How to Fix SteamVR Error 109

SteamVR Error 109 can point to GPU access, display, USB, or headset startup problems. Follow these checks in order to isolate the cause.

Start by checking the exact message shown with Error 109. Valve’s Vive-focused support flow labels Error 109/Error 400 “Unable to Access GPU” and recommends checking the monitor and headset’s GPU connections. The same number can also appear during headset startup or display initialization in other configurations, so it does not identify one cause by itself. Note your headset model, connection type, whether SteamVR or Windows detects it, and whether its display is black or shows an error. Valve’s Error 109 guidance is specifically about its Vive-related GPU-access path.

Try the quickest, lowest-risk checks first

  1. Quit SteamVR, then quit the Steam client.
  2. Check that the headset’s video, USB, and power connections are firmly seated. If you have a Vive Link Box, check both its PC-side connections and its headset-side cables.
  3. On a desktop, connect the monitor and headset video cable to outputs on the same discrete graphics card. Avoid using a motherboard video output for one while the other is connected to the graphics card.
  4. Try another video port on that graphics card. If the headset supports another connection type, test it with a known-compatible cable or adapter.
  5. Power-cycle the headset or Link Box, then restart the PC and launch SteamVR.

For a Vive Link Box, Valve’s procedure is to unplug its power and USB cables on the PC side, wait several seconds, reconnect them, wait for any driver installation to finish, and reopen SteamVR. Do not interrupt a firmware update in progress. Valve’s headset-detection steps and firmware guidance describe these precautions.

Check the video connection and GPU path

If the error mentions GPU access, or SteamVR sees the headset but its display stays black, start here. USB detection and video output are separate: a headset may appear in Windows or SteamVR while its display connection still fails.

Desktop PCs

  • Connect the monitor and headset video cable to the same physical graphics card. A motherboard HDMI or DisplayPort socket may use integrated graphics even when a discrete GPU is installed.
  • Test another port on that card, preferably a direct connection rather than a dock or unusual adapter. Valve recommends trying a different port, cable, or supported DisplayPort/HDMI arrangement for the Vive GPU-access issue.
  • Swap one component at a time. A cable can carry power or USB data while its video conductors are faulty; a working monitor on a port does not prove every headset cable or adapter is sound.

Use cables and adapters approved for your headset and capable of its required display mode. An adapter adds another possible failure point, so remove it during diagnosis when a direct connection is possible.

Laptops, USB-C, and docks

Video outputs on laptops can be routed through integrated graphics or a discrete GPU, depending on the model and firmware. A USB-C socket may not support DisplayPort Alt Mode or the GPU path the headset needs, and a dock that works with a regular monitor may still fail with VR. Connect directly to a supported laptop port if possible; use the laptop maker’s graphics controls to assign SteamVR to the high-performance GPU, but treat that as a configuration-dependent test, not a guaranteed repair.

Direct Mode on older Vive-style setups

For older display-path problems, open SteamVR > Settings > Developer and enable Direct Mode if that option is available. In Direct Mode, the headset is not treated like an ordinary desktop monitor. Valve notes that if the headset shows the desktop after SteamVR closes, Direct Mode is not enabled; update the GPU driver if you cannot enable it. This setting is not exposed or required in every modern headset configuration. Valve’s display and Direct Mode troubleshooting covers this path.

Reboot a Vive headset or Link Box

Restart the headset in SteamVR

For a supported Vive setup, start SteamVR, right-click the headset icon, and select Reboot Vive Headset. Wait for the reboot to finish before testing again. The command may not appear for other headset models. Valve lists this as a Vive troubleshooting step.

Power-cycle the Link Box

  1. Quit SteamVR.
  2. Disconnect the Link Box’s power and USB cables from the PC side—not the headset/orange side.
  3. Wait several seconds, then reconnect both cables.
  4. If Windows installs drivers, wait for that to finish before launching SteamVR.

Do not unplug components while a firmware update is pending; let the update complete first. Valve’s Link Box instructions specify the PC-side power and USB reset.

Reset SteamVR’s USB device registrations

Try this if the headset appears inconsistently, or the problem started after changing USB ports, hardware, or drivers. Keep the Link Box USB cable unplugged during removal.

  1. Unplug all Link Box cables from the PC.
  2. Open SteamVR and go to SteamVR > Settings > Developer. Enable Developer Settings if needed.
  3. Select Remove all SteamVR USB Devices and confirm.
  4. Quit SteamVR, then reconnect USB, video, and power.
  5. Launch SteamVR and allow it to detect the devices again.

SteamVR releases and headset types can use different menu wording; look under Developer settings for the USB-device removal or reset command. Valve’s USB reset instructions describe the unplug-before-removal requirement.

