Microsoft’s February 25, 2026 Xbox update raises cloud-streaming quality to up to 1440p for Game Pass Ultimate members on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One X and Xbox One S, while adding storage and shader tools to the ROG Xbox Ally family. The 1440p stream is adaptive—not a guarantee that every game, connection or screen will run at that resolution. Microsoft clarified the rollout in an editor’s note on February 26.
The same release includes Xbox PC app sounds, new handheld compatibility labels, catalog expansions and two Insider previews. Here is what is available now, what remains experimental and what the update means for an upgrade decision.
1440p cloud streaming: what changed
Cloud-playable games can now be delivered at a higher resolution and bitrate on supported Xbox consoles. Microsoft names Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One X and Xbox One S, and says the rollout is expanding across supported titles and regions. The console feature requires Xbox Game Pass Ultimate; it is not described as a benefit for every Game Pass tier. Microsoft’s announcement also notes that higher-bitrate streaming already exists on the Xbox PC app, handhelds, supported browsers, select Fire TV devices, LG TVs and Samsung TVs.
What “up to 1440p” means
1440p usually means 2560×1440 pixels—sharper than 1080p but below 4K. A higher bitrate can preserve fine detail and reduce banding or smeared textures, but cloud video is still encoded, decoded and adjusted continuously. “Up to” is an upper limit, not a fixed output: the title, service conditions and network can cause a lower stream.

- A 1440p monitor or television is needed to see the full pixel-level benefit. A 1080p screen cannot display it, while a 4K screen will scale the stream.
- Ethernet or a strong 5-GHz/6-GHz Wi-Fi connection gives the stream a better chance of maintaining quality. Microsoft does not state a universal minimum bandwidth in this announcement.
- Resolution does not guarantee lower input latency. Routing, server distance, Wi-Fi interference and controller connection still determine responsiveness.
- This is cloud streaming, not native 1440p rendering by Xbox One hardware and not Xbox Remote Play from your own console.
An independent report from Engadget likewise found the initial 1440p offer tied to Game Pass Ultimate, a supported game and a capable display.
Try it without guessing at a menu option
- Confirm that your console is an Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One X or Xbox One S.
- Install the latest console system update and sign in to the account that has Game Pass Ultimate.
- Launch a title that supports cloud play; test more than one game because support and behavior can differ.
- Use a 1440p-capable display and, where possible, wired Ethernet or stable 5-GHz/6-GHz Wi-Fi.
- If the picture stays at 1080p, check the account tier, title and region, display capability and network stability before treating it as a fault.

ROG Xbox Ally and Ally X improvements
Format removable storage during installation
On ROG Xbox Ally devices, the Xbox app can format removable storage as part of installing a game. Microsoft cites removable drives including officially licensed SanDisk microSD cards and intends the feature to make installing and running games from that storage simpler.
Formatting is destructive. Back up the card first; the process erases the selected device. Game performance still depends on sustained card speed, the workload, filesystem and firmware. A fast internal SSD remains preferable for some games, and this feature applies to the ROG Xbox Ally family named by Microsoft—not automatically to older ROG Ally generations.
See whether shaders were precompiled
The new Advanced Shader Delivery indicator appears on loading screens for supported games. Advanced Shader Delivery preloads shaders during download, which can reduce first-launch compilation work and related stutter. It cannot guarantee a frame rate or solve CPU/GPU limits, driver problems, thermal throttling, game settings or every kind of hitch. If no indicator appears, the title or installation may not support the feature.
Microsoft directs readers to separate ROG Ally patch notes for the complete handheld change list. The February update improves software workflow; it does not change the Ally’s built-in panel, battery capacity or the performance limits of a particular power mode.

