Then update Windows and Store apps, repair Game Bar, and clear the Store cache. The message points to an account, Store, or app-registration problem; it does not prove that Game Bar itself is damaged or that Gaming Services is the cause. Work through the steps below in order, and use the advanced Gaming Services commands only if the ordinary fixes fail or other Xbox components are also broken.
What error 0x803F8001 means here
The reported Game Bar message says Windows cannot currently make the app available to the signed-in account. That can involve Microsoft Store availability or licensing checks, account selection, or the app’s Store registration. The hexadecimal code alone does not identify one definite cause. It is not, by itself, a graphics, controller, or game-performance diagnosis. The exact message has been reported in Microsoft Q&A.
Possible causes include a different account in Microsoft Store and Xbox, a damaged Store cache or Game Bar registration, missing or damaged Gaming Services, pending updates, or account, family, region, or organizational restrictions. Treat these as possibilities to test—not as a one-to-one definition of the code.
Choose the repair path based on what else is failing
- Only Game Bar fails: Check the account, update Windows and Store apps, then repair or reset Game Bar and clear the Store cache.
- The Xbox app or Game Pass games also fail: Check account sign-in first, then repair Xbox and Gaming Services. Reinstall Gaming Services only if the lower-risk steps do not help.
- Microsoft Store will not open or install apps: Fix the Store layer before repeatedly reinstalling Game Bar. Start with
wsreset.exe, updates, and Store repair options if available. - Only one game fails: Check that game’s account, ownership or subscription entitlement, and installation separately. A Game Bar error does not establish that the game itself is available to the account.
Microsoft documents Gaming Services installation and startup failures on Windows 10 under the different codes 0x80073D26 and 0x8007139F. That is relevant if Xbox components fail too, but it does not show that Gaming Services causes every 0x803F8001 case. See Microsoft’s Gaming Services article.

1. Check the Microsoft Store and Xbox accounts
- Open Microsoft Store and select the account or profile icon.
- If the wrong account is shown, sign out and sign in with the Microsoft account you intend to use for Xbox or Game Pass.
- Open the Xbox app and check that it is using the same intended account.
- Check that Windows has the correct date, time, time zone, and region settings. If the clock is incorrect, enable automatic time synchronization and restart.
- Restart Windows, then try Win + G.
If Store still does not offer Game Bar, check whether the account is subject to family settings, whether the app is available for the account’s country or region, and whether a work or school administrator has restricted Microsoft Store. Microsoft notes that Store app availability can depend on account, family settings, and region in its guidance on apps that cannot be found or installed from Microsoft Store. Avoid third-party app-package downloads.
2. Install Windows and Microsoft Store updates
- On most Windows 10 installations, go to Start → Settings → Update & Security → Windows Update → Check for updates. Install available updates.
- Open Microsoft Store → See more (…) → Downloads and updates → Get updates. Let Store update its apps.
- Restart Windows before checking Game Bar again.
These Windows 10 paths and the update sequence are in Microsoft’s Store app troubleshooting guidance. Menu names can vary by Windows 10 build.
3. Repair, then reset Xbox Game Bar
- Open Start → Settings → Apps → Apps & features.
- Find and select Xbox Game Bar, then choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair and test Game Bar with Win + G.
- If it still fails, return to the same screen, select Reset, and restart Windows before testing again.
Repair is the less disruptive option; Reset is more thorough and can remove Game Bar’s local app data and preferences. It is not the same as uninstalling installed games. Microsoft’s general app guidance recommends trying Repair before Reset; see Fix problems that block programs from being installed or removed. If the buttons are absent, the app may be packaged differently on that build or its installation may be damaged; continue to the Store steps rather than running unrelated removal commands.

4. Reset the Microsoft Store cache
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
wsreset.exeand select OK. - A blank Command Prompt window should appear briefly, then close as Microsoft Store opens.
- Restart Windows and try to launch or install Game Bar again.
This resets the Store cache; it is not a command to delete installed games. Microsoft describes the expected blank-window behavior in its Store installation troubleshooting guidance. If the Store does not open afterward, address Store availability or policy restrictions before attempting advanced Xbox package removal.