Test USB ports and controllers

If the headset is missing from SteamVR or detection changes when you reconnect it, isolate USB after checking the video path.

  • Connect directly to a rear motherboard USB port rather than a front-panel port, passive hub, or dock.
  • Try a known-working port. Where the headset supports it, test both USB 2.0 and USB 3.x; neither is universally better, and USB 2.0 may not meet every headset’s requirements.
  • Disconnect unused USB devices temporarily to reduce variables.
  • If every ordinary port fails but the headset works on another PC, the motherboard USB controller may be incompatible or faulty. A USB PCIe card can be a workaround in that case, but it is not a guaranteed fix. Valve mentions testing an Inateck 2-Port USB 3.0 PCIe card with HTC Vive; that does not establish compatibility with every motherboard or headset. Valve’s USB troubleshooting recommends trying different ports and considering controller compatibility.

Update or roll back the GPU driver

Install the driver offered for your GPU by NVIDIA or AMD, then restart Windows. If Error 109 began immediately after a driver update, test the previous stable driver or use the GPU vendor’s clean-install option. Avoid third-party driver-download sites. A full driver-cleanup utility is an advanced last resort, not Valve’s first-line Error 109 fix; it can remove more than the intended display driver. Valve’s headset detection guidance recommends current GPU drivers for relevant display and Direct Mode issues.

Verify SteamVR, then check software conflicts

Verify SteamVR files

  1. In Steam, open Library > Tools.
  2. Right-click SteamVR and choose Properties.
  3. Open the local-files section and select Verify Integrity of Tool Cache.

If verification reports a problem, follow Steam’s repair or reinstall prompts. Reinstalling is a later software check: it cannot fix incorrect GPU wiring, a damaged cable, a failed USB controller, or a defective headset. Valve also lists reinstalling local tool content as a subsequent step in its SteamVR troubleshooting flow.

Temporarily remove likely conflicts

Disable overclocks and GPU tuning for a test, and turn off overlays or third-party VR drivers you do not need. SteamVR’s add-on settings can be used to disable unneeded OpenVR/OpenXR drivers; Valve documents its driver loading and add-on system in the OpenVR Driver API documentation.

Valve’s troubleshooting list includes historical conflict candidates such as Razer Synapse, ASUS AI Suite, Avast, JDS Labs ODAC USB audio devices, older Apple Cinema Displays with attached USB devices, and TP-LINK TL-WN881ND wireless adapters. These are candidates to isolate, not proof that any one item causes Error 109 on a current PC. Disconnect or disable one at a time and retest; do not leave antivirus or Windows security disabled as a routine fix. Valve’s conflict troubleshooting page lists these classes of software and hardware.

Use the symptom to choose the next test

What you see Prioritize What the result suggests
Headset is not visible in SteamVR USB port, Link Box power cycle, SteamVR USB reset, then cable and headset cross-tests Failure across multiple PCs and ports points more toward headset, cable, or Link Box hardware than a SteamVR installation.
Headset appears, but its display is black or reports GPU access Same-GPU routing, direct video connection, alternate port/cable, then Direct Mode if available USB detection alone does not confirm a working display path.
Problem began after moving the PC or changing monitors Check whether monitor and headset ended up on different GPUs; remove a new dock or adapter A changed physical route can prevent SteamVR from reaching the intended GPU.
Problem began after a SteamVR, Windows, or GPU-driver update Restart components, test a GPU-driver rollback, disable third-party drivers, verify SteamVR files A recent software change is a useful clue, but does not rule out a cable or port fault.

If the issue started after switching Steam or SteamVR branches, testing the stable branch can be a useful community-suggested diagnostic, but it is not a universal Valve requirement. A Steam Community discussion describes that approach anecdotally.

Know when to suspect hardware

Do not conclude that the GPU or headset is dead from Error 109 alone. Cross-test components to see whether the fault follows one part:

  • Try a known-good compatible cable and another port on the same GPU.
  • Test the headset on another compatible PC.
  • Try another headset on the same PC, if available.
  • Note whether moving the cable changes the symptom, or whether the headset is never detected in either Windows or SteamVR.

If the error follows the headset to a second PC with known-good connections, contact the headset manufacturer. If another headset also fails on this PC, investigate its GPU, ports, USB controller, or software. An abnormal Link Box power/status condition is another reason to seek model-specific support rather than buying parts at random.

Prepare a SteamVR report for support

If the checks above do not resolve the error, save a report before contacting Steam or the headset maker. In SteamVR, open Settings > General > Create System Report, then save the file. Valve documents the System Report tool as a support diagnostic.

Include the exact Error 109 text or a screenshot, headset model, GPU model, Windows version, SteamVR version/build, connection type, when the failure began, and which cable, port, or second-PC tests you performed. Share serial information only when the manufacturer’s support process requests it.
