Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition is already available on Android; it is not still an upcoming release. Rockstar announced the mobile version on October 8, 2021, initially targeting the first half of 2022. The Android release arrived later, on December 14, 2023, through Netflix alongside iOS. Availability, device compatibility, and access terms can vary by country and current store listing.
What is the GTA remastered collection?
Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition bundles updated versions of three earlier games: Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. It is a remastered collection, not a new sequel or a remaster of GTA IV, GTA V, or the entire series. Rockstar’s official trilogy page describes the collection and marks it as available.
Rockstar said Grove Street Games adapted the collection using Unreal Engine. Its announced improvements include higher-resolution textures, updated character and vehicle models, enhanced lighting, shadows, weather and reflections, added environmental detail, and increased draw distances. Rockstar also advertised modernized targeting and weapon controls, navigation improvements, and control conventions inspired by GTA V. These are the collection’s advertised changes; they do not guarantee identical performance or presentation across mobile, console, and PC builds. See Rockstar’s announcement of the Definitive Edition for its feature description.
When did it come to Android?
| Milestone | Date or timing |
|---|---|
| Rockstar announces mobile versions | October 8, 2021 |
| Original iOS and Android target window | First half of 2022 |
| Mobile release on Netflix, iOS, and Android | December 14, 2023 |
The first-half-2022 window was the original plan, not the actual release date. Rockstar’s October 2021 announcement set that target; its December 14, 2023 release notice confirms the later availability on Netflix, iOS, and Android. Older pages saying the games are “coming next year” are repeating the superseded schedule.

How can you play it on an Android phone?
Check Netflix Games
Netflix was the explicitly documented mobile distribution route at launch. Open Netflix on your Android device and search for each game or the collection; the app should show whether a title is available for your account and device and guide you to install it. Netflix access is not a permanent standalone purchase: it depends on an eligible paid account, supported territory, and current catalog and plan rules. The available official coverage does not establish August 2026 plan pricing or whether every plan and market includes the games, so check the current Netflix app and Netflix signup information for your location.
Check Google Play separately
If you do not use Netflix, search Google Play for the exact “Definitive Edition” title and verify the publisher and edition before installing. Listings, prices, and eligibility can vary by region and change over time. Older standalone mobile ports may appear in search results beside the remasters, and the current sources do not establish a universally available standalone Definitive Edition purchase or price. Start at the official Google Play storefront; do not assume a console or PC purchase includes Android access.

Confirm compatibility and practical requirements
Before downloading, use the official listing in your region as the primary compatibility check. Requirements may differ by title, distribution route, device, and software build. Rockstar’s support material includes mobile update notes for San Andreas – The Definitive Edition dated November 12, 2025, showing that the mobile version has received post-launch maintenance; consult the current Rockstar support page for applicable notes and troubleshooting.
- Check the listed Android version and whether the store marks your specific phone compatible.
- Reserve enough free storage for the app and any additional game data; check each listing for its current download size rather than assuming the three games occupy one small app’s space.
- Confirm controller support and installation or offline-play requirements in the listing or support information. Do not assume console features, saves, or account behavior carry over to mobile.
- If a title is unavailable or marked incompatible, do not bypass the restriction with an APK from a third-party site. Unofficial packages can be modified or malicious.
How is the Definitive Edition different from older Android ports?
Rockstar released mobile versions of the original games before the trilogy remasters. For example, its 2014 announcement for the original mobile San Andreas describes that earlier port. Finding a game with the same name on Android does not by itself mean you have found the Definitive Edition.

Is the Android trilogy worth choosing?
The mobile collection is a practical option if you want these three stories on a phone and your device is supported. It may be especially convenient if you already use Netflix and the games are included for your account and region. If you do not want subscription-dependent access, first verify whether an official standalone Definitive Edition listing is actually available where you live. Choose based on your preference for mobile convenience, the remaster’s presentation and controls, and the access model—not on the assumption that every phone will run it well or that “Definitive” means technically flawless.
Rockstar acknowledged technical problems with the collection’s launch versions and said they did not meet the company’s quality standards in a statement about the launch. The mobile release has had subsequent support updates, but that history is not a guarantee that every issue is fixed on every device.
Quick Recap
Best Value
What to do if installation or play does not work
- The game does not appear: Check the Netflix catalog or official store listing for your country and account. Availability can be regional; avoid unofficial APK downloads.
- The store says your device is incompatible: Treat that result as the best available device-specific check. Do not assume a newer Android phone is supported simply because it is recent.
- There is not enough storage or the download stalls: Check the listing’s current size, free additional space, and network connection, then retry through the official app.
- Your controller is not detected or performance is poor: Consult the listing and Rockstar support notes for the exact mobile build. Controller behavior and performance can vary; console instructions may not apply.
- Access or progress is missing: Verify the Netflix account and profile used, or the account and save location specified by the relevant official app. The available sources do not establish cross-platform save compatibility.