5. Reinstall Xbox Game Bar from Microsoft Store
- Open Microsoft Store and select See more (…) → My Library.
- Find Xbox Game Bar and select Install.
- If it is not listed, search the Store for Xbox Game Bar while signed into the intended account.
- Restart Windows after installation and test Win + G.
Microsoft’s Windows 10 Store-app instructions use My Library → Install to reinstall an affected app. If Game Bar is absent from search or cannot be installed, revisit the account, region, family, and Store-policy checks instead of downloading an unofficial package.
6. Repair Xbox, Gaming Services, or Store when multiple components fail
If the Xbox app or Game Pass games are affected too, use the Windows app-repair screen for each component that appears there. On most Windows 10 installations, go to Settings → Apps → Apps & features, select Xbox, Gaming Services, or Microsoft Store, and open Advanced options. Choose Repair, test the affected Xbox feature, and use Reset only if Repair does not help. Restart after resetting. Options vary by app and Windows build; Microsoft’s Store app guidance covers the general repair, reset, and reinstall workflow.

7. Reinstall Gaming Services only if Xbox components also fail
This is an advanced step, not the first fix for a Game Bar-only error. A procedure in Microsoft Q&A removes the Gaming Services package and opens its Store listing so it can be installed again. Q&A guidance is not the same as a general Microsoft Support article.
- Open PowerShell or Terminal as an administrator.
- Run the following command to remove Gaming Services for all users:
Get-AppxPackage Microsoft.GamingServices | Remove-AppxPackage -AllUsers
- Restart Windows.
- Open the Gaming Services Store listing by running this command in PowerShell, or by entering the URI in the Windows Run dialog:
start ms-windows-store://pdp/?productid=9MWPM2CQNLHN
- Install Gaming Services if Store offers it. Then open Xbox and check whether the affected Xbox features work.
The removal command may report that the package is absent or may fail if policy blocks the change; the Store URI also depends on Microsoft Store functioning. Do not remove unrelated Xbox packages or improvise extra commands. If Xbox/Game Pass did not fail alongside Game Bar, skip this step.

Microsoft published the following workaround for the related Windows 10 Gaming Services errors 0x80073D26 and 0x8007139F, not specifically for 0x803F8001. It removes Gaming Services package data and two service registry entries. Use it only when ordinary app and Store repairs have failed and Gaming Services itself appears to be involved. Create a restore point or system backup first. This requires administrator rights and changes registry service entries, so do not run it casually on a work or school-managed PC. Stop if PowerShell reports access, execution-policy, or registry errors rather than trying additional deletion commands.
- Open Notepad and paste this script:
Get-AppxPackage *gamingservices* -allusers | remove-appxpackage -allusers
Remove-Item -Path "HKLM:SystemCurrentControlSetServicesGamingServices" -Recurse
Remove-Item -Path "HKLM:SystemCurrentControlSetServicesGamingServicesNet" -Recurse
- Save it as
RepairGamingServices.ps1. Set Save as type to All Files (*.*) so Notepad does not append a text-file extension. - Right-click the saved script and choose Run as administrator.
- Restart Windows, open the Xbox app, and install Gaming Services if the app prompts you.
The Microsoft article concerns a historical Gaming Services issue and identifies the June 11, 2021 KB5004476 update as its resolution. That history does not establish KB5004476 as a fix for Game Bar error 0x803F8001.
9. Run the Store Apps troubleshooter if it is available
On Windows 10 builds that still include it, open Start → Settings → Update & Security → Troubleshoot → Additional troubleshooters → Windows Store Apps → Run the troubleshooter. Follow any suggested repair, restart, and test Store and Game Bar. The troubleshooter may not be present on every Windows 10 installation; Microsoft includes it among the options in its Store app troubleshooting steps.

10. Check Windows system files if Store and app repairs still fail
If several Windows or Store apps are malfunctioning, system-file repair is a broader escalation—not a confirmed direct repair for Game Bar entitlement or Store licensing. Open Command Prompt as an administrator and run these commands one at a time, waiting for each to finish:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows after both complete. If the Store remains broken or the error persists across apps, avoid repeating package removals; the remaining issue may involve the Windows profile, policy, or wider Store/AppX registration.
If the error remains
- Try the intended Microsoft account in another Windows user profile, if practical. If the issue is limited to one profile, that points toward profile-specific app registration or settings.
- On a managed work or school PC, ask the administrator whether Microsoft Store or Xbox services are restricted.
- For a child or family-managed account, check the applicable family restrictions and app availability settings.
- If the Store cannot install any apps, focus on Store repair or contact Microsoft Support. If only Game Bar fails after the Store and account checks, contact Xbox Support with the exact message and code.
- Consider a Windows repair installation only after app-level repairs are exhausted; it is a larger recovery step and can affect installed applications or settings depending on the method.
After a successful repair, Win + G should open the overlay. If Xbox or Game Pass was also affected, check those separately rather than assuming that Game Bar opening proves every Xbox component is repaired.
