How to request a Steam game refund
- Open Steam Support and sign in to the account that made the purchase.
- Select Purchases.
- Choose the game or transaction. If needed, use the purchase refund support page.
- Select the issue that best describes the problem.
- Choose I’d like to request a refund.
- Select Steam Wallet or the original payment method if Steam offers it for that transaction.
- Submit the request and keep the confirmation email.
Use the purchase history to identify the transaction; submit the request through Steam Support. If the purchase does not appear in the list, check that you are signed into the right account and use Steam’s purchase-help flow rather than assuming the transaction is ineligible.
Steam’s standard refund rule: 14 days and under two hours
For games and software, Steam’s standard policy is that the request is made within 14 days of purchase and the title has been played for less than two hours. Exactly two hours is not under the limit. Steam counts online and offline play, as well as playtime through Steam Family or shared-library access. Do not assume uninstalling a game or turning off a feature resets its recorded playtime. The policy page’s displayed last-updated label is April 23, 2024; it was available on August 18, 2026. Steam’s policy and support options can change, so check the current Steam refund policy for your purchase.

If you are outside the standard limits
You can still submit a request if you have played for two hours or more, or if more than 14 days have passed. Steam may review it, but approval is discretionary and not promised. Explain the issue clearly, especially if the game is technically broken. In some jurisdictions, consumers may have additional rights for faulty products; those rights depend on where you live and are not identical worldwide.
Exceptions and rules for other Steam purchases
DLC
Steam-purchased downloadable content is generally refundable within 14 days if you have played the underlying game for less than two hours since buying the DLC and the DLC has not been consumed, modified, or transferred. Some DLC that permanently changes a game or account, or that is marked nonrefundable due to a third-party exception, may not qualify.

In-game purchases
For games developed by Valve, an in-game purchase may be refundable within 48 hours if the item has not been consumed, modified, or transferred. Developers of other games can opt into similar refunds, and Steam indicates eligibility at purchase. Otherwise, Steam does not refund in-game purchases in non-Valve games.
Preorders and Early Access
You can generally request a refund for a preorder before the game releases. After release, the standard 14-day period generally starts on the release date, and the under-two-hours rule applies. Playtime in Early Access or Advanced Access before release can count toward the limit. For a preorder bought more than six months before release, Steam says a refund may not be available to the original payment method, though Steam Wallet credit may be available in some cases. See Steam’s preorder refund guidance.

Gifts
An unredeemed gift can generally be refunded under the standard 14-day and under-two-hours rules. If the recipient has redeemed it, the recipient must initiate or approve the refund process. The refund goes to the original purchaser, not necessarily the recipient.
Bundles
A bundle can generally receive a full refund if none of its items have been transferred, combined use of its items is under two hours, and it contains no nonrefundable component that blocks the refund. Steam identifies relevant refundability exceptions during checkout.

Steam Wallet funds
Wallet funds bought through Steam may be refundable within 14 days if none of the funds have been used. This is separate from choosing Steam Wallet as the destination for an approved game refund.
Subscriptions
For a renewable subscription, Steam says you may request a refund within 48 hours of the initial purchase or automatic renewal if the current billing cycle has not been used. Playing included games or using subscription benefits counts as use. Canceling stops automatic renewal but normally leaves access active through the current billing cycle.

VAC bans and video content
A VAC ban on a game removes the right to refund that game. Video content—including movies, shorts, series, episodes, and tutorials—is generally not refundable unless it is part of a qualifying bundle with other refundable content.
Purchases made outside Steam
Valve says it cannot refund purchases made outside Steam. If you bought a CD key, Steam Wallet card, or game from a third-party seller, contact that seller. Use only official Steam pages for Steam support; do not enter your account credentials on unofficial refund sites.

After approval, a refund can take up to seven days to appear. Approved Steam Wallet credit can arrive in 24–48 hours; international payment methods may take longer. Check both your Steam Wallet and the relevant bank or payment-account statement.
If a transaction is canceled soon after purchase, your bank may remove an authorization hold instead of showing a separate incoming refund. Steam says bank confirmation of a canceled transaction can sometimes take up to 30 days. If an approved refund has not appeared after seven days, contact your bank or payment provider; for questions about the request itself, return to Steam Support.
What to do if the purchase or refund is missing
- Confirm that you are signed into the Steam account that made the purchase.
- Search your email for a Steam receipt and compare its details with the transaction history.
- Check whether it was a gift, a purchase on another account, or a transaction through a third-party seller.
- For an unrecognized charge, use the Steam purchase-help flow and choose the unauthorized-charge option. Secure your Steam and email accounts, and contact your payment provider if necessary.
- If an expected purchase is still missing, use Steam Support’s Purchases flow or the purchase-help page. A receipt helps identify a transaction but does not by itself establish refund eligibility.
- If Steam approved the refund, check both the Wallet and payment account; contact your bank if the funds have not appeared after seven days.
Steam says refunded games retain their playtime and achievements on your Community Profile; a refund does not erase those records.
