Who Sir Ansbach is
Ansbach is an aging warrior whose past is tied directly to Mohg. When you first speak with him, he identifies himself as having formerly served Lord Mohg, but his current purpose is investigation: he wants to understand what Miquella ultimately intends rather than accept another lord’s claims without question.
“I am Ansbach. Formerly in service to Lord Mohg.”

“Which is why I have chosen to dedicate myself to investigation. To discern Tender Miquella’s ultimate purpose.”
Those lines are commonly reproduced from community dialogue transcripts; subtitle punctuation or surrounding context can vary by language and version. His motivation is nevertheless clear in the encounter: Ansbach is following evidence about Miquella and the crosses scattered through the Realm of Shadow.
Where to find Sir Ansbach
| Area | What Ansbach is doing there |
|---|---|
| Main Gate Cross, Gravesite Plain | First meeting. He asks you to report other crosses associated with Miquella. |
| Specimen Storehouse, Shadow Keep | His investigation becomes entangled with the Secret Rite Scroll, Freyja’s situation, and Leda’s next move. |
| Enir-Ilim | A later appearance connected to the branch you choose in the Storehouse portion of the quest; he may be available to assist in a late encounter. |
The route is best understood as one connected NPC story rather than three unrelated sightings. The broad locations are consistent, but the precise trigger order can depend on how far you have advanced nearby NPC and area events.
Sir Ansbach’s quest route
1. Speak with him at the Main Gate Cross
Find Ansbach beside the Main Gate Cross in Gravesite Plain and exhaust his dialogue. He asks you to keep him informed about other Miquella crosses. Treat that request as an invitation to share discoveries, not proof that every optional cross must be found before his quest can continue; no fixed cross-count requirement is established here.

Ansbach later relocates to the Shadow Keep’s Specimen Storehouse. Speak with him again and exhaust the available conversation. This is the section where his research, Redmane Freyja’s concerns, and Needle Knight Leda’s actions begin to overlap.
3. Handle the Secret Rite Scroll conversation
The Secret Rite Scroll is the key object in the Storehouse stage. When the game permits you to discuss or present it to Ansbach, pay close attention to every resulting conversation and to Freyja’s related dialogue. The scroll is not a detached collectible: it is the information that links Ansbach’s investigation to Freyja’s personal situation and to Leda’s pursuit.
4. Resolve the Ansbach–Leda decision
Leda’s progression creates the major branch. You will eventually be asked, in effect, whether to support Ansbach or assist Leda. Supporting Ansbach keeps his side of the conflict active; assisting Leda advances the opposing path. Because the exact signs and timing are sensitive to surrounding quest progress, read the names on the available interaction signs and finish nearby NPC dialogue before committing.
5. Check for Ansbach in Enir-Ilim
After the Storehouse events and the resulting branch, continue to Enir-Ilim and look for Ansbach’s later appearance. Broad quest summaries indicate that supporting him can lead to later assistance and a final encounter there. Whether his summon is available, and which rewards remain obtainable, depends on the sequence of the Freyja and Leda events.
How Freyja and Leda change the quest
Ansbach’s thread is deliberately interlinked with two other NPC stories:
- Redmane Freyja: Her situation is tied to the information revealed by the Secret Rite Scroll. Her related dialogue should be treated as part of Ansbach’s Storehouse progression, not as a separate optional errand.
- Needle Knight Leda: Leda’s investigation produces the consequential choice between backing Ansbach and helping her. That choice controls which side of the later conflict you experience.
For that reason, do not rush past Storehouse conversations after acquiring the scroll. The broad route is known, but exact fail states and the order in which individual signs appear are not safely summarized by a single universal checklist.
What the choice can change
| Decision area | Established effect | What requires in-game confirmation |
|---|---|---|
| Side with Ansbach or assist Leda | Determines which NPC branch continues from the Storehouse conflict. | The exact encounter sequence and sign timing for your current save. |
| Freyja’s related steps | Connects the Secret Rite Scroll to her part of the story. | Whether every related conversation was completed before the next major event. |
| Late-game assistance | Ansbach can be present in Enir-Ilim on the supportive branch. | Exact summon eligibility and the complete item-reward list. |
Because the available summaries do not establish every reward and fail-state condition, a responsible guide should not promise a universal item list from the broad route alone. If a particular summon or reward matters to you, finish Ansbach’s, Freyja’s, and Leda’s current dialogue before advancing the next major area event and confirm the resulting sign in your own game.
Why Ansbach matters to the expansion’s story
Ansbach provides a perspective that few other characters can: he once served Mohg, yet now examines Miquella’s project from outside its inner circle. His investigation links the legacy of Mohg to the expansion’s central mystery and gives the player a reason to treat Miquella’s crosses, the Secret Rite Scroll, Freyja’s doubts, and Leda’s loyalty as parts of one unfolding question.
