The Digital Pets Company announced AI-powered, 3D virtual dogs on April 12, 2022, but the evidence supports an early proof of concept and an ambitious NFT roadmap more clearly than a completed, widely interoperable metaverse product. Its proposed dogs would combine Ethereum NFTs with the company’s PetOS software, while Laika served as the public demonstration.
What The Digital Pets Company actually announced
GamesBeat reported the announcement as a plan for persistent digital companions that could appear in virtual reality, augmented reality, mobile apps, web applications and games. The company said each dog would be linked to an Ethereum NFT through its PetOS software layer. The announcement described a product under development, not a finished commercial ecosystem; GamesBeat characterized Laika as a proof of concept and said the digital laboratory was still being finalized.
The concept was not a robot, a digital copy of a household pet or an ordinary game character. These were intended to be AI-driven 3D companions with individual appearances, personalities, training histories and, eventually, breeding capabilities.

Laika: the demonstrated part of the project
Laika was presented as the company’s first digital dog and public proof of concept. The company said she could respond to voice commands, bark, chase her tail, spin and perform movements such as backflips. Its own site describes Laika as an early version that still required substantial work to become more intelligent and autonomous.

That distinction matters: a working demonstration of selected commands does not establish general autonomous intelligence, a production service or compatibility with other games.
How the proposed dog lifecycle worked
- DNA vial: A buyer would acquire one of a planned 10,000 digital DNA vials.
- Incubation: The vial would be placed in a virtual laboratory and used to adopt a Gen 0 embryo.
- Trait reveal: The embryo would develop into a dog with a combination of appearance and personality traits. The company said the first generation would be based on three community-selected breeds.
- Bonding and training: Interaction and positive reinforcement were intended to shape the dog’s development, skills and behavior.
- Social play and breeding: Owners were meant to socialize, compete with and potentially breed their dogs, producing new NFT offspring.
The site lists possible traits including markings, coat, cybernetic elements, intelligence, playfulness, curiosity, friendliness, adaptability, affection and energy. These descriptions are company specifications, not independently verified results from a completed 10,000-dog release.
What blockchain was supposed to add
According to GamesBeat and the company, each Digital Dog would use an Ethereum NFT, with ERC-721 cited as the expected token standard and metadata described as being hosted on IPFS. PetOS was supposed to connect the wallet-held token to the interactive dog. The company also described a proprietary system for shared care or ownership by families, friends, colleagues or DAO members.

An NFT is a transferable blockchain record; it is not automatically the dog’s artificial-intelligence model, its servers, its animations or a guarantee that every game will support it. A third-party application would still need to recognize the token, interpret its metadata, render the character and connect to the behavior systems. Token ownership also does not by itself grant copyright, commercial rights, perpetual access or control over the company’s software.
PetOS and the interoperability promise
PetOS was presented as the proprietary layer combining voice interaction, visual and gesture recognition, artificial intelligence, extended-reality environments and training systems. A future software development kit was intended to let a dog accompany its owner between virtual worlds, games, social applications, VR offices and events.
This was a platform ambition rather than a documented network of live integrations. The available material names no specific commercial game or metaverse world in which the dogs were already working. Interoperability would require technical integrations, business agreements, compatible character rigs, identity and permission systems, and continued operation of the company’s own services.

The planned $TREAT economy
The company described $TREAT as an ERC-20 ecosystem token. Its proposed uses included developing an embryo, naming a dog, customizing a private laboratory, training, buying food and toys, rewarding interactions, and entering competitions or breeding activities. The company also said users could earn or win $TREAT through interactions, competitions, breeding or selling embryos.
Those statements describe intended utility, not a verified investment product or functioning market. The available evidence does not establish a current contract, price, liquidity, exchange support, legal status or active economy for $TREAT. Anyone encountering a token or sale should verify the contract through an official project channel and treat unsolicited links as potential phishing attempts.

The planned model combined primary DNA-vial or NFT sales, secondary-market activity, in-world token spending, possible land sales, breeding and offspring sales, and future partnerships or SDK integrations. The official site listed a 6% company royalty on secondary NFT sales and said 1% of vial-sale proceeds would go to Guide Dogs of America; those are company claims, not independent confirmation of payments.

GamesBeat reported pre-seed backing from Outlier Ventures, Hawk Digital, MaxStealth and angel investor Rafi Gidron, and said the company had 10 employees in April 2022.
The social rationale was broader than collecting. Company executives told Ynet News and Ynet that virtual dogs could make it easier for people to meet and interact in digital spaces. The company explicitly said it was creating original virtual dogs rather than converting users’ real pets into digital versions.

The official website remains online and continues to describe NFTs, PetOS, $TREAT, breeding and cross-application use. However, its roadmap still displays historical labels such as “Q3 22’,” “Q4 22’” and “2023 & Beyond,” while several capabilities remain in future-tense or development language.

- Not verified from the available sources: that 10,000 vials were sold or minted, that a functioning $TREAT economy exists, that a production SDK is available, that major metaverse integrations are live, or what current sales volume and prices are.
The absence of confirmation is not proof that every initiative stopped, but the old roadmap dates and future-tense descriptions mean the project should not be presented as a proven, widely usable metaverse-pet service.
What a prospective user would need to check
- Whether an official mint, token or application is currently available and whether its contract address is published through an authentic project channel.
- What rights come with a token: artwork license, commercial use, breeding rights and access to software.
- Where metadata, animations, behavior data and account services are hosted, and what happens if the company’s servers go offline.
- How shared ownership, wallet recovery, permissions and breeding authorization work.
- What voice, video, gesture and behavioral data the AI features collect and how it is handled.
- Whether any claimed royalty is enforceable on the marketplace being used.
- All network fees, token liquidity, tax obligations and consumer protections in the user’s jurisdiction.
These checks are especially important because a token can remain in a wallet even if the interactive pet, metadata or supporting application no longer functions.
Bottom line
“Crypto dogs for the metaverse” was a genuine startup announcement for AI-powered NFT companions, not clear evidence of a completed metaverse launch. Laika showed an early interactive concept; the 10,000-dog lifecycle, $TREAT economy, breeding system and cross-world SDK were proposed roadmap elements. As of August 18, 2026, the project’s site still presents that vision, but the available evidence does not verify broad delivery or interoperability.