Xbox PC app navigation sounds
Controller-navigation sounds were added to the Xbox PC app and are optional. Configure them under Settings > Audio.
Handheld Compatibility Program
Compatibility labels now appear on product pages across select Windows devices and in a handheld-compatible channel on supported Windows handhelds. February additions were:

- Cash Cleaner Simulator — Handheld Optimized
- Dragon Quest VII Reimagined — Handheld Optimized
- High on Life 2 — Handheld Optimized
- Reanimal — Mostly Compatible
- Starsand Island — Mostly Compatible
These labels are guidance, not promises of a particular frame rate, resolution, battery life or control layout.
Xbox Play Anywhere
Microsoft says more than 1,000 games now support Xbox Play Anywhere. A supported purchase can work on Xbox consoles, Windows PCs and supported handhelds without buying the same game again, with saves, add-ons and achievements carrying across devices. Cloud play can still require a Game Pass subscription. The catalog and entitlements are not identical to the Stream Your Own Game catalog.
Stream Your Own Game
Game Pass Ultimate, Premium and Essential subscribers can stream more than 1,000 games they own across supported devices, subject to the specific game, region, device and service. Owning a game therefore does not guarantee that its edition or downloadable content is streamable.
Mouse, keyboard, touch and Retro Classics
Microsoft lists more than 130 cloud games with mouse-and-keyboard support and more than 260 with touch controls, adding Company of Heroes 3, Hotel Barcelona and Transport Fever 2 to mouse-and-keyboard play. The update also adds titles to Retro Classics; availability depends on the catalog and region.

Insider features
Postgame Recaps
PC Gaming Preview Insiders can receive a recap after events such as earning a new achievement or playing a game for the first time. It can show achievements, captures, upcoming in-game events and feedback options. Customize it under Settings > App > Postgame. It is not a universal February feature for every PC Xbox user.
Refreshed Xbox Cloud Gaming web experience
Participating Xbox Insiders can opt into a public-preview browser interface with updated navigation and visual design. Microsoft warns that some functions may be limited or behave differently while the preview changes. A redesigned web interface does not prove that every browser client has 1440p output or feature parity with console and app clients.
Troubleshooting the common surprises
- No 1440p option or image: Verify Ultimate, console model, title support, region and display capability; the rollout may not have reached every account.
- Image remains soft: Adaptive bitrate, compression, display scaling or an unstable connection can limit clarity even when 1440p is eligible.
- High latency: A higher resolution is not a latency feature. Check Wi-Fi congestion, Ethernet, controller connection and distance to the service.
- Storage data disappeared: Formatting is the explanation; restore from your backup and do not format a card containing needed files.
- Game performs poorly from microSD: Card speed and game access patterns vary. Shader delivery addresses compilation work, not storage bottlenecks, thermals or graphics limits.
- No shader notice: The game or installation may not support Advanced Shader Delivery.
- No Postgame Recap: Join the PC Gaming Preview and remember that recaps appear only after qualifying events.
- Web preview looks different: That is expected during an Insider preview and can change between builds.
Should you upgrade or buy hardware for this update?
Existing Xbox owners
The feature is most worthwhile if you have Game Pass Ultimate, a 1440p/4K screen, cloud-supported games and a stable connection. A 1080p television or a library played almost entirely from downloads makes the visual change less significant.
Xbox One owners
One X and One S are specifically named for the cloud rollout, so the update can improve the ceiling of streamed play without turning the consoles into native 1440p machines. It does not alter downloaded-game rendering.
ROG Ally owners and buyers
The ROG Xbox Ally and Ally X gain practical storage setup and shader-status improvements. They are not required for 1440p cloud gaming, and the update does not make their built-in screens 1440p. Buyers who mainly stream should weigh Ultimate, network quality and display access more heavily than handheld GPU power; buyers seeking demanding native PC play should also consider internal storage, thermals and battery life.
Game Pass subscribers on other tiers
The console 1440p announcement identifies Ultimate. Premium and Essential are named for Stream Your Own Game, which is a separate entitlement. Do not upgrade tiers solely for 1440p unless you also value Ultimate’s broader catalog and cloud benefits.
For current subscription details, see Xbox Game Pass. For the handheld family, see ROG Xbox Ally. Microsoft’s original announcement and its February 26 clarification remain the authoritative feature list: February Xbox Update.
