LG’s August 20, 2025 Gaming Portal update makes supported LG TVs a more convenient front door to cloud and webOS games. It adds a redesigned interface, a Play with Gamepad section, more free games, recommendations and accessory shortcuts, plus LG’s claimed support for up to 4K/120Hz HDR streaming through the native GeForce NOW app on compatible combinations.
The important limitation is that Gaming Portal is not a single LG game subscription. It is an aggregation and discovery layer. You still need the relevant provider account, subscription, controller, compatible screen and adequate internet connection for many games.
What LG announced on August 20, 2025
LG described the update as a broad redesign of Gaming Portal rather than the launch of a new standalone cloud service. The rollout began across regions from August 2025, with availability reported in more than 30 countries. LG’s announcement highlighted these changes:
- A redesigned interface for finding AAA, casual, family and social games.
- A Play with Gamepad menu linking supported cloud-gaming services.
- More free single-player and multiplayer games through Play.Works.
- Recently played games, popular titles, editor’s picks and personalized recommendations.
- Gaming-accessory shortcuts and market-specific promotions.
- A High Score Challenge feature for selected arcade-style games.
- Up to 4K/120Hz HDR cloud gaming through the native GeForce NOW app on supported LG TVs.
LG said the portal contained more than 4,000 cloud-based games and 600 free games when the announcement was made. Its later U.S. consumer page promotes more than 4,000 cloud titles and 900-plus free games. Those are different dated promotional figures, not a promise that every title is available in every country or under one subscription. See LG’s announcement at LG.com and its current U.S. Gaming Portal page.

Gaming Portal is an aggregator, not an all-you-can-play service
Gaming Portal brings cloud services, native webOS games and free casual titles into one interface. It does not replace the services behind them. Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, GeForce NOW, Amazon Luna, Blacknut and Boosteroid retain their own accounts, catalogs, plans, regional restrictions and technical requirements.
That distinction matters when LG advertises thousands of games. The total combines multiple providers and game types; it is not a single LG-owned library. A game shown in the portal may require a separate login, a paid membership, a compatible controller or a particular provider’s app.
LG previously described the portal’s categories as including cloud apps, remote-playable webOS games, recently played titles, trending games, editor’s picks and personalized options. The redesign makes those categories easier to browse, but the underlying services remain separate. Details are in LG’s launch announcement at LG.com.
Which services and games are included?
| Service or source | What it contributes | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox Game Pass Ultimate | Cloud access to the Xbox catalog through the Xbox app | Game Pass Ultimate, a supported region, compatible TV software and usually a controller |
| NVIDIA GeForce NOW | Cloud streaming of supported PC games, including LG’s high-performance streaming claim | Membership tier, owned or supported game licenses, TV model, server distance and network quality |
| Amazon Luna | Cloud games surfaced through Gaming Portal | Country, account and Luna channel or membership requirements |
| Blacknut | Cloud games, including casual and family-oriented selections | Subscription, country and controller or remote compatibility for each title |
| Boosteroid | Another cloud-gaming option listed by LG | Regional availability, supported games and proximity to Boosteroid servers |
| Play.Works and native webOS games | Free, casual, arcade, party and remote-friendly titles | Country, current catalog and whether a Magic Remote, phone or gamepad is required |
LG has highlighted examples such as Wheel of Fortune, Tetris and PAC-MAN through Play.Works. Blacknut has also promoted controller-light games including The Jackbox Party Starter. Catalogs change, and a named title is not necessarily available in every market.

Remote and phone-controlled games
Not everything in the portal assumes a traditional gamepad. Supported titles can use an LG Magic Remote or LG Mobile Gamepad app, which is useful for party and casual games. More demanding cloud and AAA games generally still need a compatible Bluetooth or USB controller.
What LG’s 4K/120Hz HDR claim actually means
LG says supported TVs can reach up to 4K/120Hz with HDR when cloud gaming through the native GeForce NOW app. This is a maximum supported streaming mode, not a guaranteed result for every game or user.
- The TV must support the relevant resolution, refresh rate and HDR format.
- The GeForce NOW app, membership tier and game must support the mode.
- Server location, bandwidth, latency, Wi-Fi conditions and congestion affect the result.
- A 120Hz panel does not mean the cloud stream will arrive at 120 frames per second.
For cloud play, stable latency and a clean connection can matter more than the panel’s headline specification. Wired Ethernet or a strong modern 5GHz/6GHz Wi-Fi connection is preferable where practical.

