not assume adapters are interchangeable. Nintendo Wii setup manual.
  • TV and video connection. Connect the Wii AV cable, component cable, or a compatible converter to the TV. You will need to select the matching TV input separately.
  • Wii Remote and batteries, if you want to use one. You can start the console without a remote.
  • Sensor Bar, if you plan to point with a Wii Remote. Connect it to the Sensor Bar connector on the Wii’s back and place it above or below the TV. It is not a power connection.

Turn on the console and get the Wii Menu

  1. Set the Wii on a stable surface with its vents unobstructed. Connect the AC adapter to the rear of the console and a wall outlet.
  2. Connect the video cable to the TV or compatible converter. If you will use the Wii Remote pointer, connect the Sensor Bar and position it above or below the screen.
  3. Turn on the TV and use its input/source control to choose the port connected to the Wii—such as AV, component, or the HDMI input used by a converter.
  4. Press the console’s physical Power button on the front. The power indicator should show that the console is on, and the Wii startup display or Wii Menu should appear if the TV is showing the correct input.
  5. If prompted, press A on a synchronized Wii Remote to continue. On a first-time or reset setup, follow the prompts for language, Sensor Bar position, date and time, widescreen, console nickname, country, optional parental controls, and the screen-burn-in reduction notice. Nintendo’s setup steps are at Wii first-time setup.

The console, television, and Wii Remote are separate devices: starting the Wii does not turn on every TV, and turning on a remote does not necessarily start the console. If the Wii seems to start but the screen stays blank, check the TV input before assuming the console has failed.

Turn on the Wii with a Wii Remote

Remote startup is optional. The remote needs working batteries and must be synchronized with the console in Standard Mode; Nintendo says only a Wii Remote or Wii Remote Plus synchronized in that mode can turn the Wii on or off. Press the remote’s Power button. If it does not start the console, use the console’s physical Power button, then synchronize the remote in Standard Mode. Nintendo’s Wii Remote synchronization instructions.

Synchronize a remote in Standard Mode

  1. Turn on the Wii using its console Power button.
  2. Open the front SD Card Slot cover on a regular Wii. Remove the Wii Remote battery cover.
  3. Press and release the red SYNC button beneath the remote’s batteries.
  4. While the remote’s player LEDs are blinking, press and release the red SYNC button inside the Wii’s SD Card Slot.
  5. Synchronization is complete when one Player LED remains lit.

On a Wii mini, the console’s SYNC button is on the left side near the battery compartment rather than inside an SD Card Slot. If a remote remains unreliable, remove its batteries for one minute, reinstall them, turn on the Wii from the console, and repeat Standard Mode synchronization. Nintendo’s manual also describes clearing saved synchronization data by holding the console SYNC button for about 15 seconds from the Health and Safety screen; use that as an advanced recovery step, not the first attempt.

If the Wii turns on but the TV shows no picture

  1. Confirm the TV is on and select the exact input used by the Wii cable. A Wii can be running while the TV displays a blank screen or another source.
  2. Check that both ends of the AV or other video cable are firmly connected to the Wii and TV.
  3. If using an HDMI converter, confirm it is powered and select the TV’s HDMI input for that converter.
  4. Try another compatible TV input or display, if available, to isolate a cable, converter, or input issue.

Connection compatibility depends on the TV’s inputs and any converter in use; no single video connection works with every modern TV. A red power light can mean the console is in standby rather than actively running, so press the console Power button once and check the TV source before treating a blank screen as a hardware failure.

If the Wii has no power light or shuts off quickly

Check the power path first. Nintendo notes that a surge or accessory can trip protection in the AC adapter. Work through these checks in order:

  3. Unplug the adapter from the wall for at least two minutes, then reconnect it and try the console again.

Do not open the console or attempt an electrical repair unless qualified. For an older or secondhand system, Nintendo warns that warranty coverage does not apply to secondhand products and older parts may no longer be available; see its guidance on older products.

If the Wii Remote lights up but does not work

The LEDs blink, then go out

The remote is not currently synchronized with the console. Replace weak batteries if needed, turn on the Wii with the console button, and follow the Standard Mode sync steps above. Nintendo’s remote troubleshooting guidance is available at Wii Remote and setup support.

The remote works, but the pointer or cursor is missing

The Sensor Bar is used for pointer control, not to power the Wii. Confirm it is plugged into the Wii’s rear Sensor Bar connector—not merely sitting near the TV. Center it directly above the screen or on the front edge of the surface below the screen; do not put it on a lower shelf where the TV blocks it. In System Settings, set the Sensor Bar position to match its physical placement. Nintendo’s placement instructions are at Sensor Bar connection and placement.

  • Use the remote about 3–10 feet from the TV, generally facing the screen.
  • Reduce nearby infrared interference from bright sunlight, reflective surfaces, fireplaces, candles, stoves, or infrared heaters.
  • Check that the remote’s pointer lens is clean and not covered by a sticker or a misaligned jacket.
  • A phone or digital camera may show the Sensor Bar’s infrared lights, but some cameras filter infrared and will not display them. This test is not conclusive on every device. Nintendo’s Sensor Bar camera test.

If the cursor still will not appear, Nintendo’s Wii Remote and cursor troubleshooting provides additional checks.

The pointer moves erratically

Check for reflective objects or infrared heat sources near the TV, confirm the Sensor Bar is centered and unobstructed, and make sure the Wii’s Above TV/Below TV setting matches its location. A working remote with erratic pointer behavior points to the Sensor Bar setup or interference rather than console startup.

Where the Power button is, and how to turn the Wii off

On the original Wii (RVL-001), Wii Family Edition (RVL-101), and Wii mini (RVL-201), use the clearly marked Power button on the console’s front face. The remote’s Power button is an alternative only when that remote is synchronized in Standard Mode. To shut down for ordinary use, press the console Power button or a qualifying remote Power button once and allow the system to turn off; holding the button is not the preferred routine shutdown method.

Wii mini and Wii U distinctions

The Wii mini uses a different location for its console SYNC button, noted above, and does not have Wi-Fi capability. Its menu and connectivity features are not identical to every other Wii model. This guide is for the original Wii family, not Wii U: a Wii U GamePad’s sensor functionality does not replace the Sensor Bar on an original Wii for normal Wii Remote pointing. Do not assume Wii and Wii U power adapters are interchangeable.