General Gaming Portal rollout
LG’s February 2025 U.S. launch announcement said Gaming Portal initially supported LG Smart TVs running webOS 23 or newer in 19 markets, with expansion planned for additional countries, LG Smart Monitors and StanbyME lifestyle screens. Read the original rollout details at LG.com.
Xbox app requirements
LG’s Xbox releases tie the Xbox app to supported TVs and select smart monitors running webOS 24 or newer, including certain 2022-and-later models after the necessary update. The U.S. release cited software version 23.20.01 or higher for listed compatible devices. The global announcement is at LG.com.
Because model eligibility, country rollout and software versions differ, open the TV’s software-update screen and verify the exact model on LG’s local support pages. Do not assume that every webOS TV supports every service or portal feature.
What you need to play
- A supported LG Smart TV, monitor or lifestyle screen with current software.
- Gaming Portal or the individual cloud app available in your country.
- A broadband connection with sufficiently low latency; Ethernet is often the most consistent option.
- An account for the provider you choose, plus a paid plan where that service requires one.
- A compatible Bluetooth or USB controller for most controller-based games.
- An LG Magic Remote or smartphone for titles that explicitly support remote or mobile controls.
- An HDR-capable TV and an eligible game and service for HDR output.
For the Xbox cloud experience, LG specifically requires Game Pass Ultimate and a compatible controller. Its January 2025 partnership announcement is available at LG.com, while the Xbox availability details are at LG.com.

Is a console still necessary?
No console is required for supported cloud games. Gaming Portal is therefore attractive to owners who want occasional living-room gaming without buying a PlayStation, Xbox or gaming PC.
It does not remove the trade-offs of cloud gaming:
- Subscriptions remain: access is usually tied to one or more provider memberships.
- Controllers may still be essential: remote play is mainly suited to casual and party titles.
- Internet quality determines the experience: unstable connections produce lag, blur or disconnects.
- Local consoles remain more predictable: they support offline play, physical media or permanent downloads, broader compatibility and generally lower input latency.
- Catalogs can change: cloud games rotate and differ by country.
The portal is best understood as a convenient front door, not a replacement for every capability of a console.
Troubleshooting common problems
The portal or an app is missing
Confirm the TV is online, install the latest webOS update and check the exact model and country eligibility. Xbox availability has stricter webOS and model requirements than the general portal rollout.
A game launches but will not start
Check whether the provider requires a separate account, paid tier or controller. A title displayed by LG may belong to a service you have not subscribed to, or may not be licensed in your region.

4K/120Hz is unavailable
Verify the TV, GeForce NOW app, membership tier, game, HDR settings and network. The feature is a supported ceiling, not an automatic setting on every combination.
The controller is not recognized
Confirm Bluetooth or USB compatibility, pair the controller in the TV settings and check whether the individual cloud service supports that model and input mode.
Input lag or image quality is poor
Reduce other network traffic, use Ethernet or a strong 5GHz/6GHz connection, and select a closer provider server when the service allows it. A high-refresh-rate TV cannot compensate for distant servers or unstable broadband.
Who should use LG Gaming Portal?
- Owners of newer LG OLED, QNED, NanoCell or UHD screens who want a unified gaming menu.
- Casual players and families interested in free, party or remote-controlled games.
- People already paying for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, GeForce NOW, Luna, Blacknut or Boosteroid.
- Console-free gamers who accept recurring service costs and internet dependence.
It is a weaker fit for competitive players demanding the lowest possible latency, households with unreliable broadband, owners of unsupported older TVs, or anyone expecting one LG payment to unlock every listed game.

The Bottom Line
LG’s 2025 redesign makes Gaming Portal a better discovery hub and a practical way to launch several cloud and webOS gaming options from a compatible screen. It does not turn those services into one universal subscription: check your model, country, webOS version, provider account, controller and network before treating the portal as a console alternative.
